    No full text

This study aimed to evaluate the probiotic properties of the bacteriocin-producing strains E. faecium DP8.3, E. faecium DP9.3 and E. mundtii DP35.1. All strains were found to survive at pH 3.0 and maintained their viability in the presence of 0.4% phenol and 100 ppm lysozyme. In simulated gastric juice adjusted to pH 3.0, the viable cell counts for E. faecium DP8.3, DP9.3, and E. mundtii DP35.1 were 8.96±0.01, 8.37±0.00, and 8.63±0.21, respectively. The bacteriocin-producing strains were capable of surviving at bile salt concentrations of 0.3%, 0.5%, and 1%.  Additionally, these strains were able to grow in the presence of taurocholic acid, glycocholic acid, taurodeoxylic acid sodium salts, and glycodeoxycholic acid sodium salts. The strains exhibited high hydrophobicity, autoaggregation, and coaggregation abilities. According to the results, these bacteriocin-producing strains possess probiotic properties, suggesting their potential use as protective probiotic cultures in food production. Further studies, including in vivo studies and food trials, is required to assess the potential of these strains as protective probiotic cultures in the food industry

Derrida and the Limit of the Human/non-Human Other in African Indigenous Beliefs

    No full text
The article examines the ways African indigenous ideologies, belief systems, and mythologies, as these are expressed in native art and storytelling, challenge dominant frames of conceptualizing and perceiving the human and rearticulate the being-with with the non-human Other, through Derrida’s limitrophic understanding of the dividing line between human and animal. Derrida’s pliable neologism of limitrophy expresses the disobedience towards the rigidly drawn limits between the human and the non-human Other. The article discusses the African indigenous beliefs of ubuntu and ukama and their formulation of human/animal connections in conjunction with the Derridean limitrophic approach to the division between human/non-human Other. It then proceeds to consider the manifestation of these beliefs in indigenous art and storytelling of the San peoples of southern Africa, discussing the ties of affinity between Derrida’s reflections on the limits of the animal/human binary in Western thought as these are expressed in his intellectual ruminations on the nature of the division between the beast and the sovereign, and the cultural expressions of the San that manifest the animal/human ontological convergence

Women’s narratives on caring for people living with dementia: Exploring challenges and resources

    No full text
Dementia is a growing global health issue, affecting not only those diagnosed, but also their close environment, particularly family members, most often women, who take on caring responsibilities. The present research aims to explore the experiences of women caring for people with dementia within the Greek sociocultural context, focusing on the difficulties they encounter, the strategies they adopt to cope. The study is grounded in the phenomenological paradigm, seeking to highlight the subjective experience as it is lived and given meaning by the participants themselves. The sample consisted of 12 women caregivers of different ages and social characteristics from three major Greek cities, who care for or have cared for relatives with dementia in the past. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews that integrated appreciative inquiry activities and multimodal methods, such as photo-elicitation and projective cards, which contributed to the emergence of symbolic meanings. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used, through which common themes was identified regarding the practical and emotional challenges of caregiving, its impact on relationships and roles, fears and existential concerns, loss management and personal sources of meaning and resilience. The study concludes that caring for people with dementia is a complex and multidimensional experience, and as such requires greater recognition and support at both social and institutional levels

Self-determination refers to ensuring the autonomy of the individual, who acts as a causal agent in his life without external influences and the development of self-determination skills is associated with increased levels of quality of life and independence in adulthood. Parents play a key role in the development of self-determination skills and this study explores the self-determination skills of young adults with autism spectrum disorder through the lived experiences and views of their parents. The study relied on qualitative methodology and a semi-structured interview guide was created. Interviews were conducted with five parents, with an average age of 51.8 years. The results of the study showed that some of the self-determination skills of young adults with autism spectrum disorder, such as decision-making, self-awareness or choice-making, are quite developed. Conversely, skills such as goal setting or problem-solving need strengthening and improvement. All parents highlighted the benefits of self-determination and the obstacles to its development and pointed out that their role in strengthening self-determination is active and decisive

Interpreters’ Perspectives on Court Interpreting in Abu Dhabi: Challenges and Future Prospects

    Get PDF
Court interpreting is a crucial aspect of the legal system as it is a guarantee for those who do not speak the language of the court to understand and effectively participate in the court proceedings. Court interpreters’ job is to facilitate the communication between people who speak different languages and are involved in the trail to ensure a fair and just legal process. They usually face some challenges through their interpretation journey in courts. Given the fact that UAE is a multilingual and multicultural country, it is assumed that court interpreting is an important area for study. Working in a major city’s courts as Abu Dhabi is considered a challenge for some, especially when it comes taking time to adapt to difficult situations and training. This research sheds light on the current position of court interpreting in Abu Dhabi by investigating the various types of challenges encountered by court interpreters in Abu Dhabi courts and suggesting some practical actions for improving the quality of this industry. To collect data for this study, structured questionnaire using Likert Scale and some open-ended questions are given to a random sample of court interpreters in Abu Dhabi. The findings show that court interpreters in Abu Dhabi lack of academic background and sufficient training.&nbsp

Η μορφή των κτηρίων αντανακλά τα ρεύματα της αρχιτεκτονικής των κοσμικών κτηρίων του Αγίου Όρους τον 18ο και τον 19ο αιώναThe monastery of Xeropotamou had affected, during the 20th century, by two catastrophic fires in 1950 and 1973. The fire-damaged part (1973) occupies the east part of the south and the south part of the eastern wing. It was built in four, at least, construction phases: the first can be dated between 1527 and 1610, the second in 1747, the third in 1837 and the fourth in1852. The appearance of the buildings reflects the architectural trends of the secular buildings of Mount Athos in the 18th and 19th centuries
