This thesis investigates the ways in which the acquisition and use of multiple languages shape the identity construction of children growing up in multilingual contexts, with particular attention to sociolinguistic environments such as Germany. Adopting a qualitative and inductive approach, the study explores the emotional, social, and cognitive dimensions of multilingualism through interviews, observations of familyinteractions, and children’s self-produced materials. The theoretical framework drawsupon key contributions from sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and languageeducation. Central concepts include the notion of the plurilingual repertoire (Grosjean,2010), identity dynamics in multilingual settings (Kramsch, 2009; Busch, 2012), andthe power relations between languages (Bourdieu, 1991; Heller, 2007). Multilingualismis conceptualized not as the sum of separate linguistic competences, but as an integrated, dynamic, socially mediated, and affectively charged capacity. From a methodological perspective, the research is grounded in qualitative data collected through semi-structured interviews with parents, ethnographic observations of everyday family life (including meals, games, and spontaneous interactions), and children’s visual representations of their relationship to languages. These data sets facilitate an in-depth analysis of how children construct their linguistic identities in relation to their emotional, educational, and social environments. The findings reveal the complexity and subtlety of language practices in multilingual contexts. Plurilingual children demonstrate sophisticated adaptive strategies, including code-switching, contextual and interlocutor-based language segmentation, and the symbolic negotiation of linguistic identities. While some visual productions suggest a harmonious coexistence of languages, others indicate the presence of explicit hierarchies or the emotional marginalization of languages perceived as less socially valued. The school environment, especially within bilingual educational structures, emerges as a decisive factor in either affirming or distancing children from their home languages. This study further highlights the tension between familial language transmission and institutional recognition. While certain languages are emotionally and culturally anchored, others may evoke feelings of dissonance or invisibility. The experience of multilingualism is thus deeply influenced by institutional frameworks and social power dynamics. The research calls attention to the critical role of educational institutions in acknowledging and supporting students' plurilingual repertoires, and advocates for a genuinely inclusive pedagogy that values all languages, taught or untaught, within the school space. It argues for a rethinking of language education to encompass a broader vision of linguistic diversity, including minoritized and underrepresented languages. Such a perspective invites the development of pedagogies attuned to the lived experiences of multilingual learners, addressing the affective, identity-related, andsocial aspects of language learning. In this regard, multilingualism is conceived not only as a cognitive or communicative asset, but as a potential vector for individual empowerment and social transformation provided it is recognized, supported, and meaningfully integrated within educational institutions.
GLaRef@CRAC2025: Should We Transform Coreference Resolution into a Text Generation Task?
International audienceWe present the submissions of our team to the Unconstrained and LLM tracks of the Computational Models of Reference, Anaphora and Coreference (CRAC2025) shared task, where we ended respectively in the fifth and the first place, but nevertheless with similar scores: average CoNLL-F1 scores of 61.57 and 62.96 on the test set, but with very large differences in computational cost. Indeed, the classical pairwise resolution system submitted to the Unconstrained track obtained similar performance but with less than 10% of the computational cost. Reflecting on this fact, we point out problems that we ran into using generative AI to perform coreference resolution. We explain how the framework of text generation stands in the way of a reliable text-global coreference representation. Nonetheless, we realize there are many potential improvements of our LLM-system; we discuss them at the end of this article
Whistled Languages and Whistled Speech
International audienceWhistled languages are secondary speech codes based on whistles anchored to, and derived from, a spoken language thanks to a relation of acoustic iconicity. Whistled languages essentially consist of a complementary/auxiliary modality of speech mostly used for distance communication that is mainly used in language communities maintaining a traditional lifestyle. Indeed, whistles propagate well in natural surroundings. This special speech practice is often called ‘whistled speech’ because its productions maintain and augment some acoustical features of spoken speech while degrading others, to adapt spoken sentences into a simple melodic line modulated in amplitude and frequency

Interpreting is an emotional effort: Public service interpreters’ coping strategies in emotionally charged situations
International audiencePublic service interpreters are at risk of burnout and vicarious trauma, as are all practitioners in the helping professions. A few rare studies on this subject show the almost systematic absence of support offered to interpreters to face these challenges. Furthermore, training and theories describing the practice of interpreting ignore the emotional aspect of this type of work. The main objective of this study is to highlight the strategies used by interpreters to cope with emotionally charged interventions. Following an exploratory and qualitative design, 21 sign and speech language interpreters agreed to recount a significant event in their careers. These narratives were subjected to a deductive thematic analysis according to three theoretical frameworks, thus allowing to highlight the relational dynamics during an interpreted intervention (stances and positionings) and the necessary cognitive efforts. Four coping strategies emerged from the analysis. Two are collaborative and seem to lead to a satisfactory resolution of the event, even if the emotional load is strong and poses significant challenges during the intervention. The other two have an obstructive impact on the communication. Taken together, the results of this study show that public service interpretation is an emotional as well as a cognitive and relational effort
