Multimedia system for integrated reading acceleration and assistance (SMAART) in literacy learning in high school
This study aimed to develop the Multimedia System for Accelerated and Assisted Integrated Reading (SMAART), an interactive learning application specifically designed to support high school students with literacy disabilities. Utilizing the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model, the study only reached the development stage. This study followed a systematic development process to ensure the application's pedagogical and technical effectiveness. The analysis phase identified key literacy challenges through teacher interviews and student observations, while the design phase incorporated multimedia principles to create an engaging and accessible interface. During development, the application was built using Articulate Storyline 3, integrating text, audio, and visual elements to accommodate diverse learning needs. Expert validation was conducted with media specialists (assessing usability and design) and literacy educators (evaluating content relevance), resulting in high scores for display quality (4.6/5) and instructional effectiveness (4.4/5). User feedback highlighted the application's intuitive navigation (89% satisfaction rate), interactive exercises, and motivational multimedia components. The evaluation phase confirmed the effectiveness of SMAART as a complementary tool for literacy education, especially for students with learning disabilities. Its success underscores the potential of adaptive multimedia technology to promote inclusive education. Future research could expand testing to broader demographics and explore AI-based personalization. Ultimately, SMAART offers a scalable model for digital literacy interventions, aligning with the School Literacy Movement (GLS) initiative in Indonesia and addressing the gap in accessible learning resources for students with disabilities
Rational emotive behavior therapy for psychological well-being in adolescents with cerebral visual impairment in Saudi Arabia
Adolescents with Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) face heightened risks to psychological well-being due to social barriers, reduced independence, and negative self-perception. This study investigated the efficacy of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) in enhancing psychological well-being among this population in Saudi Arabia. A quasi-experimental design with pre-test, post-test, and follow-up assessments was employed. Thirty adolescents (aged 16–18; 15 males, 15 females) with CVI and documented well-being deficits from Al Noor Institute for the Blind, Buraidah, were purposively sampled. Participants were divided into experimental (REBT intervention) and control groups (n = 15 each). The intervention comprised 27 REBT sessions delivered thrice weekly, targeting cognitive restructuring, emotional regulation, and behavioral skills (e.g., relaxation, assertiveness). Psychological well-being was measured using a researcher-adapted version of Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scales (PWB). Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests analyzed between-group and within-group differences, respectively. Post-test results revealed statistically significant improvements (p < .001) across all PWB dimensions (self-acceptance, positive relations, autonomy, environmental mastery, purpose in life, personal growth) for the experimental group versus controls, with large effect sizes (r = 1.0). Within-group analysis confirmed significant pre-post gains (p = .001) in all dimensions. Follow-up assessments (vs. post-test) showed no significant decline (p > .05) in well-being scores, indicating sustained intervention effects. The REBT program effectively enhanced psychological well-being in adolescents with CVI, with benefits persisting post-intervention. Findings support REBT’s applicability in mitigating cognitive and emotional challenges specific to visual impairment. Integration of REBT into support frameworks for visually impaired adolescents in educational and therapeutic settings is recommended. Future research should validate these outcomes in larger cohorts and explore long-term impacts on academic and social functioning
Linguistic construction of the expression 'Penantian' in Didi Kempot's lyrics: A semantic pragmatic analysis
This study explores the linguistic construction of the expressive speech act of penantian (waiting) in Didi Kempot's song lyrics by employing a descriptive qualitative method with a pragmatic-semantic framework, drawing from Searle’s theory of speech acts and Cruse’s lexical semantics. The analysis was conducted on a corpus of six popular songs selected purposively based on the dominance of penantian themes. Each lyric was examined in terms of its expressive act, contextual meaning, and cultural-symbolic references. This phenomenon of penantian, often associated with deep emotions such as sadness, longing, and resignation, reflects Didi Kempot’s strong identity as Indonesia’s “Godfather of Broken Heart.” The findings reveal eleven expressive variants of penantian (e.g., hope, longing, grief) and seven context-based meanings (e.g., longing for reunion, emotional endurance, betrayal of promises). Furthermore, linguistic representations are constructed through culturally loaded temporal (e.g., "a year," "the third season") and spatial symbols (e.g., "Stasiun Balapan," "Nickerie"), which—when interpreted through a cultural semiotic perspective—highlight the embodiment of time and space in Javanese emotional expression. Using figures of speech such as hyperbole, personification, and metaphor further enhances the dramatic expression of penantian. These findings demonstrate how Didi Kempot utilizes culturally resonant language to articulate the intricate emotional landscape of waiting, betrayal (cidra), and heartbreak (ambyar), thus contributing to the study of pragmatics and semantics within a culturally contextualized framework of regional music
The development of soft skills is essential for university students to prepare for the workforce, one of which can be achieved through participation in student organizations with distinctive organizational cultures. This study aims to describe and analyze the organizational culture of UKMF JM Al-Ishlah FISHIPOL UNY and its sociological roles. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model. The findings reveal that Al-Ishlah’s organizational culture includes six core values: Islamic orientation, familial relations, cooperation, tolerance, proselytization, and mentoring. These values reflect the Clan Culture model within the Competing Values Framework (CVF) by Cameron and Quinn. Although differing from Weber’s rigid bureaucracy, the organization still exhibits bureaucratic elements such as formal structures and planned supervision. The organizational culture functions as a marker of collective identity, behavioral guide, internal cohesion, and a means for capacity development and problem-solving
This study explores efforts to build elderly independence through a symbolic interactionist approach at Widhi Asih Elderly Home in Surakarta. Elderly residents in the facility face various limitations physical, psychological, social, and spiritual that affect their autonomy. Using a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews and observation, the research reveals that the meaning of independence is not solely rooted in individual conditions but constructed through social interactions and positive symbolic exchanges within the institutional setting. Factors such as personal motivation, family support, and the social climate of the home contribute to reestablishing a sense of agency among the elderly. Institutional strategies including regular physical activities, strengthened social relationships, and spiritual engagement facilitate this process. As a result, residents experience an improved quality of life through the reinforcement of social identity and a sense of self-worth as active members of the community
This article examines how widespread urine testing in public institutions functions not merely as an administrative procedure, but also as a hidden mechanism of social control. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and passive observation during an internship at the Sidoarjo BNN office, the study explores how urine testing is embedded in bureaucratic contexts such as job recruitment, education, and contract extension. The findings reveal that this practice serves not only for drug detection but also as a tool for bodily surveillance and moral regulation. It promotes compliance, enforces moral standards, and creates social categories such as "clean" and "at-risk" individuals. In bureaucratic practice, power is institutionalized subtly through seemingly neutral administrative rules. This article contributes to the sociology of power by highlighting how everyday bureaucratic routines can function as instruments for reproducing dominant and politically charged values

Doctor-Patient Communication in Tanzanian Public Hospitals: Language Use, Code-Switching, and Accommodation Strategies
This study examined how language use and communication strategies influence doctor-patient interactions in Tanzanian public hospitals. Guided by Communication Accommodation Theory, the study focused on Amana, Mwananyamala, and Temeke Regional Referral Hospitals. Using a phenomenological qualitative design, data were collected through observations, interviews, and document reviews from 90 participants (30 doctors, 30 nurses, and 30 patients). Data were analyzed using NVivo 12 software, enabling thematic coding and sentiment analysis. Findings revealed that Swahili was the dominant language, but code-switching with English was common, particularly for technical terms. While simplification, analogies, non-verbal cues, and occasional third-party interpretation improved understanding, excessive or unexplained English terms led to confusion especially among elderly or less-educated patients. Cultural and linguistic mismatches further hindered communication when doctors failed to adapt to patients' backgrounds. The study recommends Swahili communication training, standardized bilingual materials, and integration of communication skills into medical education. These findings contribute to efforts toward linguistically inclusive and culturally responsive healthcare in Tanzania.

The Integration of Spatial Layouts in the Abdi Dalem Houses in Jeron Beteng, Keraton District, Yogyakarta
The abdi dalem house is a residence built and provided for the royal servants of the Yogyakarta Palace, featuring the traditional Javanese spatial configuration spread throughout the Jeron Beteng area. In recent times, the Jeron Beteng area has undergone significant transformations in response to modern developments, leading to the flexible reconfiguration of spaces to meet contemporary needs. This study aims to examine the evolving spatial patterns in the residences of abdi dalem in the present day. This holds significant importance in understanding the reflections of Javanese vernacular transformation.. The study focuses on two abdi dalem houses in the Panembahan district, known for preserving the original condition of these traditional homes. This qualitative research employs a case study approach, with data collection conducted through purposive sampling, observations, and interviews. Photographic documentation and floor plan sketches were utilized to strengthen the data, alongside literature reviews focusing on cultural, ritual, and traditional aspects of Javanese houses. The study uses two abdi dalem houses that still retain their original façade as case studies. The analysis of spatial integration is performed qualitatively, covering variables such as socio-cultural aspects, spatial layout, building orientation, building functions, land transformation, zoning, spatial circulation, and the integration of spatial patterns. The findings reveal that the integration of spatial patterns in abdi dalem houses for modern-day flexibility is influenced by the evolution of time and the growth of family members. This adaptation occurs without compromising the architectural heritage values of the house, though it does result in changes to the spatial patterns
