    No full text
Despite established agricultural policies and programs in Nigeria, farmers face persistent challenges such as inadequate access to credit, poor infrastructure, and limited market access. These issues hinder productivity and profitability, leading to outcry among farmers who struggle to sustain their livelihoods and contribute to national food security. To this end, this paper examines the impact of River Basin Development Authorities on agricultural development in Nigeria. The study is anchored on structural change theory as its framework of analysis. Data for were collected from questionnaire administered to a sample of 331 respondents and in-depth interview involving 4 respondents selected from the sampling units. Data were also collected from secondary sources. Data from questionnaire were analysed using simple percentages and frequency tables, while data from in-depth interview were analysed using narrative analytical method. Finding revealed that River Basin Development  Authorities are key players in ensuring efficient water management, which is critical for agricultural productivity. Their activities include developing irrigation infrastructure, controlling floods, providing technical support to farmers, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Secondly, the study reveals that despite concerted efforts by River Basin Development Authorities in Nigeria, their impact on fisheries, mechanized farming, livestock, and agricultural development remains elusive. The authorities have struggled to effectively translate their efforts into meaningful outcomes, leaving a gap between intentions and actual impact on the ground in these crucial areas of development. The study recommends among others that to ensure that RBDAs\u27 interventions are result-oriented and beneficial for local farmers, there needs to be a focus on continuous monitoring and evaluation of projects. This includes assessing the impact of RBDAs\u27 activities on agricultural productivity and sustainability, as well as gathering feedback from farmers to make necessary adjustments

    No full text
This study evaluated the role of the Brekete Family Reality Show, a Nigerian media platform, in resolving domestic conflicts in Abuja and Nasarawa State. Drawing on Agenda-Setting and Conflict Resolution theories, the research examines the programme\u27s influence on audience attitudes, mediation effectiveness, and operational challenges. Using a mixed-methods approach—surveys (n=400) and interviews, the study findings reveal that 75% of respondents perceive the show as impactful, crediting its use of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms for fostering peaceful resolutions. Yet challenges such as lack of follow-up (28.3%) and resistance to face-to-face dialogue (22%) hinder sustained success. The programme\u27s accessibility, facilitated by Pidgin English broadcasts, enhances its reach among low-literacy populations. The study underscores media\u27s potential as a non-traditional ADR tool in Nigeria

Electricity Bands Epidemic in Nigeria: Tariffs Hikes and Consumer Responses

    No full text
The recent energy crisis in Nigeria led to a significant increase in electricity tariffs, introduced as part of a broader strategy to attract investment, enhance energy supply, and meet rising consumer demand. In April 2024, the Federal Government of Nigeria implemented substantial tariff hikes across all electricity bands (A to E), based on daily consumption levels. These increases were justified as necessary to offset escalating production costs and stimulate private sector investment in the power sector. However, the policy sparked widespread concern, particularly among low-income households, who questioned the affordability and fairness of the new pricing structure. This article critically examines the electricity tariff adjustments and the responses of Nigerian consumers. Adopting a qualitative methodology, the study draws on both primary and secondary sources, including interviews, academic literature, internet documents, newspapers, and public commentary. The study reveals that many consumers have responded by seeking alternative energy solutions, such as solar power, while simultaneously voicing strong opposition to the tariff increases. The debate surrounding the policy shift underscores deeper systemic challenges in Nigeria’s energy sector. Rather than focusing solely on tariff adjustments, stakeholders have called for urgent investment in modernising and expanding the national grid to deliver reliable, accessible, and affordable electricity for all Nigerians

    No full text
Testimonial advertising has become a dominant marketing strategy for influencing consumer behaviour, particularly on e-commerce platforms in Nigeria. This study examines how testimonial advertising on Jumia and Jiji online stores influences purchasing decisions among university students in Nigeria. Through a quantitative research approach, data was collected from students at Nasarawa State University, Keffi and the University of Abuja to assess the types of testimonials, their perceived credibility, their impact on consumer behaviour, and associated challenges. The findings reveal that feature-specific testimonials and influencer endorsements are the most influential types of testimonial advertising, with balanced reviews that acknowledge product strengths and weaknesses being perceived as most trustworthy. While testimonials significantly impact brand perception and purchasing decisions, students maintain a healthy scepticism regarding authenticity. The study shows that testimonial advertising effectively shapes consumer desires and purchasing decisions, but its effectiveness varies based on presentation, type, and perceived authenticity. The research contributes to the existing literature by providing insights into the effectiveness of testimonial advertising in fostering consumer trust and engagement in the Nigerian e-commerce environment

This study explores the challenges and strategies associated with preserving cultural heritage in Nigerian libraries, aiming to assess the effectiveness of current practices and propose enhancements. A qualitative research approach was employed, utilizing surveys and case studies of six libraries across Nigeria\u27s geopolitical zones: National Library of Nigeria (Abuja), Lagos State Library (Lagos), Enugu State Library (Enugu), Kano State Library (Kano), Plateau State Library (Jos), and Rivers State Library (Port Harcourt). Data collection involved semi-structured interviews with librarians and archival staff, alongside direct observations of preservation practices. NVivo software was used for thematic analysis of the collected data, allowing for an in-depth exploration of recurring themes and patterns. Findings indicate that Nigerian libraries face significant challenges in preserving cultural heritage materials, including inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, lack of trained personnel, and environmental factors such as humidity and pests. Despite these obstacles, libraries have adopted various strategies to mitigate damage and enhance preservation, including digitization, climate control measures, and staff training programs. The study recommends that policymakers prioritize funding allocation for library preservation, libraries adopt advanced technological solutions for digitization and environmental control, and public awareness programs be established to garner community support and involvement. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to assess the long-term impact of preservation strategies and explore innovative methods for heritage conservation. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on library preservation and provides actionable insights for enhancing the preservation of Nigeria\u27s rich cultural heritage

Microwave plasma atomic emission spectroscopy is a multi-elemental, less expensive instrumental technique introduced as an alternative to more costly inductively coupled plasma techniques. This technique offers a lower maintenance cost, relatively lower cost, good speed, and detection. In this study, the concentrations of Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, and Zn in selected soil samples were determined using this technique. Three regions were randomly selected for investigation within Cece Village. Samples were collected from the top and lower soil horizons in areas A and B and river sediments using the random grab method with appropriate sampling tools. The samples were processed in the laboratory, including sieving, pulverizing, and digestion. The results of this study revealed that trace concentrations in mg/kg of chromium had the highest value (1.50 ± 0.08) and lowest value (0.50 ± 0.03), copper had the highest value (28.50 ± 1.50) and lowest value (1.12 ± 0.06), iron had the highest value (303.51 ± 11.01) and lowest value (152.04 ± 7.03), magnesium had the highest value (273.52 ± 11.41) and lowest value (1.50 ± 0.08), and zinc had the highest value (170.51 ± 51) and the lowest value (162.12 ± 7.04). The findings of this study revealed that the concentrations of the elements found in various soil samples were within permissible limits. This suggests that the sampled region is safe for crop cultivation and other agricultural activities
