Planned Conservation and Local Sustainable Development in Local Contexts: The Guanyinge Teahouse Project in Chengdu, China
In China, the conservation of low-level architectural heritage faces significant challenges, calling for sustainable methods that align with local development needs. Unlike high-grade heritage sites, which benefit from strong governmental and expert support through top-down management, low-level structures often struggle due to insufficient resources. As a case study, this paper examines the Guanyige Teahouse in Chengdu—an early 20th-century building deeply rooted in regional tea culture to explore practical conservation strategies. The project emphasizes authenticity while developing a sustainable model that integrates the heritage site with its surrounding community. Rather than treating conservation as a standalone initiative, the approach frames it as a longterm, evolving process. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of conducting a multi-dimensional analysis considering economic, social, and technological dimensions—before implementing conservation efforts, ensuring a structured and enduring conservation framework
Sexualized drug use and its association with sexual health among men who have sex with men in Cyprus
Sexualised drug use (SDU) i.e., the use of psychoactive substances in a sexual context, has been becoming the focus of researchers’ interest over the past years. This is due to SDU's rising popularity, especially among the LGBTQI+ people and its impact on sexual and overall health of people engaging in it. SDU’s frequency in Europe, including Greece, and Middle East among men who have sex with men (MSM) is reported to be as high as 26.7% to 51%. Our aim was to examine SDU in regard to the demographics and sexual health of MSM in Cyprus. 460 MSM, with mean age 31.2 (SD=9.1), completed an online questionnaire, which included questions on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) diagnoses, condom use, Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), frequency of SDU, number of sexual partners, and polydrug use. SDU was reported by 46.7% (215) of the participants and was predicted by age, HIV status, and the number of sexual partners. MSM in Cyprus report high rates of SDU, which is related to sexual health-related variables. Further research should focus on patterns of use, impact and needs of people engaging in “chemsex” specifically. Healthcare professionals in Cyprus should have adequate interdisciplinary training in SDU, that is, the effects, harm reduction and therapeutic approach regarding the specific substances used, as well as the overall challenges, such as sexual inhibition, minority stress and probable HIV stigma people engaging in SDU deal with
From the Periphery to the Centre of Historiography: Paths to Central Europe’s Rural Past
This article deals with concrete historiographical developments in central European social, and more specifically rural, history. During the early 1980s in Vienna, a (new) social or rather socio-cultural history of rural Austria, especially for the time period between the late nineteenth century and the outbreak of the Second World War, moved from the periphery to the centre of historiography, where it was met with a positive response by historians and the public. Thanks primarily to the collection of numerous life records, historical subjects came into the fore of research and new issues were explored under the theoretical and methodological auspices of historiographical trends that were partly native to German-speaking academia, such as 1990s historical anthropology. A multifaceted rural world in its own right has defied the primacy of the industrial and the urban world in old as well as in new forms of social history
A mixed-method approach to assessing intercultural communication needs: The case of public service interpreting in asylum contexts
This article focuses on examining the research methods used to evaluate intercultural communication needs in two research projects conducted between 2022 and 2024. The first, the Erasmus+ project titled “ReTrans Project: Working with Interpreters in Refugee Transit Zones: Capacity building and awareness-raising for higher education contexts”, in which DFLTI[1] participated as a partner, focused on developing digital training materials to raise awareness of interpreting in humanitarian and transborder migration contexts. The second, “Activities Arising from the Partnership Agreement with the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting of Ionian University”, was part of the Project “Enhancing and building-up national capacity of migration and asylum strategic planning” (Pre-defined project 3), funded by the EEA Financial Mechanism 2014-2021, and aimed to design a robust accreditation system for public service interpreters in Greece.
This article summarizes and evaluates the methodologies employed in both projects. Although similar, each project approached the collection of data and its analysis from different perspectives. To this end, the main aim of the article is to reach safe conclusions on best practices for research related to public service interpreting.

'Provintia Lakedemonie' and Laconian Chamareti in 1204: A New Perspective on ‘Partitio Romanie’
The Fourth Crusade document known as Partitio Romanie outlines a partition of the Byzantine Empire but omits several imperial provinces. N. Oikonomides proposed that these territories were seditiously distanced from the short-lived regime imposed by the Crusaders in Constantinople in 1203. Provintia Lakedemonie, a province of Lacedaemonia attested only in this document and arguably the power-base of a Laconian “tyrant” named Chamaretus, provides a case-study particularly apposite for resuming this discussion, focusing on a range of multifarious problems assessed by Oikonomides
Critical Notes on the Greek Homogenizing National Discourse from the Perspective of the Post-National Discourse
In this paper, I elaborate on specific tools provided by Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) for exposing and critiquing the hypocrisy of the ‘humanitarian/antiracist values’ of the Greek national discourse. In particular, I focus on the interplay between the macro- and micro-levels of discourse and Ι apply Reisigl and Wodak’s (2001) concept of critique to reveal inconsistencies often masked by manipulative hegemonic discourse. I also explore the concept of prospective critique based on alternative, antagonistic discourses aiming to improve communication. Drawing on Fairclough’s (1992) and Laclau and Mouffe’s (1985) frameworks, I examine how antagonism between discourses challenges taken-for-granted assumptions. In this context, I review my research on the asymmetric representation of migrant and majority populations in Greek national discourse. Moreover, I propose post-national discourse as a means of critiquing the Greek national discourse, exposing the constructed and purportedly humanitarian character of its homogeneity and questioning its acceptance. Finally, I argue that this critique can inform educational approaches that destabilize homogeneous worldviews and promote cultural and linguistic hybridity, fostering more equitable interactions between migrant and majority populations
Exploring the Critical in Critical Approaches to Language Education
The article explores how the term critical is interpreted across four key approaches to language education: critical thinking, critical pedagogy, critical literacy, and critical language awareness. It examines the theoretical principles, epistemological assumptions, and pedagogical goals of each, highlighting both convergences and differences. Particular attention is given to the kinds of learners and citizens each approach seeks to cultivate. The analysis encourages reflection on how criticality is understood and enacted in diverse educational contexts, offering insights for more coherent and transformative language teaching practices
SECONDARY MATHEMATICS TEACHERS' CONCEPTIONS ABOUT THEIR CURRENT PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY
The dynamically accomplished nature of secondary mathematics teachers’ professional identity, through the emergence of new practices in time and in different contexts, illuminates, via teachers’ conceptions, aspects of their current professional identity, informing about the manner in which it is being developed
