International audience: Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing are direct descendants of Machine Translation. In this article, we look at the history of NLP through its issues, its methods, its funding, its relationship with linguistics and other disciplines such as computer science and AI, its recurring weaknesses, and finally its evaluation methods. Five periods can be distinguished: 1949-1966: Early experiments in machine translation1966-1980: From syntactic analysis to artificial intelligence and language understanding1980-1990: From NLP to Natural Language Engineering1990-2010: Data turn, technological growth and widespread use of statistical and probabilistic methodsRecent developments in NLP: widespread adoption of Deep Learnin

Pashto preverbs, V. wə́- and the ‘perfective’ in Pashto

    No full text
International audienceThis article, the fifth on the subject of Pashto preverbs, deals with the perfective preverb wə́-. Pashto wə́- cannot be studied separately from aspectual oppositions: in fact, wə́- characterises the “perfective” of simple verbs. Therefore, a quick review of the aspect in Pashto follows. Before turning to the etymology of wə́-, the uses and semantics of Persian bi-, with which scholars universally associate Pashto wə́-, are presented. The conclusion of the analysis is that *wi is the best candidate as the origin of Pšt. wə́-, for several reasons that are presented in detail in the article:in this way, the path of adverbs can be traced, passing with a first grammaticalisation to preverbs and with a second grammaticalisation to support for the aspectual distinction. From an etymological point of view, prosodic features play the main role and must be considered first in any kind of analysis

    Le tournant forensique des SIC

    No full text
International audienceForensic analysis has made its way into the criminal science and the law field. It consists in examining tangible objects to find evidence or clues. Today, organizations are using this same method to analyze maps, data and images, to inform and report violence (by publishing videos online). A method that opens up new horizons for Media Studies researchers working in sensitive fields or public issues, and raises the question of their social involvement.L’analyse forensique a fait son chemin dans les sciences criminelles ou judiciaires.

: Rāma in epic, epigraphic and purāṇic sources: a role model of a king protecting grants?

    No full text
International audienceThe appeal to successors is a diplomatic clause in which the donor urges his successors to honour the gift he has made as if it were their own. In grants from South and Southeast Asia, this clause appeared in various forms, including a formulaic stanza in which the epic hero Rāma addresses future kings. Quoted in at least 80 inscriptions dating from the 8th to the 13th century and spanning different regions of South and Southeast Asia, this stanza lies at the heart of a Purāṇic narrative illustrating how Rāma protects the gifts of land made to the Brahmins through the centuries. Absent from Vālmīki's Rāmāyaṇa, this episode seems to indicate the transformation of the epic hero into an ideal donor and protector king. Similarly, Rāma's address to future kings is the final protective clause recommended by Devanabhaṭṭa in his 13th-century legal anthology, the Smṛticandrikā.Based on an inventory of sources that assign the function of gift protection to Rāma, this paper will seek to reconstruct how the epic hero became a model for ensuring the perpetuity of gifts of land.L’appel aux successeurs est une clause de la diplomatique par laquelle un donateur adjure ses successeurs de respecter le don qu’il a émis comme s’il s’agissait du leur.
