From Love at First Sight to Public Enemy: The Emergent Lakurawa Terrorist in Northern Nigeria
Nigeria is grappling with various forms of insecurity, notably the threats posed by Boko Haram, Ansaru, the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), and banditry, among others. Adding to these challenges is the rise of Lakurawa, a group initially established as a friendly force but which has since evolved into a violent terrorist organisation. This paper investigates the group\u27s emergence, its transformation into a violent entity, and the government’s responses to this new threat. Using the fragile and failed state framework and documentary sources, the study reveals that despite recent claims of Lakurawa being a new group, it has been active in Nigeria for some time. Initially invited to protect communities from internal bandits, the group later turned violent, adopting extremist traits that now pose significant risks not only to Nigeria but also to the wider Sahel region. The paper emphasises the importance of addressing the root causes of state fragility arising from tackling unemployment and poverty, climate change, porous borders, and ungoverned spaces

Performance of Microfinance Institutions: Do Risk Management Regulations really matter?
The study was conducted to assess the impact of risk management regulations on the financial performance of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) in Tanzania. Specifically, the study was guided by a descriptive research design. The target population of this study included Microfinance Institutions (Tier 1 Microfinance Institutions) in Tanzania where all three (3) MFIs were selected. The study employed secondary data collected from the MFIs yearly annual reports from 2019 to 2022 and Bank of Tanzania (BOT) published statistics on MFIs. The study used a panel data random effect model to establish the relationship between risk management regulations and MFIs financial performance. The study found capital adequacy ratio requirements (CAR) to statistically positively influence the financial performance of the MFIs while the cash reserve requirements (CRR) statistically negatively influence the financial performance of the MFIs and liquidity ratio requirements (LRR) do not significantly influence the financial performance of the MFIs.The study concluded that MFIs should continue adhering to the available policy and regulations so as to evade exposed risks. Social science has at its disposal various techniques of data collection including desk research as one of the qualitative methods. The premise of this paper is the fact that though desk research is utilized either as a lone research method or at the level of literature review in the course of research enterprise, users of the method are often times stuck in the process, leading to inchoate findings and conclusion. To that extent, this paper provided the necessary guidelines for its use which included research questions, sources of data collection, verification of the secondary materials, eligibility of the materials and methods of data analysis. As a methodological paper, the application of the method in the context of farmer-herder crisis in Nigeria and its impacts on agricultural productivity was done. The paper sampled 85 peer-reviewed articles excluding published data from local and international institutions after an initial 112 downloaded articles sourced from Scopus database. The findings revealed that the crisis has both de-motivation and de-investment impacts. The paper concluded that though there could be some inherent challenges with the use of desk research such as synthesis of large volume of data, it requires an experienced and committed researcher to take advantage of the cost effectiveness and timeliness that the method provides to advance knowledge production and enhance the basis for future research through quality findings and recommendations
