Babaeng Frontliner at COVID-19 sa Pilipinas: Batayan para sa Isang Epektibong Tugon sa Pandemya na Nakatuon sa Gender (Female Frontliners and COVID-19 in the Philippines: Basis for a Gender-Responsive Pandemic Response)

    No full text
While the mortality rates for men are higher, the socioeconomic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic hit women differently. This qualitative study examines the experiences of eight Filipina frontliners who continued to work during the General Community Quarantine in Metro Manila. Respondents were selected through purposive sampling. The primary data collection method was in depth interview. Phenomenological study was utilized for data analysis. The research resulted in three major themes which emerged out of the experiences shared by the female frontliners (1) there exists a problem in safety and transportation among female frontliners; (2) stress develops from a high-risk work task; (3) coping strategies are utilized to manage daily stressors. Paying attention to concerns of female frontliners can potentially improve preventive practices and positive behaviors in combating the pandemic. There should be a gender lens on the response to COVID-19 to ensure that the unique needs women are addressed not just in the Philippines but in the whole world. Frontline female responders must be guaranteed protection safe working conditions support and fair compensation that answers their needs. Also, there is a necessity for sex and age disaggregated data to further understand how this crisis is impacting women and men differently and to support the data collected from the respondents in implementing gender sensitive an effective response to pandemics

Experiences of BA Sociology Students from a Philippine State University: Recruitment, Retention, and Future Aspirations

    No full text
Sociology as an undergraduate program in the Philippines has expanded significantly. A total of 49 higher educational institutions offer an undergraduate degree in Sociology; 20 of which are in Luzon and 8 are in Metro Manila. Despite this growth, Sociology departments face challenges in recruiting and retaining students amidst a competitive academic landscape. This study was conducted with students from a Philippine state university, exploring their motivations for enrolling, reasons for staying, perceived strengths and weaknesses of the program, and their post-graduation plans. The insights gained from this research could guide future improvements to Sociology programs to better meet the needs and aspirations of students

The aim of the study titled: The Evidence-Informed Experiential Learning Cycle in Building Knowledge and Skills in the Core Subjectsand its Relationship to Student Academic Performance of Manila Ecclesiastical Province School Association (MAPSA) generallyaims to review the evidence-informed experiential learning cycle as perceived by teacher-respondents teaching the core subjects:Math, Science and English in Grade 10 level of MAPSA) NCR. The primary objective of the study is to establish evidence of students’ability to build knowledge and skills through DepEd’s learning competencies of the core subjects: Math, Science, and English in Grade 10 level. The basis of the study was the experiential learning theoretical model of David Kolb which advocates that the success of students’ learning depends on the four elements of the experiential learning cycles namely: concrete experience (doing), reflective observation (reflection), abstract conceptualization (thinking), and active experimentation (application). Quantitative in nature, the study employed statistical tools such as weighted mean and Spearman Rank Correlation. The findings of the study revealed that the elements of experiential learning is evident in the core subjects, with active experimentation and reflective observation as the most evident. Concrete experience and abstract conceptualization on the other hand, are the least evident. The study likewise suggested that the academic performance rating of students in the core subjects is very satisfactory. The study also revealed that experiential learning is not correlated with the students’ academic performance in the core subjects. As a result, the possibility of including experiential learning in the basic education curriculum can be considered, with the hope of providing effective teaching learning experience to both students and teachers

ORGANIZATIONAL CITIZENSHIP BEHAVIOR AND INTENTION TO QUIT: MEDIATING ROLE OF JOB BURNOUT AMONG CALL CENTER AGENTS IN METRO MANILA, PHILIPPINES

    No full text
This research aimed to investigate the relationship between organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and turnover intention, with the mediation of job burnout among call center agents in Metro Manila. A total of 175 participants were recruited through snowball sampling and responded to an online survey. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the average levels of OCB, job burnout, and turnover intention among respondents. Spearman correlation analysis was performed to examine the relationships between these variables, while mediation analysis using the Med-Mod module in JAMOVI assessed the mediating role of job burnout. Results revealed that job burnout fully mediates the relationship between OCB and turnover intention. These findings highlight the importance of promoting organizational citizenship behavior to mitigate turnover intention by addressing job burnout

Indifference to Difference or in Deference to Difference: A Treatise of Inclusion

This paper is a critical investigation of the concept of inclusion. It argues that the alternatives or disjuncts in the strict or exclusive disjunction are mutually exclusive: either we exclude, or we include – no middle ground. The choice to either totally exclude or totally include is a political exercise of freedom of being indifferent to differences or being deferent to differences respectively. In this context, inclusion is viewed as a critical attitude towards pluralism that accepts, but not without deep examination, the breaches of totality and the advances of the radical alterity. The paper begins with [1] a careful examination of the politics of exclusion that exposes and discusses exclusive tendencies of some laws, systems, policies, views, traditions, cultures, and practices. The succeeding parts deal heavily with [2] the navigation of inclusive spaces as a response to conditional or quasi-inclusive spaces, [3] moral justifications of inclusion using Immanuel Kant and John Rawls’ ethical frameworks, and [4] a thoughtful exploration of the role of language in the inclusion of the alterity in a pluralistic age in the lenses of Emmanuel Levinas and Paulo Freire. The paper ends with [5] an articulation of the logic of exclusion-inclusion towards the dialectics of inclusion as a necessarily transforming or transformative process - the means and the end. Save a few, most of the concrete historical examples that are [re]presented in the discussions are admittedly landmark Philippine jurisprudence. Even the laws that are [re]cited never escaped the Philippine context

EDCA as the Geopolitics of Imperialist Crises and its Threat to Peace in the Philippines

The authors, through the theory of capitalist crisis and the theory of imperialism, aim to make an exposé and critique of the Enhanced Defense Cooperative Agreement or EDCA. We employ a methodological framework of historical-geographical materialism and critique of internal relations, entwined with the crisis theory of capitalism manifesting in its late phase of imperialism. We apply such theories to the problem of EDCA as evidenced by various points and experiences of people living in an area near EDCA sites based on the peace mission conducted by the nationalist democratic alliance organization of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (New Patriotic Alliance) or BAYAN and Pilipinong Nagkakaisa para sa Soberanya (Filipinos United for Sovereignty) or P1NAS. Moreover, we argue that the United States of America is enjoying proven-and-tested political and military impunity, from its imperial sovereignty to meddle in affairs of other sovereignties, based on the political concept of a global state of exception through American exceptionalism. From the US genocidal spree against the Filipinos during the Filipino-American war at the outset of the 20th century killed revolutionaries and innocent ones altogether; to its nuclear bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima; the massacre of Vietnamese during the Vietnam War and Laotian people during Operation Barrel Roll; and to its support of dictatorial states in South America and in Asia to buffer popular antiimperialist politics. We investigate how EDCA poses hurdles for peace since it is a geopolitical agenda of continued US hegemony in the world, particularly extending its rotting power and political paranoia in the Asia Pacific Region, which brings spatial and economic logic for a solution to continuing crises of American and Western capitalist domination. Such historical backdrops provide empirical and historized aspects of why EDCA should be seen as a threat to peace and therefore must be continually exposed and resisted

Pagtataguyod ng Lokal na Industriya sa Diwa ng Kooperatibismo: Pakikipanayam sa mga Haligi ng Bagong Barrio Multi-Purpose Cooperative, Pandi, Bulacan (Promoting Local Industry in the Spirit of Cooperativism: An Interview with the Pillars of Bagong Barrio Multi-Purpose Cooperative, Pandi, Bulacan)

Rosas sa Pampang, Bayan sa Dagat: Eko-salin ng mga Piling Tulang Arkipelahiko ni José Martí mula sa Versos Libres (1913) (Roses on the Shore, Nation at Sea: An Eco-Translation of Selected Archipelagic Poems by José Martí from Versos Libres (1913))

(This paper examines and translates five archipelagic poems by José Martí using the approaches of indirect translation and eco-translation. Through selected works from the collection Versos Libres (1913), Martí’s poetry is situated within the intercolonial relations between Cuba and the Philippines—two nations that underwent similar colonial experiences and share a strong tradition of anti-imperialist struggle. As a poet and revolutionary, Martí played a crucial role in Cuba’s liberation from the Spanish Empire. The selected and translated poems tulang “Midnight” (“Hatinggabi”), “Famous Island” (“Tanyag na Isla”), “Like Palm Trees Born in the Sand” (“Tulad ng mga Palmang Sumibol sa Buhangin”), “I Hate the Sea” (“Namumuhi Ako sa Dagat”), at “Sad Sunday” (“Malungkot na Linggo”). These works not only contain maritime and archipelagic imagery but also open alternative ways of understanding the relationships between humans, other living beings, and the world. The translated poems preserve the richness of the Filipino language’s texture, particularly the flow and nuances of the poems. Furthermore, in the spirit of eco-translation, the complex relationship between the poems’ personae and their ecological and social environments emerges, where nature is not merely a backdrop but an active participant in the anti-colonial discourse. This paper also advocates for the potential of archipelagic translation as a form of navigation across multiple, diverse, yet interconnected languages.
