    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to study social identities, with an emphasis on social class, in mass culture texts for children. Specifically, we utilize examples of two selected scenes from the animated film Zootopia (2016) with a view to analysing characters of the film belonging to different social classes and practicing different professions. The analysis of the film scenes was based on Stamou’s (2011) and Αndroutsopoulos’ (2012) models for the study of sociolinguistic reality in fiction, Coupland’s (2007) theory of style and Attardo’s (1994) general theory of linguistic humour. As the analysis revealed, linguistic diversity is projected as a means of constructing identities and promoting stereotypical perceptions around the protagonists’ social class. Having the findings of our analysis as a springboard, and based on the pedagogy of multiliteracies, we present a teaching proposal for students of the 5th grade of primary school, with the aim of making them aware of the dominant ideologies and stereotypes attached to social classes, so that they do not accept them uncritically

    Get PDF

The status of women in ancient Greek philosophy: : from Plato to Plotinus

    Get PDF
The present paper focuses on the status of women according to the ancient philosophers and specifically from Plato to Plotinus. Initially, a general reference is made to the aspect of women through Plato's philosophy and in particular the dialogues Symposium and Republic. In the second part a reference is made to Xenophon's Economics, a philosophical dialogue, which presents how education can awaken a woman’s capabilities. Although Xenophon is not a platonic philosopher, he lived at the same time as Plato and shares with him the influence of Socrates' teaching. In the third part we examine the way Platonic philosophers viewed women through the case study of the eclectic Platonic Plutarch, who through historical examples highlights the virtues that women can also demonstrate. The fourth and final part of this paper refers to the way women were seen by the Neoplatonists and, in particular by the founder of the school, Plotinus, who recognizes no difference in the prospects of an embodied soul depending on gender. At the end, a brief reference is made to the Neoplatonic Hypatia, who through her actions offered a living example of women's contribution to philosophy and to philosophical and public life

Effects of Slow-release Urea vs conventional urea and Molasses on Digestibility, Rumen Fermentation, Nitrogen Balance and Microbial Protein yield in Sheep

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of using a type of slow- release urea (SRU) and conventional feed grade urea (CFU) with or without molasses (MO) on the diets of growing sheep. An experiment was conducted by using 4 mature-male Lori sheep (24.7 ± 0.9 kg BW) cannulated in the rumen in a- 4×4 Latin-square design with a factorial arrangement of 2×2 to evaluate the effects of two main factors of urea sources (US) (feed-grade urea versus slow- release urea) and level of molasses (M) (0% versus 20%) on intake, nutrient digestibility, nitrogen retention, rumen fermentation, and microbial nitrogen in sheep. In addition, an in situ experiment was conducted to determine N disappearance of urea sources from polyester bags. The lambs were fed with 4 isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets consisting 70% concentrate and 30% sugar cane tops (DM basis) that were offered in two equal meals (08.00 and 20.00; 5 to 10 percent orts on an as-fed basis). The following treatments implicative of (UM0) feed-grade urea (16 g/kg DM) without molasses, (UM20) feed-grade urea (16 g/kg DM) with molasses (200 g/kg), (SM0) slow-release urea (18 g/kg DM) without molasses, and (SM20) slow-release urea (18 g/kg DM) with molasses (200 g/kg). Nutrient digestibility, nitrogen balance, total purine derivatives (PD( and estimated microbial protein synthesis were not different between the treatment groups although digestibility of OM tended to increase in 20% M supplemented groups (P= 0.057). Overall, the means of total VFA concentration and its proportions were not different (P> 0.05), but with the addition of molasses to the diets, the concentrations of propionate (P= 0.016) and butyrate (P= 0.024) decreased and increased, respectively. Ruminal pH, NH3–N, and plasma metabolites were not affected by the addition of US or M (P> 0.05). Significant effects of the sampling time on ruminal pH (P= 0.002), ruminal NH3–N (P<0.001), BUN, and plasma glucose (P<0.001) were observed. It could be concluded that the inclusion of M or US did not affect the feed intake, digestibility, blood metabolites, and generally, most of the ruminal fermentation parameters after evaluation; but, more research is required to evaluate their uses in diets

The objective of this study was to ascertain the expression levels of miRNA-15a, miRNA-29b,miRNA-34a, and miRNA-223 in milk from cows, buffaloes, sheep, goats, and donkeys and to examine theirrelationship with milk composition. The miRNA expression levels were quantified by RT-qPCR, and their correlationwith the physicochemical data of the milk was examined. The expression of miRNAs was observed inall milk samples and there was a correlation between miRNA expression and milk fat, protein, dry matter andpH. A positive correlation was observed between fat and miRNA-34a in cows’milk, a positive correlation betweenfat and miRNA-29b in donkey milk (P<0.05), and a negative and significant correlation between fat andmiRNA-29b in sheep milk (P<0.05). A positive and significant correlation was identified between dry matterand miRNA-34a in sheep milk (P<0.05), whereas a negative and significant correlation was observed betweendry matter and miRNA-223 in goat milk (P<0.05). Additionally, a negative and significant correlation was foundbetween dry matter and miRNA-29b in sheeps’milk (P<0.05). A positive and significant relation ship was identifiedbetween miRNA-34a expression and pH in sheep milk (P<0.05). It can be concluded that miRNAs play animportant role in milk composition, hygiene, health and technology. Further studies are recommended to gain adeeper understanding of these aspects

Determinants of school performance in a sample of adolescents in Greece

    No full text
Background: A school environment that provides opportunities to learn, practice, and interact with peers can foster adolescents’ mental health and quality of life. School performance serves as an indicator of cognitive abilities and self-perceptions, which are essential for academic success and life satisfaction. Methods: The study aims to assess the association between school performance and socio-economic factors, anthropometric characteristics, and sedentary behavior in a sample of 440 adolescents from 55 junior high schools in Athens and the surrounding area. School performance was assessed through the average overall score and scores in mathematics, language, and history from the last trimester of the curriculum. Logistic regression models were used to examine how socio-economic, personal, and anthropometric characteristics were associated with the risk of performing below the median (score <17/20). Results: Overall, girls compared to boys (OR=0.44, 95%CI: 0.28 to 0.69) and members of privileged households compared to their less privileged counterparts (OR= 0.57, 95%CI: 0.32 to 1.03) were more likely to perform better at school. Adolescents of non-Greek origin (OR=3.70, 95%CI: 2.09 to 6.54) were more likely to perform worse compared to Greeks or Cypriots. The feeling of unsafety (OR=1.11, 95%CI: 1.02 to 1.20) was associated with performance below the median, whereas parents of higher- performing children were more likely to have higher education (OR= 0.53, 95%CI: 0.32 to 0.87). Conclusions: These findings can be useful in designing, implementing and monitoring fit-for-purpose public health promoting strategies following a comprehensive and sustainable approach recognizing the adolescents’ multiple and variable needs
