Democracy Under Pressure: Political Trajectories and Regime Transformation in Contemporary Greece
The proposed research analyzes the trajectory of democracy and rights in Greece from 1950 to 2023, emphasizing on the post-1974 period of democratic consolidation and the recent challenges of backsliding. Drawing on an internationally approved and validated multidimensional data set and extensive theoretical insights, it examines how economic crises, executive aggrandizement, and a varied degree of institutional erosion have affected electoral integrity, civil liberties, and social cohesion. Greece’s democratic institutions remain formally intact but face rising pressures due to what is perceived as declining trust, politicized governance, and socio-economic inequality. The aim of this paper is to offer evidence-based analysis and policy recommendations to strengthen liberal-democratic safeguards and reinvigorate civic participation, aiming to ensure democratic resilience in the face of increasing internal and external pressures.
Book Review: Soft Skills and Transformations of Work – Theoretical and Empirical Approaches
The collective volume "Soft Skills and Transformations of Work" constitutes a substantial contribution to the ongoing dialogue about the future of work and education. It convincingly demonstrates that soft skills are not merely complementary to technical ones but form a fundamental pillar of employability, social cohesion, and resilience in the face of contemporary challenges. This is a volume worth reading not only by the academic community but also by policymakers and practitioners, as it provides valuable insights and analytical tools for understanding and addressing the social and occupational transformations of our time
Introduction
This introduction situates the volume within the centenary (2022) of France’s overseas cultural cooperation network and, more broadly, within a century of French cultural and scientific diplomacy. It presents this diplomacy as a long-term historical construction aimed at circulating language, arts, and knowledge internationally, from the prestige politics of Louis XIV and the rise of French as a diplomatic language to the creation of durable institutions abroad. Special attention is given to the French School at Athens (1846) as a pioneering model of scholarly presence, and to the Alliance Française (1883) as a key instrument of linguistic influence. The twentieth century’s geopolitical ruptures are shown to have accelerated institutionalization (from SOFE to the DGRC), while a specifically French preference is emphasized: keeping culture at some distance from overt political propaganda—unlike early U.S. “public diplomacy”—with academics playing a central role until the 1960s. Against this backdrop, Franco-Hellenic relations are framed as strong “elective affinities,” rooted in philhellenism, the legacy of the French Revolution and the Enlightenment, and longstanding mutual admiration, evoked through Seferis, Malraux, Tsatsos, and de Gaulle’s 1963 speech in the Greek Parliament. The introduction then outlines the issue’s contributions and concludes on the resilience and adaptability of France’s cultural diplomacy.
The Trauma of Life’s Meaninglessness: : A Philosophical Reading of Monty Python’s Life of Brian
How would it feel if one day we could fulfill a dream that many of us share—to spend a few hours or days in a beloved time and place we consider unique and unrepeatable? Personally, I would choose to visit Athens during the height of classical antiquity, to meet the man I regard as the most avant-garde artist of all time, Euripides, and have a “coffee” with him. But that, of course, is another story. Monty Python, on the other hand, chose a different setting in “Life of Brian”: not the classical world, but the hazy transitional period often mislabeled as “Late Antiquity”—a time teetering on the brink of the Middle Ages. Medieval society is unable to confront the trauma of finitude, the existential void of a life stripped of meaning, whether on an individual or collective scale. It is precisely into this world that Monty Python, with characteristic wit, drop their unwitting hero, Brian, not in search of answers, but for the sheer absurdity of it. The deeper philosophical implications of this move, however, are left to us to untangle
Lamentation, Exile, Trauma in Sophocles’ Antigone and Ajax
Sophocles’ Antigone, performed in 442 BCE, and Ajax in 442 BCE are twin responses to social ostracization and exile in a world where heroism was being redefined. While the plays were performed before the historic Peloponnesian War, they are responses to the topical war with Persia that Sophocles had witnessed firsthand. The “Seven against Thebes,” the popular civil war which has Polynices and Eteocles, two brothers locked in a bitter fratricidal battle for the throne against Creon’s rule, is central to Antigone. Ajax is about the Trojan war, which ends with the mental breakdown of the eponymous hero, Ajax, as he was denied the mantle of Achilles because of Odysseus, Menelaus, and Agamemnon. The central conflict in Antigone is between civic duty and personal morality, while in Ajax, it is more subjectivized and interiorized inner conflict. The plays trace the breakdown of language due to trauma, and move away from the symbolic to the semiotic and the maternal as expressed in lamentations and agony, using onomatopoeic Greek words before the suicides of the protagonists. The plays are closer to the Dionysian mode that is linked to orgiastic ecstasy, passion, and darkness (Nietzsche, The Birth of Tragedy, 1990). In Antigone, the central conflict is between the king’s edict and the sacred duty to the dead. In Ajax, it is neurosis and hallucination, which leads to the mass slaughter of livestock mistaken for the Greek heroes who were his enemies. The plays are poignant responses to the collective trauma created by war, and a sense of dislocation, alienation in a world that is suddenly bereft of meaning. The suicides of the protagonists are cathartic, a comment on the shifting political and social climate of Athens
ΤΟ ΔΗΜΟΤΙΚΟ ΤΡΑΓΟΥΔΙ ΑΠΟ ΤΟ ΠΛΑΙΣΙΟ ΤΗΣ ΠΑΡΑΔΟΣΙΑΚΗΣ ΚΟΙΝΟΤΗΤΑΣ ΣΤΗ ΘΕΑΤΡΙΚΗ ΣΚΗΝΗ: Η ΠΕΡΙΠΤΩΣΗ ΤΗΣ ΠΑΡΑΣΤΑΣΗΣ ΜΕ ΤΑ ΤΡΑΓΟΥΔΙΑ ΣΟΥ ΜΙΛΩ, ΘΕΑΤΡΟ ΑΛΦΑ ΙΔΕΑ ΑΘΗΝΩΝ [THE FOLK SONG FROM THE CONTEXT OF THE TRADITIONAL COMMUNITY TO THE THEATRE STAGE: THE CASE OF THE PERFORMANCE TALKING TO YOU WITH SONGS, ALPHA IDEA THEATRE, ATHENS]
The folk song is deeply rooted in its historical and cultural context. It is considered an inexhaustible source of information regarding the cultural identity of non-urban, symbiotic, and rural communities. Moreover, as we will see next, the folk song a) serves as a foundation for musical-theatre performances and modern, artistic, educational programs, and b) inspires artists to integrate it into a new framework of action. This research aims to redefine the position of the folk song and its ritual acts as a «spectacle» within contemporary artistic productions, incorporating elements of dramatic performance on theatrical stages. Therefore, it proposes and analyzes the «performance in the micro-place» as a project of auto-ethnographic and artistic research, which a) combines Ethnomusicology with Performing Arts [interdisciplinary research and embodied & vocal performative practices], and b) involves the creation of new small [micro] workshops for the research, teaching, and performance of the folk song, ranging from a simple classroom to outdoor or artistic venues (nature, theatres, etc.). In the field, the ethnographer also interacts with his voice-body as a teacher and performer. In conclusion, through this research, «performance in the micro-place» follows the autoethnographic method to define the folk song as a holistic model of educational and artistic research and performance in new cultural environments.

ΞΕΝΟΙ ΘΙΑΣΟΙ ΣΤΗΝ ΟΘΩΜΑΝΙΚΗ ΘΕΣΣΑΛΟΝΙΚΗ, 1870-1912 [FOREIGN THEATRE COMPANIES IN OTTOMAN THESSALONIKI, 1870–1912]
This article examines the activities of foreign touring theatre companies in Ottoman Thessaloniki between 1870 and 1912. This period is significant for two reasons: it represents a largely unexplored chapter in the city’s theatrical history and marks the beginning of a systematic theatrical movement from 1870 onwards. The study concludes in 1912, the year Thessaloniki was incorporated into the modern Greek state, when performances by foreign companies declined due to political changes. The article aims to outline the conditions under which foreign performances were staged and identify the factors that made Thessaloniki a key stop for touring troupes. Additionally, it seeks to provide a detailed account of the diverse ethnic companies that performed in the city's theatres, examining their theatrical selections and repertoire. This comprehensive analysis offers a broader understanding of the theatrical landscape presented by foreign companies in Ottoman Thessaloniki
