The Impact of Public Domestic Borrowing on Private Sector Investments in Kenya

    No full text
In recent there has been rapid increase in uptake of domestic debt by the government of Kenya. The purpose of this study was to establish the Impact of Public Domestic Debt on Private Investments in Kenya. The independent variable was public domestic debt while the dependent variable was private investment. Secondary data on Public domestic debt data and private investment was collected from Central Bank of Kenya. The secondary data was for the periods 1999 to 2021. Private investment was operationalised using Gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) and the study applied Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) econometric model.  The study found out that the long-term analysis indicated sustained public domestic borrowing had a negative influence on GFCF, revealing a crowding-out effect. This implied that over time, persistent government debt led to reduced private sector investment

    No full text
This study explores the effect of service quality on customer loyalty. The study explicitly focuses on four banks: Access Bank, UBA, First Bank Nigeria Plc, and Unity Bank. The study used the Behavior Modification Perspective (BMP) as the theory that underpins this study. The survey research design was adopted for this study. The quantitative data was gathered from a sample of 384 customers of the four selected banks. Ninety-six respondents were sampled from each of the four banks. The study used frequency count, simple percentages to describe the data and linear regression for the hypothesis testing. The findings revealed a significant relationship between service quality and customer loyalty in some selected banks in Jigawa State and that service quality significantly affects customer loyalty. Based on these insights, it is recommended that banks in Jigawa State improve the quality of their services provided to enhance customer satisfaction and retain their trust. They should allocate more of their resources and attention towards bolstering service quality

The Role of Bank of Agriculture in Fostering Agricultural Development in Nigeria

    No full text
This research work examines the role Bank of Agriculture Limited plays in fostering agricultural development in Nigeria. Primary data was obtained by distributing 120 questionnaires to farmers who benefitted from the Bank’s credit facility, linear regression analysis was employed and the result reveals that credit advance contributes 24.13% in increasing farmers’ output which translates to agricultural development. It was therefore recommended that the government should firstly invest in the agricultural sector by making provisional allocations in the annual budget for the Bank; secondly, the Bank should streamline the loan application, processing and approval procedure to ease access to credit; thirdly, enact policy that will mandate civil servants to have personal account with the Bank to help raise the liquidity position of the Bank; and lastly, direct the Central Bank to issue all financial transaction licenses to the Bank including such that would enable the Bank deal in foreign exchange transactions

Impact of N-Power Scheme on Poverty Reduction in Bida Local Government Area of Niger State (2016 – 2020)

    No full text
Over the years, poverty rate in Nigeria has surged beyond considerable point in spite of different interventions and poverty reduction strategies. It is against this background that this study examined the effectuality of the N-Power programme, a youth empowerment and poverty reduction program among its beneficiaries in Bida Local Government Area of Niger State, Nigeria. The study adopts human capital theory. Data were qualitatively and quantitatively collected using 320 questionnaires from a population of 1598. Out of the 320-instrument distributed, only 285 was returned and used for analysis. The purposive sampling technique was used in selecting the samples from the study area. Data collected from the field were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study reveals that most of the disengaged beneficiaries of the N-Power programme affirmed that the programme did not contribute to poverty reduction in their lives. As such, poverty and unemployment are still prevalent as majority of the N-Power beneficiaries were not adequately equipped with financial remuneration and necessary skills to develop capacity. The study suggests that subsequent poverty reduction programmes should provide fair remunerations that reflects prevailing cost of living. The study further recommended that State and Locals governments on their parts should establish sustainable anti-poverty schemes similar to the N-Power scheme in their various states and local government areas in tandem with the Federal Government anti-poverty programmes

DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE AND PRESSURE GROUPS IN NIGERIA: AN ASSESSMENT OF #ENDSARS PROTEST

    No full text
In October 2020, Nigeria experienced a nationwide protest tagged: #ENDSARS. These protests were targeted at the government to enforce the end of police brutality, undue harassment and extortion meted against the masses, especially the Nigerian youths. Protests were carried out in some parts of the country, especially the major cities and abroad. Many scholars and commentators believe that these protests were facilitated by social media. The study however, is an attempt to critically examine the impact of #ENDSARS protest on democratic governance. To do this, the study relied on both primary and secondary sources of data, and survey method of analysis was adopted. Descriptive statistics such as simple percentage and frequency table were used to provide answers to the research question, the research hypotheses were tested using the chi-square statistical tool. The study employed the dissatisfaction theory. The population of the study comprises of three hundred and seventy (370) out of four hundred (400) that were used in the research work. The research discovered that #ENDSARS protests do not posed any serious threat to democracy in Nigeria. The findings of the study revealed that the right to protest should not be limited, Nigeria citizens should be allowed to protest against government policies that are not people oriented, political protest is necessary for the growth of democracy in Nigeria. The study concludes that with the increasing trend of protests globally, the citizens would continue to put pressure on government to address public issues. The study recommends that having realized the strength of protest wthin the context of social media activism, government of Nigeria must now seek ways to address pre-existing social factors such as poverty, unemployment, hunger and other social ills that motivated anti-government social movements in the country whether offline or online

COLLABORATIVE FOOD SECURITY: A PANACEA FOR SUSTAINABLE PEACE IN NIGERIA

    No full text
As a multi-linear and a dynamic process, peace can be approached from different trajectories one of which is food security where mutual collaboration of stakeholders is key. The high incidence of conflict relapse in post-conflict communities in Nigeria is often attributed to the absence of food while the presence of food serves to minimize violence to a great extent. This clearly indicates the central and dynamic role of food within the conflict cycle. Thus integrating the food security approach in peace-building or postconflict reconstruction is a critical precondition for the realization of sustainable peace in which multi-sectoral collaboration remains a key prerequisite for fast-tracking the erection of a formidable food security systems devastated by conflict. Logically, this will minimize conflict to a great extent while paving way for sustainable peace and development. This research is largely theoretical and finds its utility in the conflict transformation theory. It also uses secondary data as well as quantitative method of analysis

Banditry in Nigeria nation is persistently gaining momentum especially states like zamfara, sokoto, katsina among others. North central part of the country is not an exceptional to bandits. Dominantly Benue, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara and plateau states. To this, organized gangs of criminals have coalesced to profit off cattle theft, instigate violence, rob, claimed of thousands of lives among others have alter socio economic set back, migration patterns and pushed residence of these communities\u27 states to more secure or banditry free part of the country. Using historical approach, this paper examines the issues which gave rise to banditry in north central zone of Nigeria. This study discovered that bad governance, corruption, poverty, poor military budgeting, ethnic marginalization, eye idleness, among other factors are major causes of banditry in this study. The paper therefore recommends security transparency, accuracy and accountability among its officials so that the nation can enhance security strategies that will go beyond its architectures (military, police, NSCDC etc). Building national capacities that will make the states more relevant to the people accelerate passion for patriotism, and building of formidable strong security institutions that are cogent in tackling issues that created banditry in north central Nigeria

The study therefore recommends that good governance and effective control of political and religious institutions will go a long way in controlling religious insurgencies in the northeast in particular and Nigeria in general

INVESTIGATION OF FUMONISIN LEVELS IN MAIZE GRAIN COLLECTED FROM AGRO-ECOLOGICAL ZONES OF NIGERIA

    No full text
Fungi cause kernel rots of maize grain in the field and in storage, and Fusariumis the most important genus of the field fungi. Strains of F. moniliforme and F. proliferatum produce toxic metabolites known as fumonisins. F. moniliforme is a frequent contaminant of maize grain in Nigeria, but information on fumonisin in maize grain in West Africa is only available from Benin. This study was undertaken to identify Fusarium spp. and determine the levels of fumonisin in maize grain from farmers’ stores in Nigeria. Maize grain samples from farmers’ stores in three ecological zones of Nigeria were analysed for mould contents using the direct agar plating technique and fumonisin contamination using analytical High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) methods with detection limits of 20ng/g. The first sampling involved taking maize grain that was between one and four months in stores, while samples for the second survey were taken when the maize grain had been in stores for not less than six months.  The predominant genera of fungi isolated in all the agro ecological zones were Fusarium, Aspergillus and Penicillium. In the maize grains stored for one to four months, the mean levels of fumonisins were 1.25, 0.91 and 0.78 ppm in the rain forest, Guinea savannah and Sudan savannah respectively. In maize grains that were stored above six months, the mean fumonisin levels were 0.71, 0.73 and 0.65 ppm respectively. These results revealed that maize grain consumers across all the ecological zones of Nigeria are exposed to the risk of fumonisin toxicoses. Furthermore since aflatoxins have been found to be unavoidable contaminants of Nigerian maize grain, this study could show that consumers are likely exposed to multiple mycotoxins, the interactive effect of which is still poorly understood, the synergistic or additive effect of mycotoxin combinations could be applied

BOARD STRUCTURE AND FIRM PERFORMANCE IN EMERGING ECONOMIES: EVIDENCE FROM NIGERIA

    No full text
evaluating performance is one of the main goals of business owners because they need to continually improve efficiency in the use of resources. over the years the board of directors have been criticized for performance of firms and their subsequent failure. The study attempts to explore the impact of board structure as a corporate governance mechanism on the performance of firms in Nigeria. To test the hypothesis of the study, we use a sample of 4 publicly traded cement firms in Nigeria for a period of 3 years, 2020-2022. The methodology of the study is quantitative using secondary data source. Regression coefficient was estimated on the collected data. The selected dependent variables used as proxies for performance are return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE) while the selected independent variable used as proxies for board structure are board size and independence. The result shows that board size has a negative impact on ROA while board independence has a positive impact on ROA. However, Board size has positive impact on ROEand Board independence has positive impact on ROE. The study recommends that the management of publicly traded cement companies should discourage large board size and make board independence a priority in order to enhance the firm performance
