Barthes on Writing and Authorship: A Polemical Précis
Get PDFIn this paper we will try to revisit Barthes’ brief essay ‘Authors and Writers’ by way of reopening the essay’s proximity to some of the most important theorists of our time, such as Walter Benjamin, Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida, and most especially, Mikhail Bakhtin whose individual writings on issues of language, translation, etc., to cite a few, mesh without conceptual and analytical difficulty. Their insightful provocations are known for their shared intuitive trajectories which altogether radicalize the concept of the writing craft and its complicated relation to the traditional conception of the author. Their writings carve out a common diacritical space in which, to place the centrality of Barthes in this paper, a kind of circuitousness in writing, or rather, writing around writing, similarly, a strategy intrinsic to autobiographical work, takes the reader to an affirmation of the redemptive potential of involution, ambiguity, and paradoxicality

No full textIsinagawa noong Oktubre 8-9, 2014 ang isang Pambansang Kumperensya ng mga lider manggagawa, trade union centers mula sa iba’t ibang panig ng bansa at iba pang obrero mula sa plantasyon, minahan, manupaktura, serbisyo at iba pang labor advocates mula sa hanay ng akademya, lawyers, legislators, taong simbahan at iba pang pang mula sa mga organisasyon na nagtataguyod ng karapatang pantao. Ang nasabing kumperensya ay magkatuwang na inilunsad ng PUP Institute for Labor and Industrial Relations (ILIR), ng All UP Workers Alliance at pinangunahan ng Center for Trade Union and Human Rights (CTUHR) bilang bahagi ng kanilang ika30 anibersaryo ng paglilingkod at pakikibahagi sa pakikibaka ng uring manggagawa at sambayanan. Ang Pambansang Kumperensya ay may temang “Isulong ang Karapatan, Labanan ang Neo-liberal na Atake sa Manggagawa at Kilusang Paggawa” at dinaluhan ng mahigit 100 kalahok mula sa iba’t ibang panig ng bansa.

The People’s Resistance and Struggle Against Large-Scale Mining in Mindanao
Get PDFThe history of struggle against large-scale mining is as old as when large-scale mining was first introduced on our islands when the Spanish colonialists came in search of gold and spices. As early as the 16th Century, various expeditions were sent to find and wrest the gold mines from the natives. Not a single Spanish gold mine was established. Of note were those sent to the Cordillera which were repulsed by the indigenous people. High up in the mountains, the Spaniards were no match to the Igorots, the Kalingas and the tribals who fiercely defended their territories and fought invaders.
The Lumads of Mindanao also fought against this usurpation of their lands. An example is the uprising of the Kaolo, B’laan, Manobo, Samal and Moro tribes against the colonial landgrabbers. The oral tradition in Mindanao is rich with stories of resistance against the Spanish and American invasion of the islands. These stories serve as landmarks in the people’s continuing march against the invasion of their lands. Thus, gathered here are some of the most celebrated accounts of the peoples’ resistance and struggle against large-scale mining in Mindanao, from the point of view of the victims themselves.
Surviving the Anthropocene through the Arts
Get PDFWe are in the age of disasters, an era of climate change, of extreme and life-threatening weather disturbances, of flash floods and super-typhoons. But we are also in an age of voracious consumption of resources, an era of massive oil and nuclear energy use, an age of wastelands and carbon emissions, an age of steel, of plastic, and concrete, the age of GMOs, of soil alteration and water depletion. This is the age of what recent scholars call the Anthropocene, the era of how the human being becomes a geological agent changing the planet. This is where the project hopes to contribute: to come up with an instruction and policy potential material that would introduce some of the major concerns of the Anthropocene era (broadly put this would include Climate Justice, Modernity, Capitalism, Technology, Species-extinction, Urban Planning and Development, and Re-orientation of the Humanities and Social Sciences to meet the conceptual demands of this era). This material will consolidate the contribution of the Arts as vital to the exposure of the Anthropocenic design; the Arts as a way to understand the intricate realities of the anthropocene, arguably the revelation of last things
Influence Of Varying Mix Design And Fiber Length On The Properties Of Water Hyacinth Particle Board
Get PDFThis study is focused on the investigation of the influence of varying mix design and fiber length on the properties of water hyacinth particleboard. A total of nine mixtures were considered using three resin-fiber ratio (70:30, 75:25 and 80:20) and three varying fiber lengths (13 mm, 26 mm and 52 mm) to produce 30 cm by 30 cm by 1.2 cm sample boards. The samples were prepared and tested for Water Absorption and Thickness Swelling Test, Modulus of Rupture Test, Face Screw Holding Strength Test, Internal Bond Strength Test and Edge Screw Holding Strength Test based on the Philippine Agricultural Engineering Standards – 320 (PAES – 320) for Type 100 particleboards. Based on the test results, the amount of resin and the size of fibers used in the mix have an influence on the physical and mechanical properties of the particleboard. The more resin used in the mix the lesser the particleboard absorbs water. Moreover, the use of large amount of resin makes the particleboard brittle. On the other hand, the use of small and long fibers in the mix showed a significant effect on the properties of the board. Incorporating smaller sizes of fibers causes higher thickness swelling due to the larger exposed contact area that absorbs water. Consequently, the use of short fibers resulted to a low holding strength in the board and less continuous bond in the fibers, while the use of longer fibers caused difficulty and consistency in the mix which affected the even distribution of the binder. Hence, voids are formed causing lower strength in the particleboard. Generally, the particleboards having a resin-fiber ratio of 70:30 with 26 mm fiber length reinforcement exhibited the best performance among the nine mixtures satisfying the PAES - 320 for Type 100 high-density particleboard
