The Middle Byzantine wall-paintings in the diaconicon of the Dormition church in Kalambaka

    No full text
Στις τοιχογραφίες της Καλαμπάκας διαπιστώνονται κάποια νέα καλλιτεχνικά χαρακτηριστικά που εμφανίζονται στη μητροπολιτική τέχνη του τρίτου τετάρτου του 11ου αιώνα, περίοδο στην οποία αποδίδουμε τις τοιχογραφίες του διακονικούThe paper examines the iconography and style of the second layer of the wall-paintings in the diaconicon of the cathedral of Kalambaka (ancient Stagoi). The closest parallels are to be found in Saint Sophia of Ohrid (ca. 1052-1056), the archbishopric to which Stagoi belonged at that time. The Kalambaka wall-paintings also display certain new artistic characteristics that made their appearance in metropolitan art in the third quarter of the 11th century, which allows to date them to that period

Insecticidal effects of aqueous extracts from Artemisia herba-alba Asso and Rosmarinus officinalis L against Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophilidae)

Synthetic insecticides are frequently used to control or prevent agricultural insect pests. However, their excessive use is generally associated with environmental pollution, loss of biodiversity, health risks to humans, and adverse effects on various living beings. Considering the harmful consequences of chemical pesticides on the environment and public health, this highlights the necessity for target-specific, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly products, such as those extracted from plants. Hence, in the present study, the bio-efficacy of two botanical plant extracts obtained from the leaves of Artemisia herba-alba Asso and Rosmarinus officinalis L. by the maceration method was investigated on Drosophila melanogaster Meigen (Diptera: Drosophilidae) a widely used biological model for assessing insecticidal effects. The aqueous extracts were applied topically through different doses varying from 1 to 20 µg per larva for A. herba-alba, and 1 to 35 μg per larva for R. officinalis, on the third instar larvae, and the inhibition doses of adult emergence (ID25 and ID50) were determined. Our results indicate that the aqueous extracts of A. herba-alba showed very promising insecticide activity against D. melanogaster compared to R. officinalis extract. Topical toxicity recorded ID25 and ID50 values of 1.35 and 3.17 µg per larva for A. herba-alba, followed by 2.03 and 6.42 µg per larva for R. officinalis, respectively. These findings reflect clearly that the aqueous plant extracts of A. herba-alba and R. officinalis have great potential to develop new botanical insecticides as safe alternatives for insect-pest control

Maternal instincts of extensively managed indigenous village chickens

Indigenous village chickens (IVCs) are self-reliant, and they have accumulated traits that assure their survival as a species. The reproductive characteristics and behavioral traits are mainly ascribed to maternal instincts. This study reports the maternal instincts of IVCs gathered using face-to-face interviews with small-scale farmers. Indeed, local hens are excellent mothers. Annually, hens became broody on average four times, and in each cycle, on average, they stayed broody (interrupted laying) for 10 days. In the relatively cold highland region, hens tended to be broody for more days compared to the lowland region (t = 2.563, df = 117, p = 0.012, 95% CI: 0.4505, 3.5128). Squawking and the deterrence of cocks were the most frequently reported signs that have been shown by broody hens. Extended broody is usually discouraged by small-scale farmers by relocating the hen to neighborhoods located out of the reach of the broody hen, hanging it down, and disturbing the hen while it attempts to nest. The dry season was reportedly more suitable for the incubation of eggs and hatching of chicks, for example, the reported average hatchability rate during the dry season was 84%, whereas it was 69% in the wet season. To enhance the rate of hatchability and survival of chicks, it is advisable to match brooding practice with the ideal season and select the right type of hen. Hens with appreciable maternal instincts need to be retained in the family flocks to enhance their reproductive capacity.&nbsp

This study aims to determine the genotypes and allele frequencies of polymorphisms of bovine αS1-casein (CSN1S1), αS2-casein (CSN1S2), β-casein (CSN2) and κ-casein (CSN3) genes in Holstein-Friesian, Simmental, and Brown Swiss breeds. DNA was isolated from milk samples. It was performed for amplification of gene regions according to multiple PCR protocols determined by optimization. Sanger sequencing was performed to genotyping PCR products. CSN1S1 gene and CSN1S2 gene in three cattle breeds were observed to be monomorphic. The CSN2 gene was observed three different genotypes in Holstein-Friesian, two different genotypes in Brown Swiss. But Simmental breed was observed monomorphic. For the CSN3 gene was observed three different genotypes in Holstein-Friesian and Brown Swiss, two different genotypes in Simmental. Also, the sequence region in the bovine CSN2 gene exon 7 in this study was performed alignment (BLAST) in NCBI, Ensemble and DDBJ.  The C→G transition in consequence of alignment (BLAST) reported in this study was encountered in no previous study.  Therefore, this SNP is thought to be detected for the first time. However, it was concluded that it would be appropriate to carry out more studies on this new SNP point

Detection of highly potent Stx2a-encoding gene in pig fecal DNA in Serbia: Could commercial pig farms in Serbia act as source of human STEC infections?

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains are major zoonotic food-borne pathogens of public health importance. Although cattle are recognized as a major reservoir of STEC, these strains have been frequently isolated from the intestinal content of swine, therefore swine shed STEC in the feces. Shiga toxin genes were subtyped to assess public health implications of STEC. By subtyping the stx2 gene subtypes in swine we established the presence of the stx2e gene in 9 out of 82 stx2 positive samples. Furthermore, the zoonotically significant stx2a gene in 3 samples, which, although with a low prevalence, is of great importance for public health, enabling completion of the epidemiological picture of STEC in Serbia

    Get PDF
