    CORRECTIONAL CENTERS AND INMATE\u27S ENTREPRENEURSHIP TRAINING IN NIGERIA: BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES

    In Nigeria, prison does not only help to keep offenders from the society, it ensures thepath to their reformation by improving on their potentials and subsequent change untobetter social functioning. It is also evident that training program in entrepreneurial skillsexists in most Nigerian prisons as part of the rehabilitation programme. Thus, thisresearch aims to validate factors affecting inmate\u27s entrepreneurship training in Nigerianprisons. This paper attempts to assess the path take by the Nigerian government towardsinmate\u27s entrepreneurial training. The study used secondary data such as scholarlyarticles, journals, text book, official documents. The study identified managerial andsocial factors that can enhance the operations of entrepreneurial training programme inNigerians correctional centres and consequently rehabilitate the prisoners on discharge.The paper also revealed that inmate\u27s entrepreneurship training miracle in other countriesis an engine for job creation. It is therefore, recommended that Government (policymakers) should genuinely recognize the essence of inmate\u27s entrepreneurship toeconomic development by initiating and sustaining policies that will help enhanceinmate\u27s entrepreneurial development in Nigeria. Hence, Nigerian prison service willhave better understanding of the rehabilitation needs of the prisoners/inmates

    COVID-19 has wrecked global but significant havoc and distress on virtually all aspectof human endeavor ranging from social, political, economical to religious, cultural andeven family bound. Apart from the evident physical symptoms in infected cases, it hascaused serious damages to academic activities which by extension severely affectedlecturers\u27 performance. Nigeria, like other countries, implemented a nationwide lockdownto contain and curb the transmission of the virus. The study attempt to explore the effectsof depression, anxiety and stress on tertiary institutions lecturer\u27s research performancein north eastern Nigeria during the lockdown. In line with thatan online survey, measuringdepression, anxiety, and stress and research performance was administered usingGoogle forms. A total of 123 valid responses were received and consideredfor analysis.Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling 3 was used in assessing the model. Theresults revealed that anxiety cause by the lockdown has adversely affectedtertiaryinstitutions lecturers\u27 research performance. Surprisingly no such kind of relationship wasfound between depression and stress on lecturers research performance. Thus, the studyrecommends precautionary measures to be taken in case of future lockdown that mayoccur

    Google drive is a sophisticated learning tool that facilitate similitude and collaboratedlearning among tertiary institution students. This research attempt to investigate theusage of the platform among university students in the north-east Nigeria. The study usedhad survey research design to solicit information form the targeted responded of 263undergraduate students that serve as sample. Data collected was analyzed using Meanand standard deviation statistical tools to answer the research questions,. The result of thestudy reveals that students used Google Drive for assignments/collaborative learning.Based on the outcome of the study, it was concluded that Google Drive platform provideundergraduate business education students with opportunities to enhance and assesscurrent educational information. It was recommended that lecturers and all stakeholderswho handle business education courses should be encourage to adopt the use of GoogleDrive as a learning platform for assignment/group work, The business educationstudents should utilize and exploit maximally the opportunities provided by the use ofGoogle Drive as a learning platform for learning activities among others. Usefulsuggestions for further research were equally made

    This paper examined the trend of violent extremism in Northern Nigeria amidstCOVID-19 Pandemic. The region has been witnessing various forms of insecurity whichhave resulted to loss of lives and property. The paper uses frustration aggressiontheory and structural theory of social conflict which posited that aggression is aproduct of frustration. The study adopts secondary sources of data collection. It alsoadopts content analysis and logical inference as a statistical tool for analysis. Theresearch discovered that the administrative lacuna and lack of good governanceleading to their inability to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people hencethe insecurity. The violent extremism is a result of the inability of the government andits apparatus to do the needful in respect of the groups\u27 activities was responsible forthe violent extremism and not the religion or those that practice same. Ineffectivemonitoring system of religious activities, bad governance, unemployment, poverty,corruption and others are responsible for the violent extremism in Northern Nigeria.Thus, their activities has affected the socio-economic development of Nigeria,particularly the northern part leading to food scarcity and high cost of food, scaredaway foreign and local investors, increased school drop outs among others. Therefore,there is the need to review the operationalisation of the religious institutions inNigeria, the level of poverty and unemployment be reduced to the barest minimumthrough massive jobs creation among other recommendations

    PROVISION OF ICT FACILITIES FOR TRAINING, USE AND JOB PERFORMANCE IN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN NORTHERN NIGERIA

    The study investigated the types of ICT facilities available for training, use and job performance in university libraries in North West Nigeria. Two specific objectives and null hypothesis were formulated on significant influence of ICT training and use on job performance among library personnel in the studied universities. Conceptual model containing the independent and dependent variables was developed by the researchers. Population of the study consisted of 1,327 library personnel (454 librarians and 873 library officers) in 18-fully operational universities in North West Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to adopt 169 library personnel (74 librarians and 95 library officers) in seven randomly selected universities in the geo-political zone. Checklist and structured questionnaire were the data collection instruments validated, and pre-tested, and reliability coefficient of 0.74 was obtained. Frequency counts and inferential statistics (Pearson\u27s chi square) were used to analyze collected data. Out of 169 copies of questionnaire administered, 145 (86 %) completed copies were returned and usable. Results showed the availability of photocopiers, computers, CD-ROMs, Printers, diskettes, Local Area Network, Online Public Access Catalogue and Internet facilities in university libraries. ICT facilities are mostly applied in the area of cataloging of library collection. There was significant influence of ICT training and use on job performance among library personnel. The study concluded that the high level of job performance of library personnel increases with the availability and use of ICT facilities. The study recommends that the management of university libraries in the North West Nigeria should make provision for more ICT facilities for training for library personnel to effectively and efficiently perform jobs

    Discussions on the 19th Century Sokoto Jihad and Its Impact on the Down Fall of Habe Rulers in Daura-1806-1906

    This work among other things examines the pre-Jihad Daura traditional affairs. It highlights the origin and development of the town of Daura and how it led to the establishment of Hausa states. It also explains the emergence of Abduddar and the killing of sarki (snake) that prohibited people from getting water in the well except on Fridays, by Bayajidda and the marriage between him and the queen Daurama. This paper also highlights on traditional Habe rulers of Daura (HAUSA) that ruled for 99 years before the Jihad of Usman Danfodio. This work also enumerates the structure of Fulani system of Administration in Daura, explains how Socioeconomic and political activities were changed after the Jihad. The issue of excessive tax, confiscation of Fulani properties and other forms of oppressions done by the Habe rulers were suppressed during the Fulani reign in Daura. The paper also examines the nine Fulani rulers so far and their pattern of administration that lasted for one hundred years after which the power restored back to Hausa (HABE) ruling class by the British colonial Masters in 1906. The paper also highlights on the emergence ofthree different Daura kings at the same time in different places. That is, Sarkin Daura at Daura, Sarkin Daura at Zango (present Zango Daura) and Sarkin Daura at Baure. The paper also examines the establishment of Malam Musa Sarkin Daura-Zango as the new Sarkin Daura and the unification of Daura, Daura-Zango, and Daura-Baure under one Sarki by the British colonial masters in 1906

    Analysis of the Impact of Covid-19 Pandemic on Gender Based Violence: Case Study of Rape Victims in Nigeria

    The first confirmed case of Covid-19 “Corona virus” in Nigeria was announced in February 2020, when an Italian citizen tested positive for the virus in Lagos State. In other to curtail further spread of the virus, a moment of total and partial lockdown in affected States, was declared, thus affecting the economic, religious and socio-cultural setup. A careful study of the unfolding lockdown has sparked a surge in human insecurity, crime-related offences of human against fellow beings. One of such crimesis rape, men having carnal knowledge of females without their consent. In some instance, the victims were either brutalised, tortured, defiled, murdered or commit suicide. A compiled report from National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NATIP) and the Nigerian Police had documented over 717 cases of rape and about 799 suspects arrested from March to July 2020 (Premium Times, July 14, 2020). This has been the highest reported incidences of rape within the shorter time frame. Theworst fear of the reported incidence involved minors and underage age girls. This has created state of worries in the mind of many and could not be dismiss with just wave of hand. The study examines prevalence of rape and the victims in Nigeria and profound recommendations that seek to address the plaque. The study is a content review analysis of selected national dailies, thus qualitative method has been adopted in substantially rendering facts. As widely pronounced in the country, rape is a pandemic of monumental consequences and must be addressed the way Covid-19 is treated though the problem had been with us long before the global pandemic

    The Evolution of the Civil-Military Relations in the Boko Haram War Zone in Borno State

    There were indiscriminate killings of civilians by both Boko Haram and the security operatives in Maiduguri and the general public were confused as the military killed more innocent persons than the Boko Haram insurgents. This article seeks to examine the Evolution of the Civil- Military relations in the Boko Haram war zone in Borno state. An analytical method of research is adopted using primary and secondary data sources through oral interviews, reports from multi-national organizations and books. The concepts of guerrilla and asymmetric warfare were used to establish the relation between a standing army and an insurgency.The article reveal that the synergy of the civil-military relations has brought back relative peace in the state capital and this strategy should be maintained in any future reoccurrence anywhere in the country for sustainable development

    Assessing the Use of Pictorial Simulations in Teaching Social Studies in Chanchaga Local Government Primary Schools of Niger State, Nigeria

    The study assessed the effective use of instructional materials in the teaching of social studies. The Pre-test - Post-test Experimental - Control Group design was adopted for the purpose of data collection. One instrument, “Culture and Identity Test” (CIT) designed by the researcher and validated by seasoned educationist were use for data collection. Two hundred students randomly selected from four primary schools in Chanchaga Local Government Area of Niger State were used for the study. The pupils were assigned into two groups the experimental and control groups. The experimental group were taught with pictorialsimulations while the control group were taught without the use of pictorial simulations. Both groups were pre-tested before being taught the concept of ‘Culture and Identity’. A post-test was given to the two groups after four weeks of teaching. The test was appropriately scored. The data obtained were analyzed using group mean, standard deviation and t-Test Statistic to test the two study hypotheses. The findings showed that the use of pictorial simulations in teaching social studies greatly improved the performance of pupils in the subject. It was therefore recommended among others that, teachers should use pictorial simulationsin teaching pupils to make instruction effective

    Role of Indigenous Yoruba Music in the Cultural Development of Ilorin

    music serves the purpose of entertainment, education, enlightenment, warning, chastisement and praises. The indigenous music has remained a veritable instrument of socialization among the Yoruba since the precolonial period. The study attempts to explore the role of indigenous music in the cultural development of Ilorin. The study adopted a historical research method, comprising the use of oral interviews as primary source, and relevant written materials as secondary sources. Ilorin is a heterogeneous community with a majority Yoruba, and a mixed Hausa, Fulani, Nupe, Bariba, Kanuri and Gobir population. Indigenous music plays formidable roles in the preservation of culture and tradition among the diverse groups. There are several Yoruba indigenous music forms in the city. These include Dadakuada, Balu, Waka, Were, Agbe, Senwele, Kengbe and Fuji. The Islamic influence has been quite visible in the various music compositions because the religion is a strong unifying force among the various people. In addition to entertainment, Ilorin indigenous musicians use their composition give contents on the genealogy of their client, which makes the music a dependable source of oral history. The Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union has been a strong support in the sustenance of the culture of traditional music in the Ilorin emirate. The study discovered a strong influence of Islamic religion on the composition and deliverance of the Indigenous music in Ilorin. In spite of the external influence of foreign religions, European colonialism and the eroding impact of Western civilisation, the indigenous music has remained alive among Ilorin people
