The primary purpose of the research was to determine the degree towhich the federal character principle was adhered to during recruitment and promotion at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH). The study employed a survey design whereby relevant information were gotten from distributed questionnaire and journals, books, official documents, periodicals and internet articles. Using Taro Yarmane\u27s statistical sample size instrument, 89 individuals were selected from a total population of 2,742. Data collected through the questionnaire were arranged in cumulative frequency tables while mean average and the Chi-square statistical tool were used to analyse the data and test the hypotheses (using SPSS version 23). The study findings revealed that recruitment and promotion processes at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital through the federal character principle is poorly implemented and this has been as a result of poor feedback mechanisms, poorly trained personnel and favouritism. The federal character principle sacrifices merit for quota and political patronage syndrome, which led to the marginalisation of some ethnic groups. This has remained a significant obstacle for the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital\u27s recruitment and promotion efforts. The study recommended that the management of UATH in collaboration with the Federal Character Commission should ensure strict compliance to fair representation of applicants in the recruitment and promotion process by publishing recruits or appointees for public knowledge. Also, efficient feedback mechanism on recruitment and promotion process should be implemented and personnel in charge of recruitment and promotion should be adequately trained so as to promote efficiency in the recruitment and promotion in the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital

    No full text
One of the methods of assessing the quality of educational provisions is the performance of learners in schools. Test or examination is one of the major ways of evaluating the learners’ performance. Tests play a very important role in the educational system as they are used as tools in measurement and evaluation processes. Test as a tool of measurement process must then be qualitative. The quality of test itself can be determined through test item analysis. An item analysis provides three kinds of important information about the quality of test items. Item difficulty: A measure of whether an item was too easy or too hard. Item discrimination: A measure of whether an item discriminated between learners who knew the material well and learners who did not. Effectiveness of alternatives: Determination of whether distractors (incorrect but plausible answers) tend to be marked by the less able students and not by the more able students. The world is regarded as a global village. As such within the teaching profession, the continent and the entire world are equally forging common fronts to see that the teaching profession has common benchmark, so that teachers’ made test and competencies among others arecomparable across countries. This paper therefore, discussed concept of item analysis and how indices such as difficulty index, discriminating index and distractors index can be calculated. The paper finally recommended among others, that teachers should not only strive to provide teaching material and to test the students’ comprehension about it, but also be able to analyse the quality of their test

Migration and emigration among health care professionals across nations and continents have been a societal issue globally for some decades. The situation is made worse in developing countries, where health care professional always migrates to developed countries in search of greener pastures. Constant migration of trained health care professionals erodes the health care facilities and delivery so much as leaving the health care of the citizen of the developing countries as Nigeria in jeopardy as getting adequate specialist care from trained health care personnel becomes a mirage. The increased movements of relatively well educated persons from developing countries to developed countries was termed “Brain drain” which was first coined by the British Royal Society to allude to the mass movement of technologist and scientist from Canada and United Kingdom in the 50s and 60s to the United States of America USA for better opportunities. Migration of professional health care givers to a more stable socio-political environment for improvement in their educational and professional status, better salaries and quality of life. However, a number of studies were undertaken in the area of brain drain in Nigeria and some other part of the world in order to find out the causes and solution to the problem of brain-drain in both public and private sector but none has been done in Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto. Therefore, it is against this backdrop that the researcher seeks to investigate some factors associated with medical Brain Drain and its effect on healthcare service delivery in Nigeria with particular reference to Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto
