Latynizmy w powieściach bałkańskich Teodora Tomasza Jeża

The considerations presented in the article were inspired by Professor Walczak’s remarks about T.T. Jeż’s overuse of Latinisms. The conducted research confirms this thesis also in relation to the Balkan novels – an analysis of their lexis showed that one of the most numerous groups of foreign vocabulary items contained in them are words of Latin origin. Their significant number was dictated by, among others, their subject matter, the genre of the texts or the artistic considerations. In addition, it should not be forgotten that the Polish language was and still is significantly saturated with Latinisms. The vocabulary originating from the Roman cultural circle which was recorded in the examined material included words and acquired phrases as well as quotations and even word-formation particles. Jeż not only used a specific set of Latinisms, but also modified them by introducing new words. The considerations presented in the article were inspired by Professor Walczak’s remarks about T.T. This article constitutes the first part of paper cycle devoted to 1,117 Polish derivational neologisms in Obserwatorium Językowe Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego (Language Observatory of University of Warsaw). Its aim is to present and analyze 572 new substantival derivatives in the Polish language. The author divides them into groups of derivational neologisms created by the use of the same formative technique and affix. He states that 529 of them were formed by the use of 37 suffixes, 19 – with 8 prefixes, 16 – by the change of paradigm and 8 – by adding prefix and suffix simultaneously. The study concludes that the biggest class of described new substantival derivatives in contemporary Polish language consists of suffixal structures. As for morphemes used to create them, suffixes -ka, -(ów)ka and -(ow’)ec turned out to be the most productive. This article constitutes the first part of paper cycle devoted to 1,117 Polish derivational neologisms in Obserwatorium Językowe Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego (Language Observatory of University of Warsaw). The Confessional Diversity of 16th-century Polish Religious Lexis: Recapitulation and Research Postulates

The author summarises the research conducted so far on the confessional differentiation of Polish religious lexis in the 16th century, which was initiated in the 1960s by Konrad Górski, a literary historian. In his publication Zagadnienia słownictwa reformacji polskiej (The Issue of the Polish Reformation Vocabulary), the scholar argued that Protestants used different words than Catholics to designate important religious concepts, and that lexis was an important factor to identify the denomination. This thesis had a significant impact on the assumptions and research objectives formulated by subsequent scholars who addressed the relationship between denomination and vocabulary. In the section of the article containing research postulates, attention is drawn to thenecessity of verifying Górski’s position, which was already initiated to a limited extent, mainly in the works by Tomasz Lisowski, who pointed out other than confessional determinants of lexical choices in the 16th-century translations of the Bible. It is considerednecessary in the postulated research to broaden the resource base, to take into account the pragmatic diversity of the source texts (sender-receiver relations, intentions), to introduce numerical data objectifying the conclusions, as well as a comparative reference to the status in other languages. The author summarises the research conducted so far on the confessional differentiation of Polish religious lexis in the 16th century, which was initiated in the 1960s by Konrad Górski, a literary historian. The Portrayal of the COVID-19 Pandemic in the Media

The aim of the paper is to present and discuss the portrayal of the COVID-19 pandemic in the media. Our primary focus is on Polish press articles, supplemented by occasional references to international sources. The analysis reveals that, much like in previous pandemics, the media narrative around COVID-19 is heavily metaphorical, aiming to simplify the understanding of this unfamiliar event. The most common metaphors involve war and battle, which have sparked controversy and significant criticism for their militaristic connotations. Our paper also examines alternative representations of the pandemic, such as natural disasters (with the fire metaphor being particularly apt), sports (including football, mountain climbing, and marathons), and other innovative comparisons (comparing the pandemic to an animal, driving a car, etc.)

“Into Memory It Is Engraved – In Memory It Is Treasured – From Memory It Fades”. On the Perception of Memory in Conversations With Witnesses of History on the Example of the Archives of the Warsaw Rising Museum

The aim of this article is to discuss the ways in which memory is perceived in genologically homogeneous texts. The subject of the research is the word pamięć (ang. “memory”) recalled by a witness of history or by a person interviewing him/her. The texts constituting the Oral History Archive of the Warsaw Rising Museum were the source of the analyses. The linguistic view of the phenomenon of memory made use of such concepts as the linguistic image of the world, the assumption of the genological and discursive specificity of each text, and collective memory. It was established that the use of the word memory by both the questioners and the narrators indicates its receptacle character, i.e. seeing memory as a place where elements of the past are stored, with the image of memory in the narrators’ account being dynamised. The second of the meanings is also actualised in the statements of the narrators, capturing memory as a specific capacity of the human mind, which the veterans subject to metareflection, assessing it as good, weak or incomplete. They recognise its malleable and changeable character. Witnesses also use the word memory in a third meaning, i.e. to recall the memory of past persons or events in order to honour them. The aim of this article is to discuss the ways in which memory is perceived in genologically homogeneous texts. Full text link
The paper is devoted to the specificities of the acquisition of L2 Polish by speakers of a closely related language (East Slavic one), with specific regard to the language-teaching consequences of said proximity. After an introduction to the current historical and sociolinguistic context of the East Slavic immigration to Poland, the data presents the concept of “intercomprehension”. Its impact on the acquisition of L2 Polish is illustrated by the use of empirical data collected by the author’s research team. The article is concluded by means of a reflection on the value of multilingualism in the school system and the skills required of Polish teachers in the present historical contingencies. It is argued in particular that due to the great number of Ukrainian pupils enrolled in the Polish schools, it is advisable for Polish school teachers to have at least some knowledge of the native languages of these pupils, with the primary goal of improving communication in stressful situations and adequately interpret and correct their errors in L2 Polish. The paper is devoted to the specificities of the acquisition of L2 Polish by speakers of a closely related language (East Slavic one), with specific regard to the language-teaching consequences of said proximity. On the Usefulness of Erazm Rykaczewski’s Słownik języka polskiego in Research on the Territorial Diversification of Old Polish (Preliminary Remarks)

The aim of the article is to demonstrate the usefulness of Erazm Rykaczewski’s Słownik języka polskiego for the research on the regional diversity of Polish. The comparison of the register of 19th-century Modern Polish regionalisms, which I compiled, with theprovincialisms recorded in SR showed that, although the dictionary only included 176 of the analysed units, it also collected 27 new units, not recorded at all or not classified as elements of regional Polish in any of the dictionary publications I analysed. Hence, the results prove that SR is an interesting material base for lexicological research on regional Polish. The aim of the article is to demonstrate the usefulness of Erazm Rykaczewski’s Słownik języka polskiego for the research on the regional diversity of Polish.
