This study is aimed at developing a strategic gender needs framework for the senior citizens in Davao City. The study used a convergence-parallel mixed methods design and a snowball sampling technique. As part of the quantitative study, a survey questionnaire consisting of 20 items was used to collect data from the 20 senior citizen participants. On the other hand, a qualitative study was also facilitated through the key informant interviews of two elders. The location of the data gathering is in Davao City. The mean and t-test were the statistical tools used in the study. Also, data triangulation was utilized to check the convergence (divergence) of the results. The study’s findings showed that senior citizens’ levels of deprivation were high in terms of help-seeking behavior. In the same manner, the participation level in terms of family and community decision-making was very high. Meanwhile, it was found that there is a significant difference in the level of deprivation experienced in terms of help-seeking behavior and participation in decision making among senior citizens when grouped according to age. This concurs with the fact that, as they age, they are likely to experience deprivations. On the other hand, the study concurred that there is no significant difference in the level of deprivation experienced in terms of help-seeking behavior and participation in decision-making among senior citizens when grouped according to sex, primary source of income, average monthly income, and medical history. Given the qualitative data, this study confirmed that the salient and dominant themes triggered in the thematic analysis are: the prolonged turn-around time in the scheduled social pension pay-outs; the insufficient amount of social pension; the lack of livelihood training or programs obtained; and the age discrimination to access work. Furthermore, significant statements about the deprivation experiences of senior citizens were analyzed, which resulted in a common category called “poverty.” Lastly, Senior Citizens on Relevant Enactions (SCORE) is the proposed strategic gender needs framework for the senior citizens in Davao City that aims to provide an avenue to enhance their living conditions through suitable and relevant strategies and programs

The power of translation is evident because it intellectualizes the language and the person itself in its long process especially in the current context. A proof of this reality is the change in orthography used in religious and cultural texts such as Pasyong Bikol. This study focused on the intralingual translation of the Bikol Passion, identified the Bikol and Filipino Orthography rules highlighted by intralingual translation. This study is subjected to Descriptive-qualitative design. Study participants were selected using Convenience Sampling and Purposive Sampling from Dominorog Calabanga and Naga City, Camarines Sur. Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and interviews were also used here. It was discovered in this study that from the familiarity and perception of the words or symbols used in the modern version of Passion, all the participants positively recommend and accept the Intralingual translation. In general, it is suggested that it be used in reading and studying the literature, culture, and even history of Bikol Passion. Additionally, as a religious text, the content of the modern version has not been changed. This was seen as a preliminary study to promote the intralingual translation of other religious works in Bikol

The nation has been dubbed the “Social Media Capital of the World” (2021) since it leads daily social media usage globally. YouTube is one of the most widely used platforms in the Philippines, and vlogging has contributed to the rise in fame of numerous personalities. Among them was a motorist whose peculiar driving style won him admiration from other drivers. The study will perform a preliminary analysis of the chosen MoTouristas YouTube clips to achieve this. This YouTube video has amassed thousands of followers because of its distinctive approach to helping the nation while on the road. JT, the driver-vlogger, represented Juan Turismo and his fellow road warrior. Their organization embarked on a journey to visit all 81 provinces in the nation over three (3) years of motor use, as demonstrated by vlogs. In under two years, the crew gathered approximately two hundred video clips. The videos’ main themes center on the various customs they encounter along the way and each province’s distinctive gems. Researchers focused their analysis on ten (10) videos that attracted a lot of views out of the hundreds of videos that JT uploaded on its YouTube channel. The following issues were the basis for a thorough analysis of each movie using the visual framing developed by Dimitrova and Rodriguez: the motorist’s destination, the motorist as a historian, motorists’ MoTour, motorists’ feast, and the meet-up of the motorists.

Topic Development in Talks Among Women

It has been found that language use differs according to age,  gender, socioeconomic class, background, region, and ethnicity.  Linguists should look at this reality further and more thoroughly. In  the context of mainstream, English-speaking, white settings in the  US, UK, and Australia, their studies have examined how language  usage varies by gender. This qualitative research is conducted to  discover the topics and how they develop in the talks among single,  middle-class, white women in their 30s, working, and living in New  York City, United States of America (USA). The data are taken from  16 conversations considered talks among these women as the  main characters in the 12 episodes of the first season of the USA TV  series, Sex and the City. The data are then analyzed by referring to  the research conducted by Jennifer Coates (Coates and Cameron,  1988). Based on the analysis, it is found that these talks are about  women’s opinions, feelings, and experiences and that there are six  patterns of topic development in these all-female conversations.  These conversations consist of exposition, development, and coda  but only differ in how the participants introduce the topics, lead  them into the discussion, and end the conversations.

Hetairas: The Pre-Feminist Empowered Womenof the Western Antiquity

Women being equal to men is a rare episode in antiquity. However, the existence of hetairas proves that the oppression of women throughout history cannot be steadily maintained as the sole relationship between the sexes, where men always dictate the dynamics of power. The strategic utilization of their sexuality enabled hetairas to participate in the intellectual, political, and artistic fields; such experience of a select group of women should be seen as a nuanced exposition of women’s history before the advent of the feminist movement. The hetaira, whose identity was associated with the elite sympotic culture, was antithetical to both the prostitute and the wife in terms of her privilege for self-definition and economic independence. With her capability to navigate the spaces dominated by men, a hetaira may seemingly appear empowered by not being commodified, just like a prostitute or a wife who was unable to live outside the sanctity of marriage. However, her ‘glory’ is at the mercy of the attention and material benefits she receives from her male patrons

Effect of Groin Field Installation in the Shoreline in Agoo, La Union, Philippines

Shoreline accretion and erosion are heightened by rising sea levels and powerful storm waves, posing increasing challenges for coastal communities. In response, groin fields—specialized structures built perpendicular to the shore to trap sand—have been implemented. To ensure effective coastal management, ongoing monitoring of these structures is essential. Satellite images from Google Earth were utilized to investigate the groin field\u27s impact on the study area. This study proposes a technique for shoreline position detection and extraction from satellite images through threshold segmentation, edge detection, and automatic curve selection. The processed images provided shoreline positions used to calculate the change in shoreline width before and after the groin field construction. The influence of a groin field on shoreline change is investigated in the coastal zone of Agoo, La Union. Larson\u27s shore model is fitted to the detected shoreline positions utilizing the TikTak global optimization algorithm and the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) algorithm. This process determines the optimal shore diffusivity and breaking wave angle for each year that best represents the shoreline position. In regions of the groin field with greater sand  transport, higher shore diffusivity values and smaller breaking wave angles are observed. This research can be utilized for preliminary investigations of coastal areas with groin-like structures. Studying the interaction between the groin field and the shoreline provided valuable data for researchers to   consider. This information can be used to assist in forming strategies for optimizing groin placement and understanding potential shoreline   alterations following their installation

SB21: Development of portable watermelon ripeness detector using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Spectroscopy (NIRS) and Acoustics Analysis

    No full text
Watermelon is one of the toughest fruits to distinguish if it is ripe, unripe, or overripe. Its quality must be monitored to improve its commercial viability and profitability. Manual procedures deploy tapping, color examination, and approximate the number of days to determine its maturity stage. These are useful, but their accuracy and precision are constrained since they rely on assumptions. This research aims to develop a non- destructive method of identifying watermelon maturity in the Sugar Baby variety through Acoustics Analysis and Spectral Identification using Fast Fourier Transform and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS). A portable and automated device is built, which includes operations such as detecting sound and internal content quality using a NIRS sensor and microphone, analyzing the wavelength and frequencies collected, and interpreting the results per the standard values provided. The K-Nearest Neighbor approach is applied in which altered signals are computed, compared, and voted on. Three hundred (300) watermelon samples were assessed, wherein two hundred ten (210) were used for standardization, seventy-five (75) for testing and assessment, and fifteen (15) for repeatability. In addition, thirty (30) cohorts were polled to rate the device\u27s efficacy. Based on the findings, combining NIRS and Fast Fourier Transform showed that the ripeness condition of watermelon can be readily identified with high accuracy. Additionally, the data indicated that the device is reproducible and that the human and automated approaches differed significantly. With an overall accuracy of 90.7%, the automated watermelon ripeness detector outperformed the manual detection method
