Friend or Foe: The Executive and the Legislature in Muhammadu Buhari Administration, 2015-2019

    No full text
This paper investigates the relationship between the Executive and the Legislature in theregime of President Muhammadu Buhari Administration from 2015 to 2019. These twoarms of government are the two pedals that wheel every developed democracy to its desireddestination. Looking at the salient power struggle that manifests in the process of theElectoral Act amendment, the anti-corruption war and the late passage of appropriationbills, among other issues, it is evident that the executive and the legislature have not workedin harmony to move the nation forward as envisaged during the swearing in of the executiveand inauguration of the seventh assembly in 2015. This has led to the disempowerment ofthe electorates and a high level of intolerance among citizens. Although conflict preventionmeasures are being taken by elder statesmen to douse tension between candidates, if thereis no harmony between the two arms of government, the forthcoming general elections arelikely to be violence-ridden because followers would likely use the discordant tunes sangby their principals to cause mayhem during or after the elections. The theoretical frameworkadopted is the doctrine of separation of power and elite theory. Secondary data is reliedupon for evidence of power struggles among groups and a qualitative method is used toanalyse the data. This paper argues that mechanisms must be put in place to check theoverriding interests of groups that would always want to dominate political parties. Theinterest of the common people in the subsequent General Elections should be a priority todifferent arms of government for a sustainable democracy

    No full text
This study examines the impact of the 5Es instructional model and reflective discussion instructional strategy on the secondary students’ attitude towards algebra in Niger State. Three research questions were raised and three corresponding null hypotheses were tested at a 0.05 significant level. The study adopted a quasi-experimental design. A sample of 349 students from nine intact classes served as subjects in this study. Multi-stage sampling method was employed to select nine secondary schools for the research. The instrument for data collection was an attitude towards Algebra (ATAI), a thirty-item inventory test with a reliability coefficient (r) of 0.853. the results were analyzed using the ANOVA test, hypothesis one was rejected indicating that there was a significant difference in attitude towards students taught using the 5Es instructional model (Exp.1), reflective discussion instructional strategy (Exp.2) and those taught using the lecture method (contr). Scheffe post hoc test was performed and mean gain was calculated, all in favour of the two experimental groups. Hypothesis two and three were retained indicating that the treatment for Exp.1 and Exp.2 favoured students of different ability levels. It was recommended among others that teachers should employ 5Es instructional model and reflective discussion instructional strategy in teaching algebra to improve students\u27 attitude towards algebra

    No full text
Herbicide (paraquat dichloride) application during agricultural activity has been found to have negative consequences for humans and the environment. The soils collected from FUTO Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria were subjected to comparative investigations and analyses. A modeling approach was created in this article to mimic the pollutant (paraquat dichloride) migration process through a sandyloam soil. The two-site parallel inter-phase model is used in this approach to simulate the soil transport process. A soil auger was used to collect soil samples at a specific location. For the experiment, a 40cm x 10cm soil column was utilized with a determined amount of.50ml of 0.5mol/L paraquat dichloride solution. The samples were divided into two categories: uncontaminated and contaminated. According to the findings, contaminated soil had the highest TOC (1.84), low conductivity (70NS/cm), low porosity (46%), and PH value (4.8), while uncontaminated soil had the lowest TOC (1.04), high conductivity (2000NS/cm), high porosity (48%), and PH value (4.8). As time passes, the effluent concentration in the soil column experiment decreases (0.0117mol/l –0.0115mol/l) and reaches equilibrium (0.113mol/l – 0.113mol/l) between 15 and 20 minutes. The model results in this study are similar to the experimental results

Class Room Communication: Challenges of Primary School Teachers in Adoption of Translingualism

    No full text
A significant percentage of Nigerian students start and sometimes complete primary school using a foreign language, while others start using the language of their immediate communities or continue their primary education exclusively in English. It is important to analyze those dimensions that contradict the National Policy on Education (NPE) language policy provision, asthese could cause potential damage to teaching and learning. Therefore, the study examined the existence and types of challenges to adopting translingualism in Nigeria by primary school teachers of Bichi Local Government Area in Kano. The study adopted a survey research design and multi-stage sampling (simple random and accidental) in distributing questionnaires to asample size of 292 participants. Data collected were analyzed using a simple percentage score. Findings revealed, among others, that; there existed twelve challenges to translingualism which are both internal and external in nature. Of these twelve challenges, learners’ attitude to language use, inadequate motivation of language teachers, and inadequate teaching staff are the major forms of challenges to adoption of translingualism. Given the findings, this study recommended that there should be regular sensitization on language policy as stipulated in NPE by the relevant bodies and that there should be more collaboration among the three tiers of government in enforcing NPE language policy provisions in primary education

This study investigates the determinants of private investment in Nigeria. Employing time series data for the period 1990 to 2020 gotten from the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin and World Development Indicators, the Auto-Regressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL) and the Error Correction Mechanism estimation techniques were used to test private investment as the dependent variable and interest rate, money supply, credit to the private sector, inflation rate, and regulatory quality index as the independent variables. The results showed that all variables were correctly signed, and had statistical significance in explaining private investment in Nigeria during the period of study. The study, therefore, encouraged low interest rates to support and enhance lending to the private sector needed for investments, a control of rising inflation rate, monetary authorities developing and implementing policies to increase credit allocated to the private sector, creating and implementing sound policies and laws to support and encourage private sector development as recommendations

Deviance, as a behaviour negates social norms, it is an inevitable feature of social life. Its manifestation is in various forms demonstrates its inevitability in any social interaction. Antisocial behaviour, a variant of deviance, has assumed alarming rates in Nigeria. The phenomenon is more worrisome in the institutions of higher learning. The incremental trend in antisocial behaviour among youths permeates virtually all institutions of higher learning in Nigeria. The doggedness of the syndrome has allowed its undue persistence leading to massive destruction of the moral fabric of society. In fact, the syndrome threatens to redefine the existential essence of tertiary institutions in the country, if left unchecked. Studies connect the phenomenon of antisocial behaviours to peer group influence, psychological problems, broken relationships, family backgrounds and poverty, academic frustration, pressure, search for identity, experimentation and so on. This diversity in causations proves the ubiquitous nature of the syndrome and calls for a holistic approach in tackling the problem. To achieve this, researchers must first understand the nature of the causes of antisocial behavior, its patterns and specific consequences on the individual, their group and the society at large. This informs the need for this research. The study focuses on antisocial behaviours among students of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) Lapai, Niger State. The study seeks to unravel the causes, patterns and consequences of the rising antisocial behaviours on the institution and the society at large. The findings of the study shall be utilized to guide policy directions of the University towards minimizing and subsequently eradicating the menace in the University. A survey research design was adopted for the study and respondents were drawn from amongst students, parents, and staff of IBBU Lapai. Both quantitative and qualitative data analysis were conducted using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and Nvivo respectively. In the quantitative analysis, descriptive statistical tools such as simple percentages, frequency distribution table and charts were used to present the data. Similarly, thematic analysis was employed to analyze the qualitative data. The results from the study helped in understanding the real causes of anti-social behaviour in the University, the trend or pattern of the antisocial behaviour, and the consequences of such antisocial behaviours on the institution and the society at large
