Healthcare Advocacy & Legislation in the Philippines: Social Movement/Civil Society Alternatives to Privatization & Commodification

    No full text
The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation’s (PhilHealth) financial situation is in dire straits, with an official claiming that its actuarial life would last until 2027 only. To achieve free universal healthcare, alternative financing options for the Philippines’ national health care system would have to be considered. This paper aims to analyze historical government health care reform policies vis-à-vis social movement/civil society alternatives – and the corresponding paradigm shifts that they present – which culminate in the recently filed House Bill 9515 (“An Act Providing for a Free, Comprehensive, and Progressive, National Public Health Care System”) authored by the Makabayan Coalition – a bloc of grassroots partylists with strong links with social movements. House Bill 9515’s provisions would bring the Philippine system closer to Cuba’s and the United Kingdom’s systems which both offer useful springboards in making public health care free for all. Thus, the bill can potentially help the Philippines transition from privatization & commodification which have characterized the prevailing framework in the country’s health care system for decades now.

Aesthetics of Mobility: Comparing Singapore’s Changi International Airport and Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport

Airports as gateways play an important role in our globalized society where intercontinental travel is an everyday occurrence. Airport mobilities have traditionally been measured through managerial and economic concepts. Hence, few scholars considered looking at the physical layout of an airport and how it affects the cultural understanding of passengers through an experience of mobility and efficiency. This paper explores efficiency as: (1) a system, (2) a trope, and (3) a privileged value in two Southeast Asian airports – Singapore’s Changi International Airport and Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport. By analyzing their systems and politics of mobility, I maintain that the measure of efficiency inside both airports goes beyond quantitative measures, arguing that the architectural layout of the two airports can be used as another alternative measure of efficiency. Their similarities and differences reflect socioeconomic and cultural conditions that characterize the position of Singapore and Manila in a globalized world. My proposed redefinition augments the overall experience of the global traveler which mirrors the current economic and cultural status of the two cities: Singapore, a seamless network of structured urban rhythms and cosmopolitan flows, all converging into this small city-state that is already a globally acknowledged, economic giant; and Manila, a congested port city, where movements are constrained because of mismanagement and misplaced bureaucracy, thus opportunities are diverged elsewhere.

Medicinal plants are essential in drug development since they serve as raw materials in the pharmaceutical industry. One such plant, Nami (Dioscorea hispida Dennst.), which belongs to the family Dioscoreaceae, is well known for its medicinal properties. This study aimed to identify the bioactive metabolites present in the leaves of D. hispida Dennst. The phytochemical screening of methanolic extract and petroleum ether soluble fraction extract of D. hispida Dennst. leaves revealed the presence of tannin, flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, glycosides, terpenoids, and steroids, all of which possess medicinal properties. Hence, these bioactive metabolites may be employed to develop innovative drugs for several diseases.

This is an attempt to connect the fields of literature and history in creating an image of the Waray in the time and space covered by the study. It is based on the belief that history and literature are streams of experience, events, and awareness of the personality of the people in a particular town or community. To shape the metanarrative of the literary historical relationship, this paper will address three objectives: 1.) describe the development of Waray poetry in the early part of the 20th Century (1900 -1910) by presenting the events that pushed its changes, 2.) to be able to interpret the historical events that can be traced in the writings of Iluminado Lucente that were written during the period covered by the study, and 3.) to be able to explain the significance of the analysis of Lucente’s writings and its connection to the social condition of the period -study the current state of Waray society

With the radical growth of technology and the Internet of Things, social media sites rose as an essential tool in promoting products and services. The intergenerational cohorts are also rapidly growing in the e-business limelight. Various studies targeted millennial consumers and less on Gen Z. Thus, this paper will determine the factors influencing Gen Z’s attitude towards social media advertisement. The study is descriptive-causal, and to determine the 297 respondents as samples, the stratified sampling technique was used. The findings revealed that perceived usefulness and reliability have a positive effect on Gen Z’s attitude towards social media ads. Word-of-mouth is found to be an insignificant factor. Marketers should consider these results to receive a favorable response in online advertisements.

Placing the Good Life: Towards a Phenomenology of Place

    No full text
This paper stresses the place of a phenomenology of place in philosophical discussions on the constituents of what various philosophers designate as the good life. A phenomenological approach to place aids in addressing the taken-for-grantedness of our lifeworld and its implications—including but not limited to—questions on embodiment, freedom, and intersubjectivity. Phenomenology reveals the layers of meaning behind the varying dimensions of human experience that constitute their lived emplacement. In turn, a phenomenology of place examines the onset of a conscious and subjective interpretation of places, and things and concepts surrounding them. Making sense of the importance of place and locality is integral to the meaning-making endeavor that humans bear on their shoulders, even when the inevitable transformation of the world at particular moments in time leads to placelessness. Since phenomenology unfolds the richness of our everyday life, this philosophical reflection contends that placing ourselves is crucial to construing a life well-lived that makes human flourishing possible.

The Pursuit of Fulfillment: A Phenomenological Study of Street Sweepers in the Philippines

    No full text
Street sweepers are one of the most vulnerable groups of workers nowadays due to their working conditions, tenure of employment, health issues, and socio-economic status. Nevertheless, they are the driving force behind the maintenance of solid waste management and the cleanliness of cities.  Using the Self-Determination Theory as the framework of this study, this paper aims to explore the sense of fulfillment experienced by street sweepers in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental. Using phenomenological research design, eight (8) street sweepers were interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide questionnaire. The gathered data were transcribed, validated, and analyzed using the Braun and Clarke thematic analysis approach. Results revealed four (4) emerging themes: maintaining community cleanliness and orderliness, upholding professional integrity and work ethic, being acknowledged and respected in the community, and supporting family livelihood and well-being. In conclusion, the sense of fulfillment of street sweepers is driven by their sense of orientation, commitment, and accountability, how the community values them, and how the work sustains the physiological needs of their families. The city government should recognize the invaluable contributions of street sweepers by ensuring fair wages, benefits, job security, and recognition initiatives, which can foster greater motivation and job satisfaction. Future research could explore ways to improve job security and benefits for workers in similar sectors, ensuring their efforts are recognized and adequately rewarded
