Typology meets statistical modeling: The German gender system
International audienceAbstract: The German gender system is known for its complexity, and there is a persistent misconception that it is largely arbitrary, and hence a challenge for the typology of gender systems. In response, we construct a database of more than 30,000 German nouns and show that a boosting tree model achieves a predictive success of 96%. Even more surprising, the model performs at 87% when trained on just the 100 most frequent nouns. We thus demonstrate that the complex German system fits into a typologically well-known scheme, being a combination of semantic and formal assignment principles. In addition to our success with the specific problem, we show the value of statistical modeling for typologists and reflect on what exactly we can learn from these techniques

International audienceThe present research aims at studying complex strategies of adjustments of topolines made up by successions of chalk-linings of the nobility from the Île-de-France region on same centers of seigneurial power, facing the so-called crisis of the 14th and 15th centuries. In other words, we study the mechanisms of social reproduction of this social group, composed of office holders and vassal of the king of France or “princes” of the royal court.A factoid-based prosopographic database is used to store the individuals, entities and relationships between them. This raises many questions about the recording and the processing of the relational data before they can be used for network analysis. These recordings require setting up an ontology of actors and social interactions following the indications of Michel Grossetti . This scholar has offered a choice of categories to classify people or individuals with multiple identities on the one hand, entities, or collectives on the other. He also referred to instrumental and coordination resources used as issues, constraints, or objectives in these interactions, as, in this context, economicand natural entities such as land and territorial kingships. A relational ontology then describes interpersonal conflicts, networks of power through feudalism, power over men and natural resources exploited such as land through the extension of domains by purchases, sales, exchanges or donations, the analysis of conflicts and balances between the power wielded by different local actors composing large kinships, noble factions and parties often lead by the princes, or religious institutions. This ontology then feeds a methodology for analysing kinship networks, networks of affiliations to royal or princely institutions, or belonging to clienteles or parties. How did the nobles arrange their kinship and customer alliances to help them sustain their state? How did these old noble benefit from the clients installation by the princes? How did they take part in the various parties which were opposed during the Hundred Year War? The contribution intends to highlight three types of network analysis.First, an example of analysis of local collections of egocentric networks of noble actors and witnesses of the cartulary of the Cistercian abbey of Chaalis would be based on the multiplex network between the nodes with the mapping of different types of de relations relation (relation of career, feudality, kinship relations, economic relations). The aim is to emphasize the rule of each type of relation in the centralities of the nodes of the network, especially in removing the node of the abbey entity to rely on the environment network. Then I present specific analysis of kinship networks thanks to the Puck software. The challenge for these patrilineages is to ensure the reproduction of aristocratic domination, in which 1 Based on my Phd thesis, different actors appear. It is therefore a question of approaching their matrimonial strategies and identifying their solidarities. Two complementary approaches are explained: the study of the network of alliances between patrilineages on the one hand, and a method of systematic exploration of the duplication and reconnection of alliances in affinity and consanguinity on the other. The evolution of network figures makes it possible to identify the expansions of matrimonial components, their halt over time and the individuals playing a key role in these alliance strategies. Finally, the biases and problems of this approach will be discussed throughout the presentation. And in the last I will focus on affiliation networks or bipartite networks as a mapping of the network of relationships between princely and royal hotels shows that many individuals have pursued careers in the hotel of Saint Louis or the army of Robert II d’Artois and the hostel of Charles d'Anjou, thus allowing relations between the administrative staff. During the noble rebellion of the years 1315, the noble rebellion led by Charles II de Navarre in the years 1355-1365, during the civil war between Armagnac and Bourguignon and the hundred years war against the Anglo-Burgundian alliance, the study of careers of the nobles from Ile de France region led me to realize network analysis of affiliation to princely and royal hotels and parties. In fact, we would want to identify the positions of structural equivalence of the nobles in the princely and royal structures, but with a tolerance. Therefore, communities of nobles with a social position connected in a similar shape to the rest of the network 6 would be identified, avoiding the phenomenon of artificial clustering
Négation et Modèles de Langue Pré-entraînés
The latest advances in Natural Language Processing (NLP) have introduced pre-trained language models (PLMs) that have proven to be extremely effective. However, these models, which rely on artificial neural networks, do not incorporate intermediate semantic units and therefore lack explicit compositionality. We question the ability of such models to interpret negation, highly compositional phenomenon. The aim of this thesis is to study the knowledge of negation acquired by PLMs, the form its encoding takes, and to propose methods to improve their handling of negation. We first verify that the models have an understanding of the scope of negation and that its encoding can be mobilized to capture phenomena that are direct consequences of the presence of negation.Next, we test the models' ability to account for negation through behavioral tests (token generation or prediction). While negation is not entirely ignored, its consideration is very limited in smaller models. However, additional analysis shows that large language models (LLMs) handle negation much better. We then relate the knowledge of negation in PLMs to their training corpora and demonstrate that the distribution of context polarities in which a verb appears influences its encoding and prediction by bidirectional models. We subsequently attempt to improve PLMs’ consideration of negation in their predictions, but our efforts to refine PLMs or directly intervene in embeddings prove unsuccessful. Finally, we train MLPs (multi-layer perceptrons) to simulate the encoding of polarity in a contextual embedding, allowing us to demonstrate the existence of a regularity in the encoding of PLMs that is compatible with the integration of a compositional operator.
