SAPAGKAT LAGI TAYONG PINAGMAMADALI
An Essay on the Bonifacio-Aguinaldo Schism as Manifestation of National Disunity
This essay conducts an analysis of the underlying factors contributing to theideological and strategic disagreement between Emilio Aguinaldo and AndresBonifacio during the Philippine Revolution. Employing a multi-dimensional approach, the essay scrutinizes the distinct objectives each leader had for the revolution, highlighting the complexities of their conflicting perspectives. Likewise it evaluates the substantive impact of the Aguinaldo-Bonifacio schism on what was otherwise considered a unified revolutionary movement, thereby presenting implications for the interpretation of historical revolutions
Perceptions and Behaviors of BA Sociology Students Related to their Experiences in Doing a Thesis Study
By virtue of the Philippines’ Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) Memorandum No. 40, Series of 2017, Directed Research – or more commonly known as the thesis study – has become a requirement for all students of Bachelor of Arts in Sociology programs in the country. This study recognizes that the thesis requirement is often a difficult endeavor for students and sought to look into the thesis-related experiences of students of the discipline now that it has become mandatory. Graduates of a BA Sociology program from a university in Metro Manila during two academic years (A.Y. 2021-2022 and A.Y. 2022-2023) were invited as respondents to a survey that inquired about three aspects of the thesis experience: (1) their perceptions and experiences regarding the importance of their thesis study, its potential for publication, and their readiness in conducting the terminal requirement; (2) their perceptions and experiences with regard to thesis topics, thesis groupmates, and thesis advisers; and (3) the difficulties they experienced during the conduct of the thesis study and their perceptions regarding the thesis as a BA Sociology terminal requirement. The results of the study demonstrate that BA Sociology graduates whose decision-making processes with regard to the different aspects of the thesis-making experience were governed by practical considerations. The results also suggest that the respondents do not possess a strong research culture despite being graduates of a discipline wherewith, by its very nature as a basic science, research should be a vital element. The author suggests that this lack of a research culture is due to (1) socio-economic, (2) curricular, (3) institutional, and (4) societal factors that impede a proper appreciation of the importance of research
Ang Unang Sigaw ng Himagsikan: Isang Pagsusuring aklat sa The Cry of Balintawak: A Contrived Controversy ni Soledad Borromeo-Buehler (The First Cry of the Revolution: A Book Review of The Cry of Balintawak: A Contrived Controversy by Soledad Borromeo-Buehler)
The First Cry of the Philippine Revolution is one of the most important event in our nations history, It served as the spark for the beginning of the Filipino uprising against the Spaniards who ruled and controlled the Philippines as a colony for more than 300 years. The start of the revolution is also a mean in the process of establishing a revolutionary government which is dedicated to fight the once powerful Spanish empire in order to achieve the freedom of the people from foreign oppressors. Despite being a significant historical event, controversies regarding when and where the first cry of revolution took place continue to remain unresolved. To this day, researchers and historians continue to debate and exchange views on this issue. The historical Dispute emerged when Pio Valenzuela provided a statement to general public; coming out as an alleged eyewitness to the events that occurred from August 22 to August 26, 1896 when Andres Bonifacio and the Katipuneros began gathering in the Kangkong area and other places in Caloocan and Balintawak. This issue became a stormy and heated topic in the academic circle particularly from the historians side, when Teodoro Agoncillo proposed the idea of the Cry at Pugad Lawin on August 23, 1896, as the correct date and location of the first cry of the revolution, contradicting the some of the earlier historical claims that it happened on August 26 in Balintawak. This paper will discuss Soledad Borromeo Buehler’s book and her research aimed at examining, corroborating sources to deny and refute the commonly accepted historical fact of the First Cry at Pugad Lawin; Her series of research conducted aimed to prove that the first cry of the revolution actually occurred on August 26, 1896, in Balintawak, aiming to refute the current claim. In order to expand the discussion of this book review, this article will also be referencing ideas related to this topic from other research conducted by other scholars and academicians, which may be in the form of published works such as books and electronic articles regarding the similar topic being discussed. This is to ensure a comprehensive and detailed analysis and discussion on this book review
Noam Chomsky on Ludwig Wittgenstein: A Contemporary Critique of the Concept of Language Privatization
In contemporary sociological studies, Wittgenstein, in his Philosophical Investigations, contends that the concept of a private language is unattainable due to the inherent necessity of shared meanings and societal conventions within language. Wittgenstein posits that language is intrinsically tied to social norms and communal practices, asserting that the acquisition of language is inseparable from cultural immersion and participation in shared activities – what he terms “playing the game” of language. In contrast, Noam Chomsky challenges this perspective by proposing the existence of a universal grammar innate to humanity, irrespective of factors like race, ethnicity, or demographics. According to Chomsky, while diverse languages may exhibit different word arrangements, there exists a fundamental universality in the underlying meaning of sentences. He suggests that this universal grammar is accessible to individuals through a theoretical cognitive mechanism known as the Language Acquisition Device. Chomsky’s theory posits that humans possess an inborn capacity for language, allowing them to grasp the fundamental structures and rules of any language they encounter, transcending cultural or social boundaries. In this philosophical research project, the authors will re-introduce the debate and its contemporary status. The authors aim to give a strategic in-depth Chomskyan criticism of what Wittgenstein has deemed impossible to arise: Private Language
Assessment of Microplastics in Fish GI Tracts and Shallow Water Sediments in Pugad Baboy Mangrove Area, Kawit, Cavite Using Fourier Transform Infrared-Attenuated Total Reflectance Spectroscopy
Plastic pollution has been an ongoing environmental problem overwhelming people worldwide. Microplastics (MPs) are defined by their small sizes (<5mm) and are continuously pressing concerns due to the threats they bring to the ecosystem. The scarcity in microplastics study limits the resources for future researchers for methods and applications to explore. This study assessed, characterized, and quantified microplastics contamination in fish gastrointestinal (GI) tracts and sediments in the Pugad Baboy Mangrove areas of Kawit, Cavite. Sediments and fish GI tract samples were treated using a modified methodology. The collected microplastic particles under investigation were separated through density separation using ZnCl2 followed by base digestion using KOH. MP particles were examined using an optical microscope and characterized through Fourier Transform Infrared– Attenuated Total Reflectance (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy. Results showed that four polymer identities were detected in the particles – polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate. A total of 67 fragments were isolated from which approximately 26.9% exhibited irregular shapes, 35.8% had a rounded and pellet-like appearance, and 37.3% were filaments. A high recovery rate of at least 90% upon analysis was recorded and the implementation of the proposed modified methodology is strongly recommended based on recovery and results obtained. These findings provided valuable insights into the physical characteristics and distribution of microplastics in the studied environment
A Phenomenological Reflection on Ubos-Biyayaand Petsa de Peligro: Capitalism’s Impact on Filipino Attitude of Spending and Church’sProposition for an Inclusive Economy
This phenomenological study delves into the intertwined concepts of “ubos biyaya” and “petsa de peligro” in the socio- economic landscape of the Filipino society. Ubos-Biyaya, a Filipino term, encompasses the state of having depleted both tangible and intangible resources. Petsa de Peligro, translating to “day of danger,” signifies the period before payday when financial constraints intensify. This paper explores the correlation of ubos- biyaya and capitalism, which leads to the feeling and experience of petsa de peligro, elucidating how the latter emerges as a consequence of the former. It connects ubos-biyaya to planned obsolescence and the cathedrals of consumption, revealing how these systemic paradigms contribute to resource depletion and economic constraints. Furthermore, this scrutinizes the nexus between ubos-biyaya and the critique of capitalism, emphasizing the economic exclusion it engenders. It contemplates an alternative perspective, advocating for an economy of inclusion. This paper is divided into the following substantive parts: 1) defining ubos- biyaya and petsa de peligro; 2) petsa de peligro as an upshot of ubos-biyaya; 3) ubos-biyaya: a preconditioned outcome of planned obsolescence and the cathedrals of consumption; 4) the church on capitalism and the economy of exclusion; and 5) the church’s position towards an economy of inclusion. This exploration hopes to illuminate the cyclical nature of ubos-biyaya and petsa de peligro within the broader context of Filipino economic systems and social structures. It posits a critical evaluation of prevailing paradigms, urging a transition towards inclusive economic frameworks that prioritize sustainability, equitable resource allocation, and social cohesion
Beyond Labels: Uncovering the Complexities of Nanay-Students’ Identity and Experiences in a National High School
This study was conducted to uncover the hindrances and challenges by exploring the life experiences of Nanay-Students at a National High School by understanding their perspective, experiences, and challenges in learning. This study utilized a phenomenological research design, which explored the complexities based on the lived experience of Nanay-Students. Phenomenology was an appropriate approach used for this study which sought to understand the subjective experience of Nanay-Students. Analysis of the data collected was from interviews. The researchers utilized thematic analysis, considered a qualitative data analysis method, that involved identifying patterns or themes in the given data. The findings suggested various experiences, challenges, hindrances, and coping mechanisms faced and employed by these individuals. This underscored the importance of looking into these various experiences to shed light on their classification. Furthermore, the findings could be the basis for policymakers and educators in the implementation of various programs and initiatives that could better adhere to the learning needs of Nanay-Students. Educational institutions, government agencies, and the media should provide more support and resources to Nanay-students, such as childcare services, financial aid, academic counselling, and mental health services. They should also develop flexible learning programs that cater to the needs of Nanay-students. Furthermore, the implementation of “Kalinga Para Sa Mga Estudyanteng Ina” program which aims to provide support and assistance to student mothers could greatly help in achieving academic and parental success
