Broadband polarized radio emission detected from Starlink satellites below 100 MHz with NenuFAR
No full textInternational audienceAims. We evaluate the impact of Starlink satellites on low-frequency radio astronomy below 100 MHz. We focus on challenges of the data processing and on scientific goals.Methods. We conducted 40 hours of imaging observations using NenuFAR in the 30.8–78.3 MHz range. Observations included both the targeted tracking of specific satellites based on orbital predictions and the untargeted searches focused on high-elevation regions of the sky. Images in total intensity and polarimetry were obtained, and full Stokes dynamic spectra were generated for several hundred directions within the field of view. The detected signals were cross-matched with satellite orbital data to confirm the satellite associations. We performed detailed analyses of the observed spectra, polarization, and temporal characteristics to investigate the origin and properties of the detected emissions.Results. We detected broadband emissions from Starlink satellites, predominantly between 54–66 MHz, with flux densities exceeding 500 Jy. These signals are highly polarized and unlikely to originate from ground-based radio frequency interference or reflected astronomical sources. Instead, they are likely intrinsic to the satellites, and distinct differences in the emission properties are observed for the different satellite generations. These findings highlight significant challenges to the data processing and scientific discoveries at these low frequencies and emphasize the need for effective mitigation strategies, in particular, through collaboration between astronomers and satellite operators
Julien Gracq et l’écriture critique : une littérature en acte
No full textThis thesis examines Gracq's originality in the field of literary criticism and literary history. It shows how Gracq's critical attitude forms the basis of a body of work and a lifestyle capable of answering three major questions : the insertion of novelistic writing within the critical work, the insertion of existential questions, and the function of critical writing at the interface between reading and action. In the first part, we show that Gracq's sensitive, self-confident reading is born of a contact with style, despite his opposition to a formal approach to texts. Gracq also offers his readers the experience of style through a critical writing that is aware of the stakes involved in its formulation. With degrees in geography and history, Gracq's attention to the materiality of the literary work, during the experience of reading, comes into tension with other preoccupations : space, history and the temporality of works. In this perspective, the second part focuses on the author's literary histories. However, since Gracq claims to be neither a poetician nor a literary historian, he only develops these activities with signs of reserve and relativization. We show, in the third part, that critical writing escapes this. It allows the author's ego to come into its own. The critical gesture enables him to assert an interpretation, some values - aesthetic as much as ethical - and to clarify the existential stakes involved in frequenting literature.La thèse porte sur l’originalité de Gracq dans le domaine de la critique et de l’histoire littéraires. Elle montre en quoi l’attitude critique fonde, chez lui, une œuvre et un mode de vie susceptibles de répondre à trois ordres d’interrogation majeurs : le devenir du romanesque au sein de l’œuvre critique, le devenir des interrogations existentielles, ainsi que la fonction de l’écriture critique, à l’interface entre la lecture et l’action. Dans une première partie, nous montrons que la lecture sensible et sûre d’elle-même pratiquée par Gracq naît, malgré son opposition à une approche formelle des textes, d’un contact avec le style. Gracq propose également l’expérience du style à son lecteur, à travers une écriture critique consciente des enjeux liés à sa formulation. Ayant reçu une formation de géographe et d’historien, il porte, dans le cadre du temps vécu de la lecture, une attention à la matérialité de l’œuvre qui entre en tension avec d’autres préoccupations : l’espace, l’Histoire et le temps des œuvres. Dans cette perspective, la deuxième partie porte sur les histoires littéraires proposées par l’auteur. Toutefois, Gracq ne prétendant être ni un poéticien ni un historien de la littérature, il ne développe ces activités qu’accompagnées de signes de réserve et de relativisation. Nous montrons, dans une troisième partie, que l’écriture critique y échappe. Elle permet au moi de l’auteur de s’accomplir dans toute sa justesse. Le geste critique lui accorde d’affirmer une interprétation, des valeurs – esthétiques autant qu’éthiques –, et de préciser les enjeux existentiels liés à la fréquentation de la littérature

No full textInternational audienceThe special issue examines the paradox of visible and hidden resistance in dangerous contexts, exploring the conditions under which dissenting practices emerge and the effects they generate. Latin America is marked by deep economic and political inequalities, perpetuated through repressive practices inherited from authoritarian regimes. Despite democratic transitions, these practices have not disappeared; rather, they have shifted into more localised forms of repression, targeting residents and activists who oppose urban renewal projects, the expansion of agricultural frontiers, large-scale energy exploitation, or activities deemed illegal. In this context -where violence, intimidation and abuse persist in both urban and rural areas, in workplaces and factories -it becomes essential to understand the conditions that enable resistance to take shape. While extreme coercion typically reduces the likelihood of contention, mobilisation has not only persisted but also evolved in response to repression, adapting to shifting political landscapes and new forms of criminalisation (Varela Huerta and McLean, 2019).Collective action is often organised within specific timeframes and led by established actors considered 'legitimate', such as NGOs, social organisations and unions with local roots, who engage with the state or corporations. However, beyond these structured mobilisations, resistance also unfolds through hidden practices among marginalised groups (Scott, 1990). While both visible and discreet forms of contention have been documented in resistance repertoires elsewhere (e.g., Caouette and Turner, 2009), little is known about how affected populations in Latin America experience and navigate repression in their daily lives. This issue seeks to fill that gap by highlighting pragmatic resistance practices and strategies shaped by a 'dealing with' approach. These actions operate along a continuum, from invisible tactics -often socially delegitimised due to their perceived archaic nature, such as rumours or accusations of witchcraft -to deliberate strategies of self-visibility aimed at protection against criminalisation.This nuanced perspective is grounded in qualitative research based on extensive fieldwork in national contexts where activist criminalisation is a pressing concern. The articles on this issue examine the distinct tactics ordinary people employ to navigate repression. In the first article, Léa Lebeaupin-Salamon explores how Brazilian mining trade unionists resisted corporate oppression. Confronted with an environment dominated by the extractive industry, activists combined visible and covert practices to sustain their fight against injustice. For those resisting intimidation, activism extends beyond the political arena, permeating both professional and personal lives.</div

No full textInternational audienceTeachers experience an emotional rollercoaster on a daily basis, dominated by joy and anger. While current research often focuses on the negative aspects of their emotions, moments of intense joy deserve special attention. This is particularly true of delight, which, according to Plutchik (1991), is a combination of the emotions of joy, admiration and surprise, and which is still underexplored in the scientific literature, especially in schools. This study aims to fill this gap by examining these moments of wonder in 91 language teachers, from nursery school to university level, who responded to an online questionnaire. It explores the factors that trigger these episodes in the classroom, for both teachers and students, based on teachers’ verbatims. The analysis also looks at the verbal and physical expression of this emotion and its impact on teaching and learning. The article concludes with recommendations for initial and in-service teacher training.Les enseignants vivent au quotidien des montagnes russes émotionnelles, dominées par la joie et la colère. Si la recherche actuelle se concentre souvent sur les aspects négatifs de leur ressenti, les moments de joie intense méritent une attention particulière. C'est notamment le cas de l'émerveillement, qui correspond, selon Plutchik (1991), à une combinaison des émotions joie, admiration et surprise, et qui est encore trop peu exploré dans la littérature scientifique, particulièrement dans le cadre scolaire. Cette étude vise à combler cette lacune en examinant ces instants d'émerveillement chez 91 enseignants de langues, de la maternelle à l'enseignement supérieur, ayant répondu à un questionnaire en ligne. Elle explore les facteurs déclencheurs de ces épisodes en classe, tant pour les professeurs que pour les élèves, en s'appuyant sur les verbatims des enseignants. L'analyse porte également sur l'expression verbale et corporelle de cette émotion, ainsi que sur ses effets sur l'enseignement et l'apprentissage. La patrimonialisation du cacao au Costa Rica et en République Dominicaine
No full textThis thesis analyzes the heritage-making process of cocoa in Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, exploring how this heritage evolves in response to contemporary challenges such as ecological transition, tourism, and inequality. By intertwining geography and agri-development, it reveals the tensions between the preservation of local knowledge, modernization, and the demands of global markets. The concept of “green monoculture” highlights the contradictions between sustainability and agricultural intensification. Based on data collected from 2011 to 2023, this research examines heritagization as a potential lever for sustainable development and territorial cohesion, offering an analysis that can be applied to other agri-food sectors.Esta tesis examina la patrimonialización del cacao en Costa Rica y la República Dominicana, analizando cómo este patrimonio se redefine frente a desafíos contemporáneos (transición ecológica, turismo y desigualdades). A través de un estudio comparativo, se describe cómo el cacao es movilizado, valorizado y transformado por diversos actores/as, productores/as, exportadores/as, instituciones públicas, ONG y organizaciones internacionales -según dinámicas territoriales específicas. Surge el concepto de “monocultivo verde”, que ilustra cómo, en Costa Rica, la sostenibilidad coexiste con prácticas intensivas que amenazan la biodiversidad, mientras que en la República Dominicana, un equilibrio entre ecología y patrimonio refuerza la imagen internacional de su cacao.Los resultados revelan que la patrimonialización del cacao no implica un simple retorno a las prácticas locales, sino una reinvención en la que se enfrentan la preservación de los conocimientos tradicionales y los imperativos de modernización.Esta dualidad es particularmente evidente en los procesos de certificación e internacionalización, donde las aspiraciones de calidad y autenticidad entran en tensión con las lógicas del mercado.Esta investigación interdisciplinaria combina geografía y agrodesarrollo, apoyándose en datos recopilados entre 2011 y 2023 en Costa Rica y la República Dominicana mediante entrevistas, observaciones de campo y análisis multiescalar. Explora la patrimonialización como un motor de desarrollo que combina calificación territorial, valorización económica y cohesión social, y ofrece una perspectiva crítica sobre las interacciones entre patrimonio, desarrollo y territorio, con implicaciones relevantes para otras cadenas agroalimentarias.Cette thèse analyse la patrimonialisation du cacao au Costa Rica et en République dominicaine, en explorant comment ce patrimoine évolue face aux défis contemporains : transition écologique, tourisme et inégalités. En croisant géographie et agrodéveloppement, elle révèle les tensions entre préservation des savoirs locaux, modernisation et exigences des marchés globaux.
