Ascorbic acid enhances the treatment efficacy of tetracycline against experimentally infected Aeromonas hydrophila

    No full text
Combinations of two or more pharmaceuticals are sometimes used to achieve efficient treatment of an ailment. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the synergistic action of ascorbic acid combined with tetracycline in the treatment of Aeromonas hydrophila infection. A total of 210 apparently healthy 2-month-old uniformly sized Clarias gariepinus with a mean weight of 24.65±2.78 g were used in the study. The fish were randomly assigned to seven treatment groups (A, B, C, D, E, F and G), each in triplicate. The fish in group A were the uninfected controls, while those in groups B to G were infected with the bacterium and were either treated or not treated with tetracycline, and their diets were either supplemented with ascorbic acid or not. Growth, survival, hematological parameters, serum chemistry responses were investigated as bioindicators of health status. Infected fish deprived of L-ascorbic acid presented lower growth and survival rates. Hemorrhages, skin and fin erosions and skeletal deformities were some of the lesions observed. There were significantly (P<0.05) lower red blood cell counts and hemoglobin; significantly higher (P<0.05) total leucocyte counts; total protein, globulin and albumin; and elevated A/G ratios, also significantly higher alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and urea levels when compared with the group without ascorbic acid supplementation. This study suggested that ascorbic acid supplementation at 100 and 200 mg/kg is recommended in the diet of C. gariepinus to potentiate the action of tetracycline in the treatment of A. hydrophila infection

    Embodied queer: Multimodal narrative interventions

    No full text
The current research examines the queer body as a site of negotiation for concepts such as identity, normative violence, resistance, and reclamation, within the Greek context, aiming to bridge the research gap in the qualitative exploration of embodied queer experience. Its objective is to understand how queer individuals experience and re-appropriate their bodies in response to the hegemonic pressure that often renders them dispossessed. The study employed body-mapping, a multimodal qualitative methodology, along with appreciative semi-structured interviews of ten queer participants in Athens. Findings, created through reflexive thematic analysis, highlight the complexity of queer experience and identify four main themes. The first one is concerned with experiences of social control and homo/transphobia, which give rise to feelings of shame, inadequacy, insecurity, and diminished bodily agency. The second theme addresses the psychosomatic imprint of performativity, including anxiety, dysphoria, psychosomatic pain, experiences of self-punishment and disconnection. The third thematic field refers to the fluid and non-linear (in terms of temporality) nature of identity negotiation and includes processes such as self and bodily acceptance and the ambivalence inherent in them. The fourth theme foregrounds authentic self-expression, joy, and the retooling of the body as a site of resistance, disidentification and creative reconstruction, deeply grounded in the support of the community and the mutual care it provides. This study serves as a contribution to the qualitative investigation of embodied queer experience in Greece, encouraging further research using arts-based methodologies that engage the body, as approaches such as this one constitute practices of beneficial intervention and open new pathways for understanding

Η διδασκαλία της Γλώσσας στην εποχή της Τεχνητής Νοημοσύνης: Προτρεπτικές εντολές (prompt engineering), θεωρητικό πλαίσιο και διδακτική εφαρμογή

    No full text
In contemporary times, what was once considered a dystopian prospect- the collaboration between humans and machines- became a tangible reality, with the latter now referred to as Artificial Intelligence (AI) (Andriotakis, 2022). AI has evolved into an integral component of daily life, functioning as one of the most advanced tools for information retrieval and management. This study approaches AI as a supportive instrument for language learning, exploring its potential integration into the classroom. Emphasis is placed on Large Language Models (LLMs) and innovative applications of AI in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). In this context, special attention is given to the role of prompt engineering by educators as a means of fostering and cultivating students’ soft skill

Transport Network Resilience: Present and Future Challenges

    No full text
Departing from its classical definition, resilience has been deemed as a key element for the transportation network management as a proxy of the behavior of transportation networks under both disastrous events and non-recurrent system’s conditions. In the present paper we provide a detailed taxonomy of resilience quantification and applications to modern transportation systems. The definitions of resilience found in literature are summarized, as well as methods, metrics, and models used in various studies are critically assessed. Moreover, we delve into the state-of-the art methods for the quantification of resilience. The analyses reveal specific challenges springing from the technological and communication advancements in the transportation sector that are critically discussed and future directions for integrating the concept of resilience in the context of smart cities via smart vehicles and infrastructures are identified
