High School Calculus in Focus: A Comparative Study of the Intended Curricula of Select Countries

While many countries are integrating calculus into their high school curricula, there is limited research on how these curricula differ among nations with varying levels of mathematical achievement. To address this gap, this study compared the intended high school calculus curriculum of four countries: the Philippines, South Africa, New Zealand, and Ireland. Through curriculum mapping, the research identified similarities and differences in topic coverage and learning progression across these curricula. The results revealed that the Philippines and New Zealand’s Level 8 achievement standards covered the most topics, while South Africa and Ireland’s ordinary level curriculum covered the fewest. The Philippines, New Zealand’s Level 8 achievement standards and Ireland’s higher level curriculum were well-aligned, rigorously covering derivatives and integrals of both algebraic and transcendental functions. In contrast, South Africa, New Zealand’s level 7 achievement standards, and Ireland’s ordinary level curriculum focused more narrowly onalgebraic functions. Notably, none of the countries defined limits using the ε-δ definition, and only the Philippines formally defined the definite integral. Structurally, only the Philippines treated calculus as a separate subject, while New Zealand adopted a unique spiral approach to teaching calculus topics. These findings suggest the need for further investigation into how these curriculum differences impact students’ understanding of calculus

Welcoming the Youth: A Levinasian Ethical Response to Filipino Familial Norms and Practices

In the Philippines, children are often barred from participating in important familial and societal decision-making processes, as adults would invoke authority to silence the young ones from speaking and sometimes even treating children like retirement plans. Medina, Enriquez, Alampay, and Jocson, among other scholars, have associated this with the typical expectation that children should be submissive to elders and indebted to their families from birth. This paper examines how distorted perceptions of Filipino values rationalize and reinforce totalizing familial practices. In establishing this examination, the philosophical concepts of Emmanuel Levinas are utilized to develop an ethical response to the mentioned issues. Specifically, this philosophical exposition serves as a prelude to appropriation that involves two important actions: a curation of philosophical concepts in constructing an apt theoretical framework and pointers on utilizing the framework in the Filipino context. Thus, the paper proceeds as follows: First, I describe the traditional and evolving Filipino family setup by drawing from the findings of previous studies. Second, I construct a Levinasian ideal family inspired by his concepts of substitution and the Face, fecundity, hospitality, and eros. Lastly, from the first two parts I infer how, under the guise of traditional values, hides a Pseudo-face that totalizes. In response to totalization, I offer an ethical response on how Filipinos should willingly shoulder the infinite responsibility ethics demands.

Ang Kasaysayan at Diskurso ng mga Museo sa Center for Kapampangan Studies (The History and Discourse of the Center for Kapampangan Studies’ Museums)

    No full text

Comparison of Harris Performance as Activation Function to Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU), Leaky ReLU, and Tanh in Convolutional Neural Network for Image Classification

    No full text
Activation functions (AFs) are the building blocks of a deep neural network (DNN) to perform image classification effectively by handling nonlinear data and extracting complex features and patterns. This paper introduces a new activation function (AF) called “Harris” a piecewise and nonlinear nonmonotonic AF inspired from the field of photonics. The AF was integrated to a simple convolutional neural network (CNN) using Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10) dataset to determine the model’s performance in terms of accuracy in training and testing, image classification capability, and feature extraction.  Harris was able to exceed the leaky Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) and hyperbolic tangent function (tanh) target accuracies from α-values −0.80 to −1.00 in image classification, while the testing accuracies were able to exceed the target accuracies of ReLU from α-values −0.80 to −0.95. It was able to handle negative values solving the dead neuron problem and extract complex features through its feature maps which improve the F1-scores of the CNN model in image classification

Social-Emotional Development amid Mobile Learning: Pros, Cons, and Actions

Mobile learning became one of the most prevalent forms of education during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of necessity, many young students gained access to mobile phones and utilized them for both educational and non-educational purposes. Research indicates that while mobile learning can enhance educational outcomes, it may also negatively affect the socio-emotional development of young students if used improperly. This paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of mobile learning and explores potential strategies to optimize learning and minimize, if not eliminate, its adverse effects. Key recommendations include integrating social-emotional learning (SEL), managing screen time, encouraging co-viewing, promoting moderate use of digital devices, early detection of socio-emotional disorders, and implementing relevant policies. Furthermore, incorporating moral training, character building, and habit formation is suggested as beneficial, especially for children

Politika sa mga Obra ng Pantas ng Pelikulang Pilipino: Ang mga Ideolohiyang Politikal sa mga Pelikula ni Ishmael Bernal (Politics in the Works of the Genius of Philippine Cinema: The Political Ideologies in the Films of Ishmael Bernal)

The main purpose of this paper is to identify the political ideologies in five films of Ishmael Bernal: Manila by Night “City After Dark” (1980); Himala (1982); Broken Marriage (1983); Hinugot sa Langit (1985); and Pahiram ng Isang Umaga (1989). The basis of the selection of these films are the nominations and awards they received specifically from the Gawad Urian Awards which gave them either the Best Film of the Decade or the Best Picture award. As its hermeneutical lens, this paper utilized the two-dimensional ideological spectrum of the German theorist Hans Slomp, modified by F.P.A. Demeterio in his book titled Ang Mga Ideolohiyang Politikal ng Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines. This is based on the research of Felicilda and Demeterio (2019) where the said lens was used to determine the political ideologies in the five novels of the Rosales Saga by F. Sionil Jose. In order to accomplish the goal of this research, it has five substantive sections that each analyzes the following: 1) primary message and theme of the film; 2) its stand on status quo and change; 3) its esteem for the individual and state; and 4) its overall political ideology

    Consent: from generation to co-production

The concept of consent and its origin is a topic of intense debate within academia. This paper contributes to the discussion by examining two main perspectives on consent. One viewpoint argues that consent is manufactured or produced, particularly by the ruling class, known as the Marxist perspective on consent. This perspective is supported by the ideas of three influential Marxist thinkers – Antonio Gramsci, Michael Burawoy, and Louis Althusser. The other perspective on consent comes from relational sociology, which suggests that consent is a collaborative effort between the parties involved. This paper delves into the works of three sociologists – Charles Tilly, Pierre Bourdieu, and Nick Crossley – associated with the relational approach in sociology to explore consent as a collaborative process. It presents two contrasting viewpoints on the concept of consent and how it is originated. The paper argues that consent can be not only manufactured but also co-created by social actors. Moreover, it introduces relational sociology by applying it to analyze consent and its creation, generation, and co-production within society. Though the relational approach in sociology is relatively recent, its roots can be traced back to the early days of the discipline in the Durkheim-Tarde debate and the contributions of Georg Simmel. This paper provides an overview of relational sociology, using it as a framework to examine the concept of consent, particularly its generation

Ritwal at Banal na Espasyo: Ang Papel ng Ritwal sa Paghubog ng Komunidad ng El Shaddai

    No full text
This study aims to examine the role of ritual in shaping sacred space and community within the El Shaddai fellowship. Using an ethnographic approach, observations were conducted over five consecutive Saturdays at Amvel City, Parañaque City, to identify and describe the rituals performed during the group’s weekly gatherings. The research found seven primary rituals, referred to as “spiritual activities,” which serve as essential components of the members’ spiritual lives. Additionally, the study highlights the role of the stage as a “sacred space” that functions as the focal point of ritual performance. The analysis reveals that ritual is not only a spiritual practice but also a form of communication that strengthens collective identity and unity within the community. This perspective aligns with James Carey’s Ritual Communication Theory, which posits that communication is a means of meaning-making and fostering participation in a faith-based community. Overall, the research demonstrates that both the performance of rituals and the presence of sacred space contribute to the spiritual development and social connection of El Shaddai members. This study may serve as a foundation for deeper analysis of the role of ritual in various religious communities in the Philippines.

Co-contamination of Raw Vegetables with Meloidogyne spp. and Human Intestinal Parasites: An Emerging Insight in Public Health

This study was aimed at detecting the parasitic contamination in raw vegetables sold in the four public markets in the city of Manila, Philippines. This cross-sectional study was carried out from March to September 2022. Observations on the personal hygiene of the vendors and environmental sanitation were conducted. A total of 87 fresh vegetable samples were  collected and processed for the detection of parasitic life forms using standard parasitological techniques for protozoa and helminth worms. The occurrence rate of at least one parasitic contamination of the vegetables was 39.1%, mostly with Meloidogyne spp. (26.4%). Other parasites detected are Ascaris lumbricoides (8.0%), hookworm (6.9%), Fasciola spp. (5.7%), Giardia spp. (2.3%), and Cyclospora spp. (1.1%). Other parasites are macroscopic (6.9%). Remarkably, a high level of contamination was detected in Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa) 68.8%, cabbage (Brassica oleracea) 55.6%, lettuce (Lactuca sativa) 55.6%, ginger (Zingiber officinale) 44.4%, and carrots (Daucus caruta) 40%. The contamination rates of vegetables from the four public markets were analyzed and a significant difference was noted (x2 = 11.852, p = 0.007908) at p-value <.05. This implies that public markets in the city of Manila could play a role in the transmission of parasitic infections in the area. The high occurrence rate of Meloidogyne spp., which is a spurious parasite of man, was included in the analysis and discussions. It is in response to the emerging discussions regarding the reported passage of Meloidogyne spp. in human stool samples
