Towards an Adjustment of the Teaching of Writing to Writers’ Skills
International audienceIn this chapter, we seek to examine the use of big corpora in the teaching practices of writing. We first begin by presenting the specificities of the Ecriscol (Écritures Scolaires) corpus. Ecriscol includes more than 2,000 texts, along with their drafts, written in French as a first language, and offers access to the different rewriting operations. We then conduct a study on the corpus to highlight some characteristics of school writing at the time of leaning. After sharing some findings on the use of connectors at different levels of schooling, we conclude by recommending that adjustments in teaching and pedagogy be made to suit students’ writing skills according to their grade level
International audienceObjectives1) To investigate if vocal variation produced by assigned-female-at-birth (AFAB) non-binary people differed from vocal variation produced by cisgender (cis) participants. Cue values produced by non-binary participants were predicted to differ from those values produced by cisgender participants. 2) To determine if previous subjective assessments of bright voice quality in AFAB non-binary participants were quantifiable, and if so, if non-binary and cisgender participants differed in their voice quality production.Study DesignA quantitative comparative research design.MethodsPhonetic and statistical analyses of continuous speech samples produced by AFAB non-binary and cisgender participants. Vocal cues were mean fundamental frequency (F0) and bright voice quality, measured by cepstral peak prominence-smoothed and spectral slope, with speaker gender as the predictor.ResultsAt the group level, non-binary participants produced intermediate F0 values — significantly lower than the cis women's and significantly higher than the cis men's. Individually, the majority of non-binary participants produced mean F0 in this intermediate range. Non-binary participants produced significantly less negative spectral slope and higher cepstral peak prominence-smoothed, indicative of a brighter, more resonant voice quality. Individual-level results indicated that vocal training and vocal tract physiology did not fully account for the results found.ConclusionParticipants’ agency, particularly their motivation to alter vocal output to avoid being misgendered, has an effect on the AFAB non-binary participants’ F0 production and potentially their voice quality. The majority of AFAB non-binary participants uniquely produced the cue combination of intermediate F0 and bright voice quality
The study focuses on the French construction Y parvenir (jusqu')à X used to refer to the perception of a sensory message Y (noise, smell...) by the X who perceives. The first part of the study is devoted to the linguistic analysis of this construction: the semantic properties of the verb parvenir are shown to favour the perceptual modalities of audition and olfaction(-taste). The second part of the study focuses on the image of Y's spatial trajectory, a much-exploited discourse resource (particularly in advertising): the image is shown not to be a metaphor. The last part of the study is devoted to uses where the construction refers to the trajectory (perceived as “figurative”) of a mental Y: the analysis of these uses in terms of metaphor is discussed and a unified approach to the construction is proposed.L’étude porte sur la construction Y parvenir (jusqu’)à X employée pour référer à la perception d’un message sensoriel Y (bruit, odeur…) par le X qui perçoit.
Energy Metaphors: Cognitive Analysis of the Representation of the EnergyCrisis in France
International audienceThis volume has been produced within the framework and with the support of the Project MED-GREEN. Examining Models of Local Livelihood, Green Building, and Sustainable Mobility in Mediterranean Areas through Discursive Negotiation and Active Citizenship. Philosophers and linguists have historically devoted considerable attention to establishing the centrality of metaphor within the broader scope of human thought. This sustained intellectual engagement has unequivocally confirmed, over the centuries, the paramount importance of this notion for the definition of the concepts, archetypes, and models that permeate daily existence. Metaphors function within everyday language not merely to satisfy a stylistic pretext or mitigate lexical inopia, but to translate a series of creative processes that inherently transcend the threshold of the strictly logical-inferential process. In this specific sense, the foundational step of this volume consists of formally acknowledging the inherent linguistic and cognitive dimensions of metaphor, compelling further reflection upon three dynamically interrelated elements: creativity, lexicalisation, and discourse
