    No full text
The notion of women being involved in SMEs is now commonplace compared to three decades ago but their level of participation in entrepreneurial activities is still low compared to their male counterparts. The low involvement of women in the SME sector inBorno State is a major cause of concern since they are marginally involved in business activities by the current economic dispensation. The institutional theory reflects a sociological lens of interactions between institutions and societal research scope and present a selection of human behavioral theories that are particularly relevant to the domain of women\u27s entrepreneurship. The contribution of women to the growth of an economy has been shown to be quite significant but as with other policies, it is not gender specific. The qualitative research method used open-ended, semi-structured interviews with Fifteen (15) women entrepreneurs. Government policies and programs, the need for women\u27s capacity-building programs, easy access to financial institutions, and gender bias in the allocation of resources were themes that emerged from the study. The findings of the study reveal that government do not have a comprehensive policy on the role of women participation in entrepreneurship. It also reveals that women receive less empowerment and support in their businesses. Hence, more research is required in this sector. Women have been reported to contribute immensely to the social and economic fabric of many countries. Hence, the study recommends that it is important for the relevant agencies to recognize their inputs, which will enable them design specialized institutional packages or policies for their entrepreneurial needs. Many of the interventions are skewed towards the male\u27s counterpart and females are mostly streamlined in their policies

The main objective of this study was to examine the relationship between the level of corruption and insecurity in Nigeria. The study adopted public choice theory and frustration aggression theory to explain the high incidence of corruption and insecurity in Nigeria. The research design was content analysis of secondary data from transparency international for data on corruption and Mo Ibrahim Foundation for data on insecurity. These were presented in tables and analyzed using percentage and average. The Pearson Correlation coefficient was used to test the hypothesis. The study confirmed a high incidence of corruption and high incidence of insecurity in Nigeria and found out that light punishment, delay in dispensation of justice and poor public sector wages were among the causes of high incidence of corruption in Nigeria. The hypothesis tested revealed a negative and insignificant relationship between corruption and insecurity in Nigeria (-.206) and with 56.9% level of significance which is greater than 5%. The study concludes that the high level of corruption is not responsible for the high incidence of insecurity in Nigeria. However, since corruption is known to have negative multiplier effect, there is need to reform the judicial system in order to guarantee speedy dispensation of justice, increase public sector wages and salaries among other things. In addition, since the study could not established that corruption is one of the factors responsible for insecurity, there is need for government at various level to be responsible and responsive to the needs of the citizens. There is need for government to intensify efforts to eliminate poverty and unemployment which is another known cause of insecurity in Nigeria by improving the quality of governance

The paper assesses the role of cross border crime in escalating the Liberia and Sierra Leone conflicts. The article shows how the warlords exploited the weak state structures on the borderlands to entrench a terrorizing war economy fueled by cross border crime. The study argues that the Liberia and Sierra Leone conflict aided transnational destabilizing activities on the borderlands and vice-versa, the illicit border trade that was catalysed by the conflicts was key in dragging and broadening the conflicts across the Mano River region. The paper adopts a qualitative historical method to validate findings from library research and eyewitness accounts that show how the warlords capitalize on the small arms trade, Diamond/Drug trafficking and Mercenaryism to nourish and escalate the conflicts and contagiously debilitate the West African region

    No full text

developing countries are documented in the empirical literature but results are inconclusive. This study examines the interaction effect of financial inclusion and institutional quality on living standard in sub-Saharan Africa. Using panel data on 45 Sub-Saharan African countries from 2004 to 2021, the study employed the two-step system Generalized Method of Moments for the analysis while quantile regression was deployed to assess the reliability of the GMM estimations. Two interaction variables (control of corruption interacting with number of ATMs, and regulatory quality interacting with number of ATMs) were used. The empirical results indicate that the interaction between control of corruption and number of ATMs have a significant and negative effect on living standard; while the interaction between regulatory quality and the number of ATMs have a significant positive effect on living standard in sub-Saharan Africa. The results are robust to the alternative estimation technique employed. The study therefore, advocates that governments in various Sub-Saharan African countries should initiate and implement measures aimed at curtailing corruption and improve regulatory quality in order to enhance financial service inclusivity and through that improve the living standard in the region

    No full text
Serials are the backbone of every academic library because of their peculiar nature of being carriers of current information in all fields of human endeavors. Serials are usually expensive both in terms of acquisition and management. As such, academic libraries commit substantial percentages of their annual budgets to serial acquisition. They have a unique value and play a very important role in the operations of academic libraries more especially in marketing the products and services of the library. Because, library is a holistic compendium of knowledge where information resources in form of books and non-book materials are philosophically collected and systematically arranged for dissemination to cater for the ever changing user’ information needs, the potential users need to be aware of the available resources in the library before they can come into the library to utilize the resources which is done through promotion which is aided by serial resources. Thus, marketing is an integral part of the library services, because it has to do with basic principles of librarianship, that is, to develop good collection and user-oriented service as recently, library and other non-profit organizations have become aware of the need to market their products and services. Thus, library and information products and services are now being recognized as commodities that can be sold, exchanged, lent and transmitted, hence, there is a need for attraction, invitation, retention and satisfaction of users’ need in order to will their loyalty; and this is easily done by serials

AN EXAMINATION OF INTERGOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS BETWEEN STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS IN NIGERIA

    No full text
Intergovernmental relations facilitate negotiation, non-hierarchical exchange of information, and cooperation between the institutions of the two levels of government.Local Governments needed to be accorded full financial and administrative autonomy and allowed to operate by the spirit and letter of the constitution for effective democratic governance. To this effect, various regimes had made frantic efforts to revive, reform, revitalize and restructure the Local Government system in Nigeria to enhance its freedom of action and remold it into an effective springboard for democratic governance and national development.Constitutionally, local government is the third tier of government which exists as an independent entity, possessing some degree of autonomy and sovereignty. Over the years there is a wide cry by most Council Chairmen on the incessant interference by the state governors. in the area of financial and administrative freedom, swift reactions and condemnations by various stakeholders. This research adopted participatory democracy as its theoretical framework. The theory postulates that the central idea behind the creation of a local government as a third tier is to bring development down to the people. The method of data analysis in the research is content analysis. This allows entails the use of the work of other scholars and documents from the government. It is in the light of the above that we are recommending among other things that (i) Local Government allocation should be paid into their account directly after the Federation Account Allocation Committee disbursementand (ii) State Governors who tempered with the Council\u27s fund should be sanctioned accordingly
