Revealing students’ social-emotional competence of the English education department

    No full text
Beyond equipping pedagogical competence, English Education students are increasingly expected to navigate diverse classroom environments, cultivating social and emotional competence (SEC) to confront cultural sensitivity in today’s 21st century. SEC is crucial for pre-service teachers as they prepare to educate future generations. Although extensive research has been carried out on SEC in foreign language learners, no study portrays English Education students’ SEC across programs. Through a quantitative survey research design, this study investigates the perceived levels of English Education students’ SEC and measures to what extent their levels vary according to their gender and education levels. A questionnaire survey of the social-emotional foreign language learning scale (SEFLLS) was distributed to the participants. Descriptive analyses (mean, standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Mann-Whitney U test) were conducted to analyze the data. The significant findings highlighted that English education students have high levels of overall social-emotional competence in both programs. Besides, findings indicated no significant difference based on participants’ gender in their SEC and dimensions. Similarly, no significant differences were found between participants’ education levels regarding their self-regulation and social relations. Yet, a significant difference was detected in the decision-making dimension and overall SEC. Subsequent studies could examine SEC factors across different cultures or socioeconomic levels in the context of language learning

Self-efficacy in four language skills of Indonesian L2 learners of English: A comparative survey study

    No full text
The self-efficacy (SE) of second or foreign language (L2) learners, or their belief in their ability to successfully carry out language tasks, can affect their communication behaviours and learning outcomes. This study seeks to explore L2 learners’ SE levels in listening, reading, writing, and speaking, and to determine whether there are significant differences in SE across these four skills. A survey method was used, involving 144 Indonesian L2 learners from non-English departments. The survey included Likert-scale items measuring SE in the four language skills. Descriptive statistics revealed that learners had moderate-to-high SE in reading, listening, and writing, while reporting a higher level of SE in speaking. The mean scores range from 3.2 to 4.6 on a 1-5 scale. Paired-sample t-tests showed that speaking SE was significantly greater than that of reading, listening, and writing, whilst no significant differences were found among the SE of the latter three skills. Based on these findings, it is recommended that teachers promote more balanced development across all four language skills in integrated-skill classes where teachers build learners’ confidence in skills they feel less capable of. Potential contributions include mapping learners’ perceived strengths and weaknesses in L2 learning

Male allyship contributing to women’s empowerment in Hidden Figures

    No full text
This study examined male allyship in Hidden Figures, focusing on how male characters support women’s empowerment in a racially and gender-biased workplace. Using the theory of male allyship proposed by Burrell & Morin (2025), it aimed to identify the forms of allyship and analyze their impact on women’s professional advancement. Employing qualitative content analysis, this research analyzed scenes that depict men’s supportive actions towards women facing structural discrimination. The findings revealed that male allyship took various forms, including fostering social capital through mentorship and sponsorship, confronting anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion (D.E.I) pushback with confidence and facts, leveraging resources to support development opportunities, clarifying that D.E.I did not promote unqualified candidates, positioning D.E.I as a competitive advantage, being visible advocates for inclusion, and sharing narratives that highlight the tangible benefits of D.E.I. These forms of allyship empowered women by creating opportunities, removing systemic barriers, and positioning diversity, equity, and inclusion as essential to organizational success. The study concluded that allyship grounded in fairness, respect, and integrity demonstrated that supporting women’s empowerment did not diminish masculinity or leadership credibility but instead strengthened collective achievement and built gender-inclusive environments

Building information modelling (BIM) utilization in architecture construction and engineering (ACE) companies in Indonesia is growing. BIM has been seen to have benefit in reducing cost and shortening building construction time. However, lack of BIM skilled workforce hamper BIM adoption in AEC companies in Indonesia. Therefore, questionnaire has been developed and distributed to student to measure perception about BIM course. Nineteen five-likert scale questions were developed to measure student perception about student computer skill background, benefit of BIM knowledge for future career, material quality, time allocated, and benefit of exam and assignment. The questionnaires were distributed to two group of student that are student worker and regular student. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Welch's t-test to compare the perceptions of the two groups. The study found no significant difference in perceptions between student workers and regular students. These insights can help refine the BIM curriculum to better align with industry requirements. The groups were selected whether the student workers had different perception about the course compare to regular student

The rapid advancements in technology and the demands of Industry 4.0 have underscored the need for innovative teaching approaches in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to enhance students' practical competencies. This study evaluates the effectiveness of module-based and video learning in improving students' competencies in tapered turning within a lathe machining practice course. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the study involved 41 students from a Mechanical Engineering Education program, divided into an experimental group (19 students) and a control group (22 students). The experimental group used module-based and video learning tools, while the control group relied on traditional teaching methods. The findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in the experimental group's post-test scores compared to the control group (ð‘¡ = 8.59, ð‘ < 0.05), with a mean difference of 14.467. The experimental group also achieved an average normalized gain (N-Gain) score of 0.7063, categorized as "high," indicating a substantial improvement in learning outcomes. The study demonstrates that the integration of module-based and video learning enhances both cognitive understanding and practical skills, making the learning process more interactive, accessible, and aligned with industry needs. These findings highlight the potential of multimedia-based teaching tools to bridge the gap between traditional methods and modern educational requirements, contributing to the development of industry-ready graduates in the era of Industry 4.0

Three types of houses are analyzed: heritage houses, residential houses, and heritage-permanent houses. The study identifies changes in space expansion, zoning, spatial elements, and functions. The most significant spatial expansion occurs in heritage houses, including the addition of three kitchen and bathroom spaces, a living room, a sleeping room, a homestay bedroom, and a warehouse. Spatial zoning transformation in heritage houses involves substantial changes in public, semi-public, and private zones, often resulting in mixed-use spaces within a single building. The addition of furniture elements is prevalent in ten houses that serve as research objects, particularly in homestay bedrooms. The spaces that have changed include bedrooms, family rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. This study provides a detailed account of the physical transformations in residential houses converted into homestays in Gampong Nusa, Aceh Besar, contributing valuable insights into the adaptation process and its implications for tourism amenities
