The article presents an analysis of the names of sports clubs appearing in the top-level Polish football, volleyball, basketball and hockey leagues. A total of 107 names were analysed. The research question concerned the lexical composition of the names and potential differences in naming between individual sports. The research showed a tendency for names to become longer and for sponsors’ terms to be used in their composition. The exception is the names of football clubs, which are the most established and are a market brand in their own right

The Power of Inherited Language in Multilingual Adults. Survey Study

The considerations in this article are focused on the phenomenon of widespread multilingualism in Europe and the increasing number of multilingual adults. A language biography was used as a research tool to access languages in dreams, prayer and thought. The study was conducted on 68 multilingual people. The following results were obtained: regardless of the bilinguals’ age and country of residence, inheritance languages appear in the majority of the respondents (50/68) in dreams. An even greater proportion in favour of inheritance languages was observed in relation to the language of prayer or thought (50/60). The study confirms the hypothesis that inheritance language is a reservoir of childhood experiences and resurfaces actively in emotional and personal activities performed by bilinguals. The considerations in this article are focused on the phenomenon of widespread multilingualism in Europe and the increasing number of multilingual adults. The article analyses selected posts published by young mothers in two private Facebook groups entitled Noworodki, niemowlaki, dzieci – wymiana doświadczeń (Newborns, toddlers, children – sharing experiences) and Karmienie piersią i między karmieniami (Breastfeeding and between feedings). The issue influencing the analysis is conceptualisation which is one of the basic concepts in cognitive linguistics. The result of linguistic reflection is the observation of ways for conceptualising motherhood that are associated with psychophysical problems and depressive states of women in the perinatal period. Due to the thematic and temporal scope of the material, 45 entries published in 2022 and 2023 concerning the most difficult experiences were described. The collected examples were assigned to one of six distinguished conceptualisations, each related to the poor psychophysical condition of mothers. Zainteresowanie dziełami Mikołaja Volckmara do pierwszej połowy XX wieku

Nicolaus Volckmar (16th/17th century) developed didactic books for learning Polish, including grammar, a dictionary and phrasebooks which serve as valuable sources for understanding the past (linguistic, social, etc.). The article outlines the initial phases of incorporating Volckmar into philological discourse. Various types of publications from before the mid-20th century were scrutinized in order to assess how contemporary authors utilized and evaluated Volckmar’s works. It was noted that Volckmar remained underrated for a long time, possibly due to criticisms from Grzegorz Knapski and Jan Wojna, echoed uncritically by later scholars, and due to a reluctance to acknowledge the German’s contribution to the development of the Polish language. This negative narrative persisted in textbooks on the history of the Polish language and lexicography. Władysław Pniewski’s publication was the first to cast Volckmar in a positive light, leading to increased interest in his legacy in detailed research.Nicolaus Volckmar (16th/17th century) developed didactic books for learning Polish, including grammar, a dictionary and phrasebooks which serve as valuable sources for understanding the past (linguistic, social, etc.). The article describes the medical vocabulary contained in the register of diseases included at the beginning of the Polish translation of Petrus de Crescentius’s handbook (1571; this material is also representative of an older version of the text from 1549). After an analysis of the origins of the register, the general semantic structure of the names that it contained was characterized and set in the context of 16th-century Polish, also against the background of Falimirz’s herbarium and other texts. An attempt was made to establish the reference of the names and classify them using the division proposed by Lucyna Jankowiak (2005) and Słownik Polszczyzny XVI wieku (Dictionary of 16th-century Polish). The analysis showed that most of the names are known to the Polish language of the time; there are, however, some new ones not recorded in the said dictionary. The core of the vocabulary extracted from the register are the names of diseases (among them, the names of diseases affecting the digestive system appeared most frequently, followed by the names of diseases of the skin, nervous and sensory organs, genitourinary and respiratory systems), but three other groups of names were also isolated. The article describes the medical vocabulary contained in the register of diseases included at the beginning of the Polish translation of Petrus de Crescentius’s handbook (1571; this material is also representative of an older version of the text from 1549). Verbum verbo reddere versus sensum sensui reddere, czyli leksykalna dyferencjacja znaczeń kontekstowych greckiego πάσχα we współczesnych translacjach nowotestamentowych (na tle polskiej tradycji przekładowej)

The analysis aims to indicate the methods of translating the cultureme expressed by the Greek lexeme πάσχα in selected contemporary New Testament renderings. The translators of the Catholic Biblia tyniecka (1971) used formal equivalence that is close to the verbum verbo reddere technique established thanks to the Bible edited by Jakub Wujek (1599). This translation technique also dominates in two later renderings of the Catholic circle, i.e. Biblia poznańska (1975) and Nowy Testament by Kazimierz Romaniuk (1975). However, the translators of the Evangelical Biblia warszawska (1975) as well as the translators of the Evangelical dynamic New Testament (1991) and the ecumenical rendering of the New Testament (2001) distinguished the contextual meanings of the Greek πάσχα, thus realizing the essence of the formula sensum sensui reddere, i.e. of dynamic equivalence. This technique was first used by Daniel Mikołajewski in the Gdańsk Bible (1632). The translators of the latest Catholic Biblia paulińska (2011) refer to this technique as well. This fact unquestionably supports the claim that the tendency to lexically differentiate the meanings of the Greekπάσχα in contemporary Polish renderings, the aim of which is to make the meaning of the biblical message accessible to contemporary recipients, is primarily of a philological rather than religious nature. The analysis aims to indicate the methods of translating the cultureme expressed by the Greek lexeme πάσχα in selected contemporary New Testament renderings. Full text link
The aim of the article is to demonstrate one of the fundamental characteristics of media discourse on video games: its syncretism. This pertains to the amalgamation of content and structures typical of several different spheres of human activity: entertainment, technology, culture, and business. A genre-based discourse analysis is employed to examine which genre patterns are typical of the media discourse on video games and the common methods of their manifestation. The paper discusses in greater detail four selected genres: video game review, news, overview, and a game publisher’s note. The research data was gathered from contemporary Polish-language media outlets specialised in gaming topics, as well as Polish online stores selling video games

Discourses Related to the Activities of Local Offices in the 16th—18th Centuries (The Case of Upper Silesia)

A method of discursive analysis of archival official texts offers a comprehensive view of historical material, much more in-depth than stylistic analyses. The subject of this description are Polish-language official records created in Upper Silesia between the 16th and 18th centuries, illustrating a certain stage of the formation of institutional legal discourse, present in the Polish communicative space since the Middle Ages. The surviving collections represent various types of discourse, determined by the intentions of the people approaching the office and by the role assumed by the institutional entity both in a specific event and in the formulation of a legal written document. The article outlines the two most common discourses in the collections studied: 1. the chancery discourse, that was aimed to produce documentation that would ensure the approaching parties the right to dispose of property in accordance with the established agreements and financial transaction; 2. the judicial discourse, that involved resolving disputes between community members and ensuring public order. The written forms documenting the actions of the court served a mainly informative and reporting function, and their role was extremely important in the current legal system, as they formed the basis for possible appeal proceedings.A method of discursive analysis of archival official texts offers a comprehensive view of historical material, much more in-depth than stylistic analyses. The authors of the article look at the loanwords introduced into the Polish vocabulary during the COVID-19 pandemic. The division of these loans according to the mechanism of taking a lexeme or word combination over into the Polish language is based on the work of Alicja Witalisz. The material comes from online texts published between 2020 and 2023. Verification of the collected neologisms and collocations (over 1 570 lexical units) in English dictionaries and in The Coronavirus Corpus and Monco PL corpora (in both cases, taking into account the dates of the first record) allowed us to assume with high probability that 441 loanwords (proper loanwords, structural-semantic calques, semantic calques) appeared in Polish texts during the pandemic, reflecting the thematic nominative network of that period. It turned out that the fields powered by anglicisms are mainly: DISEASES AND THEIR TREATMENT, FUNCTIONING OF THE STATE and LAW AND LAW-BREAKING. English borrowings also occur in many other fields (e.g. LAW and LAW-BREAKING, HUMAN LIFE\u27S IMMEDIATE ENVIRONMENT, RULES OF SOCIAL COEXISTENCE, BUSINESS, FREE TIME or HUMAN MENTAL STATES).The authors of the article look at the loanwords introduced into the Polish vocabulary during the COVID-19 pandemic.
