FROM CIVIL WAR TO BOKO HARAM: AN ANALYSIS OF THE MAJOR IMPEDIMENTS TO A SUCCESSFUL NATION BUILDING IN NIGERIA.
Since its independence on the 1st October, 1960, Nigeria’s effort to successful nation building had been greatly threatened by a combination of regional and tribal sentiments. Immediately after the nation’s independence, intra-regional and interregional rivalries, resulting from claims of discrimination and marginalization, brewed. Thus Within a span of seven months, two successful military coups were staged. The first was on the 15th January 1966 and the second in July of the same year. The events that followed led to Civil war 1967-70. The war, more than anything else threatened Nigeria’s internal security. Added to the lingering claims of marginalization and discrimination that followed the civil war, was political thuggery and manipulation of religion associated with the second republic and the successive military juntas. Religiously motivated aspiring groups such as Maitasine soon sprang up. While Nigeria was still recuperating from the scourge of the Maitastine crises, General Ibrahim Babangida registered Nigeria as member of the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC). This generated a lot of friction among Nigerians. However, greater controversies began when President Ibrahim Babangida annulled the 1993 presidential elections. The wave of Sharia in the early days of fourth republic hit the nation’s unity badly. This was followed by growing ethno-religiousconflicts, organize kidnappings and banditry. It is lamentable that Nigeria survived all these crises and conflicts, but only to be threatened by a sectarian group, Boko Haram. Attempt, here is made, to historicize some of these crises frustrating Nigeria’s effort to a successful national development
THE ESTABLISHMENT OF CENTRES OF QURANIC EDUCATION IN ZARIA, 1860 – 1960
The traditional Islamic education system in Birni Zaria is gradually being replaced by Islamiyya schools in different houses and wards in Birni Zaria, and (new) Islamic schools modelled after public schools in Nigeria. This education system was first championed in Birni Zaria by the three oldest Islamic Quarters in Kona, Juma and Zage-Zagi before the Usman Ibn Fodio’s Jihad in 1804. After the jihad and establishment of the Zazzau Emirate, political development, socioeconomic and cultural re-orientations led to the Islamization of all aspects of human endeavour in the emirate through the provision of Islamic education. In Birni Zaria, this development led to the establishment of additional Centers of Islamic learning in Kofan Doka, Limancin Iya, Magajiya, Kakaki, Karfe, Nupawa, Kusfa, and Albarkawa, and the emergence of a classical group of Islamic scholars (Ulama) who constitute the council of Ulama in Birni Zaria. Some of these Islamic scholars include Liman Kona Shaykh Haruna Al-Rasheed, Liman Juma Shaykh Abubakar Al-Futy, Shaykh Abbas, Shaykh Sani Ibn Rilwan, Shaykh Musa Magajiya, Shaykh Yahuza Ibn Sa’ad, Shaykh Shittu Ibn Abdul-Rauf, Shaykh Ma’aji Ishaq, Shaykh Abubakar Ishaq, Shaykh Jubril Sani Mallam Na Iya, and Shaykh Sambo Mai Cassa’in. Today, traditional Islamic schools\u27 composition, enrollment, graduation and patronage have greatly diminished. In some Centres of learning, the traditional education system had disappeared completely. However, the memory of these Islamic scholars is still fresh in their respective communities. The system is managed by prominent female Islamic scholars in their parents or husband residences. The bulk of Arabic/Hausa Ajami manuscripts left by some pioneer scholars remained largely in private hands, some reportedly destroyed due to poor preservation and storage. The importance attached to these veritable sources of the history of Birni Zaria is immeasurable
THE EXPLOITATION OF THE NIGERIAN PEASANT FARMERS BY THE MARKETING BOARD SYSTEM IN NIGERIA IN 1954
The establishments of the Commodity Marketing Boards (CMBs) and later Regional Marketing Boards in the British Colonial Empires in the 1940s and the early 1950s were primarily aimed at stabilizing prices of produce for the “benefits” of the local producers against the vagaries of world market prices to enhance the export of these produce. However, to a large extent, these set objectives turned out to undermine the purpose for which the Marketing Boards were established in all the British Colonial Empires. This paper examines the activities of the Regional Marketing Boards (RMBs) that were set up in the four regions of the Nigeria, including Southern Cameroon in 1954. RMBs showcase how the local producers were exploited and denied the benefits ofhaving a good world market price for their produce that should have accrued to them from the activities of the Boards. The material documents used in support of this finding are largely a product of classified archival materials from the British National Archives in London
