URBAN REALITIES IN TENDAI HUCHU’S THE HAIR DRESSER OF HARARE

    No full text
Urban life and experiences have diversely occupied the context of African literary creativity. The delineation of experiences into thematic thrusts draws a great deal from veracities caused by urbanisation. The city has always remained and occupied the central position in literary thought and creativity. This generally implies that most expression of experiences by many African writers continue to draw their creative imagination from metropolitan environment(s) and experience. Thus, such realities like the dearth of basic infrastructure, the despicable housing structures all provide a glimpse to the complicated dynamics of urban life as represented in African fictions. Using Realism as a theoretical framework, this paper examines the mysteries of city life in The Hair Dresser of Harare to expound how Tendai Huchu represents typically, the social life of multi-cultural codes, relationships, fashionmongers, etcetera, co-exist. The paper also takes a look at a detailed appraisal of the economic life of the city to decipher how the juxtaposed civic life and financial system of the city thrives, and how this afflux works side by side with political activities and the life of politicians in urban areas. The conviction in this evaluation is that the social, economic and political spectrum of Africa’s phenomenology is critically depicted in fiction to allow for an introspective acknowledgement of Africa’s quandary realistically as symbolised in African novels

The Emergence of Ex-Servicemen’s Welfare Associations in Nigeria after the Second World War

    No full text
The outbreaks of the First and Second World Wars forced the British colonialgovernment to recruit and conscript colonial subjects in large numbers to fight for thesurvival of the British Empire in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. After the wars, thedemobilized ex-servicemen started to seek a change of attitude from the colonialgovernment because of the new experiences they had acquired during their militaryservices outside Nigeria. One of the significant outcomes of the wars was the eventualproliferation of Ex-servicemen welfare associations throughout the country. Thedemobilized soldiers started organizing themselves into associations to address theirwelfare issues because the colonial government failed to provide jobs for the majorityof them. This paper argues that the emergence and proliferation of ex-servicemen’swelfare association in Nigeria was due to the failure of the colonial government toresettle and rehabilitate the ex-soldiers into meaningful civil life despite theircontributions to the survival of the British Empire

Federalism, Insecurity and Community Policing In Nigeria

    No full text
There is a crisis in how federal arrangements could be used to solve the challenges ofinsecurity in Nigeria. Community policing is being presented as a viable option forresolving this challenge. But there are fears in certain quarters that these regionalcomplimentary security outfits could be converted to ethnic militias thereby posing agreater threat than the ones experienced at present. The essence of centrally controlledsecurity apparatus and the helpless situation experienced by governors and regionalgrouping of administrative heads of the second tier of governance which pushed them tosuggest alternative or complementary security outfits is the central focus of this paper. The paper is preoccupied with theoretical issues on federalism, community policing as astrategy for addressing challenges of insecurity, and the threats and challenges ofadopting regional security outfits in Nigeria. This article in five parts has an introduction,a review of literature on theoretical issues on community policing via regional securityoutfits, the consequences of degeneration into ethnic militias and the prospects ofcomplimenting the central control of security apparatus in Nigeria, and theconclusion/recommendations. Secondary data were generated and analysed in themes. The study concludes that the use of alternative security outfits as community policinginfrastructure could serve as a vehicle for managing Nigeria’s insecurity challenges likeinsurgency, kidnapping, cattle rustling and armed banditry. The paper recommends thatthe central government has to put legislation in place to accept regional security outfitsas community policing infrastructure and should work out a partnership that would ensurevigilance among members of communities and reinforce conflict resolution mechanism. This will address grievances that could be explored by criminal elements in the name ofagitation for regional autonomy or perpetration of criminal activities
