The Sacred of Religion and the Sublime of Ideology: Constructing Collective Identity through ReligiousSolidarities
Get PDFThe sacred is ontologically central to the discursive construction of collective identity. Being the institutional expression of the sacred, religion is a staple in all human collectivities and a constitutive force in forging group identities. Hence, religion is coeval and coterminous with society and the human being: religion is society’s birthright and fate. As an ontologically religious being who derives an identity from the social body, the human being is always susceptible to ideological corruption, to an excessive forging of identity and solidarity that blurs the sense of the other, that which is fundamental in the human as a social being. The observed fatal journey of group solidarities from the sacred to religion to ideology in history provides a wealth of data for theorizing the process of ideologization and the susceptibility of religion to undergo this process. The answer lies in the the structure sacred-religion ideology where ideology is seen as an embedded corruptive symptom in all social groups
Million People March Against Pork Barrel: From Potentiality to Actuality
Get PDFIn this essay, I endeavor to ask how virtual reality becomes a public space for advocacies and a venue for crowd mobilization in the Philippines. I particularly analyze the Million People March (MPM) against pork barrel, which happened on August 26, 2013 at Luneta Park in Manila. I also discuss how micro-blogging sites (facebook and twitter) on the cyberspace stirred up the event even before becoming a physical and material event. I try to use the concepts of public sphere introduced by Jurgen Habermas (1989) and as expanded by Lincoln Dahlberg (2007) as cyberpublic, and as virtuality by Hayles and Deleuze (as quoted in A. de Souza e Silva & Sutko, 2011). I also discuss the limitations and constraints to the participative and democratic potentials of blogosphere as explained by Cammaerst (2008).
Panimulang Dalumat sa mga Tula ng mga Magkokopra sa Bondoc Peninsula Tungo sa Pagsiyasat sa Panlipunang Kaakuhan
No full textAng papel na ito ay nakasentro sa panimulang pagsusuri sa panitikan na may kaugnayan sa pagkokopra o paglulukad (paglulukad ang taal na tawag sa Lalawigan ng Quezon sa pagkokopra) na ang karamihan ay naisulat ng mga magkokopra o maglulukad sa Bondoc Peninsula (isang distrito sa Lalawigan ng Quezon). Nakaugat ang pagsusuri sa danas at gunita sa pagkokopra na nakapaloob bilang konteksto ng panitikan na karaniwang tumatalakay kung paano nakikibaka at nakikipaglaban ang mga maglulukad sa Bondoc Peninsula sa karapatan sa lupaing kanilang kinokopra at ang karapatang magkaroon ng maaayos na buhay na hindi napagsasamantalahan ng mga panginoong maylupa na nagmamay-ari pa rin ng ekta-ektaryang lupain sa Bondoc Peninsula. Nagiging mabisang kasangkapan ng mga maglulukad ang panitikan, katunayan nito, naglalabas sila ng mga pahayagan na sila mismo ang nag-iimprenta na naglalaman ng mga akdang pampanitikan tulad ng mga tula tungkol sa karanasan nila sa pagkokopra kasama na ang paggunita nila sa kahirapang dinaranas nila sa hanapbuhay na ito, na halos dugo’t pawis ang iniaalay upang kumita lamang ng panustos sa kanilang pamilya. Dito sinubukan ko ang panimulang pagmamapa sa kultura at kasaysayan ng pagkokopra sa Bondoc Peninsula. Gamit ang dalawang halimbawang tula na likha mismo ng mga magkokopra, sinimulan kong dalumatin ang nagiging panlipunang kaakuhan o identidad ng mga maglulukad mula sa danas at gunita nila sa pagkokopra sa Bondoc Peninsula. Ginamit kong batis ang mga akdang tumatalakay sa kalagayan ng Bondoc Peninsula, tiningnan ko rin ang konsepto ni Alejandro Abadilla kung paano nalilikha ang kaakuhan sa panitikan. Samakatuwid, perspektibong pangidentidad at panlipunan ang tinahak na landas ng pananaliksik na ito tungo sa pagkokonsepto ng tinatawag kong “siyasat sa panlipunang kaakuhan”.
Status of Padyak Drivers in Rosary Heights, Cotabato City
Get PDFThe purpose of this study was to find out the status of the padyak or pedicab drivers in Rosary Heights 4, Cotabato City. The study utilized both quantitative design which described the socio-demographic profile of the respondents and qualitative design that determined the life experiences, reasons why these respondents engaged into driving padyak and common problems they encountered. An interview guide questionnaire was used to elicit information from the respondents. In the collection of data, purposive sampling technique was employed with the assistance of the barangay chairman and dispatcher who recommended the respondents of the study.
Student’s Acquisition of Global Education Perspectives in Social Studies
Get PDFThe world is interdependent. The survival and well-being of a country is intimately related to its ability to deal effectively with other people and nations. With a host of international issues, global studies can be viewed as basic education. In this regard, the study aimed to determine how the promotion of global education in Social Studies impacts on students’ acquisition of global perspectives in the public secondary schools in the DepEd Division of Batangas City. Three hundred fifty-four students participated in the investigation. Results of the study showed that promotion of global education is significantly related to students’ acquisition of global perspectives. The teachers amply integrated global education in their lessons and that their students possessed global perspectives. Global education was regarded as an inherent and important component of the Social Studies curriculum. The discussion of world problems, issues and concerns enabled students to develop virtues of empathy, responsibility and civic mindedness making them global citizens beyond national boundary. The subject Social Studies sufficiently provided a setting for the students to develop global perspectives

Realities and studies reveal that despite unprecedented wealth creation of the global economic system and the pledge of 189 country signatories in the Millennium Development Declaration to eradicate poverty, inequities and hunger prevail particularly in developing nations.
As offshoot of the failure of the mainstream system to trickle down progress and equity, the grassroots, advocacy groups, development practitioners and scholars have been pursuing deliberate actions in line with paradigms such as localization, community economic development and direct social well-being. The aim is to spur responsive and sustainable development from below.
The Management Practices of Multipurpose Cooperatives in the First District of Ilocos Sur
Get PDFThe study determined the management practices of multi-purpose cooperatives in the First District of Ilocos Sur, Region 1. A combination of descriptive, comparative and correlational research designs were used in the study. The respondents of this study were the sixty (65) officers and employees of the eight (8) Multi-Purpose Cooperatives in the First District of Ilocos Sur chosen through random sampling. Results revealed that majority of the officers and employees of the multi-purpose cooperatives belong to the middle-aged group; the multi-purpose cooperatives are dominated by female and married personnel who possess good educational qualifications. The level of management practices of the multi-purpose cooperatives as perceived by their officers follows a pattern wherein planning, organizing, directing and controlling were Very High. The employees of multipurpose cooperatives perceived a High level of management practices along planning, organizing, directing and controlling.
The study recommends a systematic development of action programs aimed at reaching agreed business objectives through directing and continuously responding to the challenges of the times. The multi-purpose cooperatives should intensify their communication process by adopting information technology approaches and adopting a system of incentives that could further strengthen the commitment and participation of theadministrators, staff and members in the operation of the cooperatives. Furthermore, the multi-purpose cooperatives should strengthen their monitoring, evaluation and reporting system through the strict implementation of the Generally Accepted Accounting Procedures (GAAP) and conduct periodic performance evaluation of officers and employees and exercise promptness in submitting reports to the Cooperative Development Authority.

No full textThis article intends to provide some notes on the emergence and development of traditional media in the Philippines such as printed publications, radio, film, television and advertising, including the new media such as online publications and others. It explores the following periods: Spanish colonialism and earlier, reform movement and the Katipunan, Manifest Destiny of the United States, martial law, and current situation. It seeks to create, through review, a preliminary discussion on the history of media ownership, and the economic and political interests underlying it. Aside from mentioning the leading media conglomerates in the world, the article analyzes the effects of liberalization within the framework of neoliberal globalization, and the proposed charter change to accomplish foreign ownership of media. It illustrates the role of printers in the history of the labor movement and the people’s tireless assertion of democracy and press freedom, which includes revealing the killing of media workers one by one through contractualization and the instantaneous killing of journalists through assassination. It was deemed necessary to identify some failures of the media in fulfilling its duties as well as weaknesses in its standards, while emphasizing the call for Filipinization
Violence of Sacred Regimes
Get PDFThe creation of sacred regimes stems in ideology. The sacred as an ideological object legitimates and represents society as a whole in an attempt to crystallize collective consciousness. Here, the attempt is ‘to synthesize the unsynthesizable’ thus forming the imagined totality of the collective, which in turn doomed to fail for the synthesis into a collective union is impossible. The relation of the self to the Other is incongruent vis-à-vis the self fashions the Other as its radical enemy construed in the former’s desire to subjugate the latter under his/her power to the extent of activating violent impulses, energies and sentiments. In so doing, the synthesis turns into manifolds of illusion or fantasy lodged in belief of the sacred expressed institutionally as religion and foments politically as powerful regimes. In this sense, sacred regimes i.e. revolutionary and religious fundamentalist movements are artefacts of this incongruent relation thus a discursive othering that allows an ideological misrecognition between the self and the Other. In this light, the paper argues the complexity of sacred regime and its endeavour to realise a collective enjoyment (jouissance) amidst violence and corruption imposed by religion and ideology
