    No full text
Abstract This study explores the perspectives of school psychologists on implementing positive psychology in school environments within the Greek context, focusing on their understanding, acceptance, and the practical challenges they face in applying such interventions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight school psychologists, and qualitative data analysis was employed. Psychologists recognize the value of positive psychology in enhancing students' emotional well-being and resilience, although many have limited training and knowledge in this field. While they appreciate the potential benefits of positive psychology, they express concerns that the lack of comprehensive training and guidance might render interventions superficial. External factors also pose significant barriers. The psychologists consider the traditional Greek educational system, with its emphasis on academic performance, as an obstacle to integrating interventions that promote emotional development. Collaboration with teachers and parents is also deemed critical, however, their lack of awareness about positive psychology often limits the effectiveness of these interventions.                           &nbsp

Refugee and Migrant Health constitutes a major challenge for host countries and their respective health systems due to the vulnerability and diversity of people in transit. The WHO outlines four models of health system response to address the health needs of Refugee and Migrants (RMs). Greece has hosted a significant number of RMs for over a decade, yet its public health system (ESY) has shown limited adaptation, lacking a clear care model οr mixture of models for this population group. This reality is, among others, due to the convergence of structural weaknesses of the ESY, the absence of a national RM health strategy, and restrictive migration policies that hinder access to care and lead to negative social determination of health. A transformative health policy approach is urgently needed—focusing on RM - inclusive health system strengthening, the adoption of a national RM health strategy, and the reversal of restrictive migration policies

No recovery: long-term monitoring reveals low and fluctuating populations of the endemic reef-building vermetid snail Dendropoma anguliferum on Levantine shores

    No full text
Dendropoma anguliferum is an endemic reef-building vermetid gastropod of the southeastern Mediterranean that has historically been considered a key ecosystem engineer. In studies from the past decade and a half, this gastropod has been shown to have very low abundance compared to past anecdotal data. A recent study, based on a single survey at a single site, claims that there are signs of recovery of this species on the Israeli coast. Our study analyzed 16 years of seasonal monitoring data from four rocky shore sites to assess long-term population trends along this coast. Results show that D. anguliferum maintains a persistently low average cover (0 1.5%) at the seaward edge of the platform, with many temporal fluctuations, indicating no sustained recoveries. A comparative analysis with this recent short-term survey in a region similar to one of the monitoring sites yielded comparable abundance estimates, validating both methodologies for assessing the abundance of this sessile, aggregative, species. In contrast, the co-occurring vermetid, Vermetus triquetrus, exhibited much higher cover at some sites and strong fluctuations. This study emphasizes the value of persistent ecological monitoring over one-off snapshot surveys for evaluating species trajectories and developing conservation strategies. These findings also underscore the need for coordinated, continuous, Mediterranean-wide efforts using standardized protocols and advocates for the use of advanced technologies to assess the long-term status of vermetid reefs at the basin scale, especially in the face of increasing pressure due to climate change and other stressors

Determination of abdominal aortic elasticity changes in naturally infected dogs with canine visceral leishmaniasis

    No full text
The aim of the study was to detect and assess early-stage hypertension in dogs with Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis (CanL), by determining the changes in elasticity occurring on the abdominal aorta, in addition to the use of oscillometric measurements. A total of 44 animals, consisting of 32 animals diagnosed with CanL and 12 healthy dogs, were evaluated. The diseased animals were categorized into four different groups based on the stages of CanL. The dogs with CanL and the healthy dogs were assessed using Doppler ultrasonography to determine the changes in abdominal aorta elasticity according to their respective stages. CanL -infected animals were identified in different stages, including Stage I, Stage II, and Stage III. It was found that there were no significant changes in the blood pressure values measured through oscillometric method based on the results of abdominal aorta elasticity. However, a significant decrease in abdominal aorta elasticity (p<0.05) was observed in infected animals at Stage III compared to healthy animals and in infected animals at Stage II compared to Stage III, according to the clinical staging of the disease. It was determined that the abdominal aortic elasticity of CanL-infected animals tends to decrease as the disease stage progresses, and these changes can directly affect the systemic circulation.

The Impact of Seasonal Climate Conditions on Fungal Biodiversity in Barn Air

    No full text
This study examines the seasonal effects of climatic variables on fungal biodiversity in the indoor air of cattle barns in Turkey. Over 12 months, air samples were collected twice a month from 10 cattle barns, resulting in isolating 72 fungal species from 18 genera by using sophisticated microbiological sampling and MALDI-TOF MS identification techniques. Dominant genera such as Acremonium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, and Penicillium were detected throughout the year, underlining their continuous presence. Seasonal variability is evident, with Cladosporium and Alternaria in high amount in warmer months, while Penicillium is more prevalent in colder months. Environmental variables, including temperature and humidity, strongly correlated with fungal concentrations, and ideal ranges were identified for the major species. These findings highlight the health hazards of airborne fungal spores to cattle and barn workers and focus on the need for improved air quality management techniques in livestock facilities. The study constitutes a fundamental understanding of fungal distribution and environmental interactions and calls for further in-depth research to mitigate health hazards and improve barn air quality

    No full text
Newborn calf mineral status, including chromium (Cr), is critical for primary growth and reduction of stress effects as well as the health of the newborn calf. Consequently, it is essential to supply minerals at sufficient levels for the suckling calves. In order to evaluate of The effect of feeding milk enriched of inorganic, organic and chromium nanoparticles supplements on performance, blood minerals, biochemical, antioxidant and hormonal of Holstein suckling calves under heat stress, 32 calves with average weight 37± 3 kg in a complete design were randomly selected with 8 replications and 4 treatments. Experimental treatments include milk without chromium supplement (control), milk containing 3 mg of chromium in mineral form per day, milk containing 3 mg of chromium in the form of chromium-methionine per day and milk contained 3 mg of chromium in the form of chromium nanoparticles per day.The results showed that milk enrichment with chromium nanoparticles increased final weight, daily weight gain and dry matter intake. Treatments receiving different forms of chromium showed higher chromium, insulin, glucose, SOD, triiodothyronine, tetraiodothyronine, glutathioneperoxidase and catalase levels in blood than control group. But cortisol, total antioxidant capacity and malondialdehyde of blood in calves consuming different forms of chromium decreased compared to the control group. In general, the use of chromium, especially in the forms of chromium-methionine and chromium nanoparticles, is recommended in calves affected by heat stress. &nbsp

Expert perspectives on brucellosis control: challenges, risk factors, and management strategies in Iranian livestock

    No full text
Brucellosis, one of the most common zoonoses, affects the livestock sector and threatens human health. The WHO and WOAH have advised efforts to manage or eradicate brucellosis, although only a few developed countries have achieved this. In this study, a qualitative study employing a questionnaire tool under a snowball sampling technique at the national level helped to assess the expert viewpoints on animal brucellosis in Iran. This survey research was conducted from September 2022 to February 2023 by a questionnaire using the approach of expert opinion, which consisted of three main fields concerning the status and management of brucellosis in Iran, demographic data of experts, and risk factors connected with brucellosis on dairy farms. A total of 481 experts, primarily veterinarians, participated, and the response rate was 68%. An expert review of the questionnaire ensured validity, while reliability was measured using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The responses show essential insights into the management challenges of brucellosis control, such as improving vaccination strategies, testing new cattle for brucellosis, and educating farmers. Most experts supported regular vaccination, but farmer cooperation, insurance policies, and compensation for testing and culling were noted as concerns. Expert assessments of various risk factors highlighted the introduction of untested cows and poor farm hygiene as significant threats to brucellosis control in Iran. Therefore, it highlights the need for an effective strategy in brucellosis prevention, farmers' engagement, and systemic support because of the increasing incidence rate among veterinary professionals and farm workers
