Primitive Accumulation in China: A Continuing Process
Get PDFThis paper utilizes Marx’s concept of primitive accumulation as a majorprocess influencing China’s historic, social and economic development. Coupling this is the idea that migration is as an integral part of this process (Standing, 1981:192). Migration from the rural to the urban is essentially validating the changes done by primitive accumulation in the countryside and inadvertently transforms the urban and rural landscape that has created poles of development in the eastern region of China. Historicizing the processes as well as looking into the factors that accelerate, decelerate, and hinder primitive accumulation and migration would better our understanding of Chinese development and its trajectories. These processes are then contextualized in the historic changes initiated in China in the late 1980’s that gradually affected their forces and relations of production and are situating a continuing process in the current times such as the Western Development Program enacted at the turn of the twentieth century that is still revolutionizing social relations in other regions of China. Generating from these points are observations for discussion and conclusions.

The study is focused on evaluation of the financial assistance contributed by independent/private power producers in which energy generation facilities and/or energy resources are located in the province of Batangas, allocated among the social development programs, namely: Electrification Fund (EF); Development and Livelihood Fund (DLF); Reforestation, Watershed Management, Health and/or Environment Enhancement Fund (RWMHEEF). Time Series Regression Models and Trends in Drug, Substance Abuse and Index Crimes
Get PDFIt is vital for the Philippines to understand the time series interrelationship of index crimes and drug/substance abuse amidst its mandate on the “War on Drugs”. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the best fitting forecasting models of the time series trends of index crimes and drug/substance abuse in the Philippines. The study employed three approaches; (1) delineating time series regression models of index crimes with drug/substance abuse as explanatory variables, (2) describing pure time series analysis by ways of autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and exponential smoothing, and (3) forecasting the time series trends from 2018 to 2022. These were carried out using IBM SPSS professional. The findings of this study demonstrate an association between drug/substance abuse and index crimes. The regression analyses concluded several associations. For example, variations of the time series data in murder can be predicted by reported new and re-admission cases to various rehabilitation centers and reported cases of marijuana abusers. Rape cases are associated with the admission to rehabilitation centers and reported Shabu abusers. Lastly, carnapping is explained by the number of cases of Shabu abusers. Although some research on the relationship between crime and drug abuse is yet to be done, this novice idea on model delineation in its time series trends will be of immense help among policymakers
Broken Pots, Mended Dreams: Concepts, Causes, and Effects of Teenage Pregnancy in Outreach Barangay
Get PDFThis study aimed to determine the concepts, causes and effects of teenage pregnancy among selected residents in outreach barangay as an entire group and when classified as to sex. Mixed descriptive and phenomenological methods of research were used, utilizing 50 selected residents as respondents, 7 or 14% were male and 43 or 86% were female, whom were selected through random sampling. The data were obtained through the use of a survey questionnaire. Based on the findings, results revealed that when respondents were categorized by the entire group, teenage pregnancy was the transition period between childhood and adulthood, while, incident of teenage pregnancy was high and was avoided in the outreach barangay were the least concepts of teenage pregnancy exist. The top cause of teenage pregnancy was lack of sex education while, the least cause of teenage pregnancy was the socio-economic status. The effect of teenage pregnancy was primarily an incomplete education and the least effect will be isolation and rejection of friends or community. Furthermore, no significant differences and relationship on the concepts, causes and effects of teenage pregnancy resulted among selected residents in outreach barangay.
Lived Experiences among Respondents of Teenage Pregnancy were divided into subthemes: (a) socio-economic status (b) health and (c) family relationship. Coping to Survive the Dilemmas of Teenage Pregnancy were divided into subthemes: (a) family support and (b) prayers and believing to the help Most Powerful Almighty.
Statistical treatments were mean, standard deviation and t-test for independent samples set at 0.05 alpha level. All computations were done via SPSS software.
Self-Esteem and its Correlates to Academic Performance Among University Freshmen Students
Get PDFSelf-esteem is a personal opinion of an individual about herself/ himself and the appreciation of his/her worth. It refers to an accurate, justified, balanced appreciation of one’s worth as a person. However, it can also refer to inflated, grandiose, unwarranted sense of conceited superiority over others. Although it is assumed that self-esteem is a trait that is innate and stable across time within a person, studies have shown that it may notbe the case sometimes. Some experts argued that this trait can be influenced by some factors such as family, peers, environment and school. Likewise, self- esteem is believed to have a relationship with the socioeconomic status, health and health related behavior, and self- efficacy. Reports and studies have implicated the significance of self esteem to academic performance or achievement. Hence, the present undertaking was conducted to determine this line of argument. The result of the study indicated that both male (Mean=2.745) and female (Mean=3.3) students showed positive perception of their self-esteem. When the perceived self- esteem of the male was compared with the female counterpart, using the Pearson Product Moment, the obtained value of r at p≤0.05 is 0.948. The research showed a very high correlation based on Munro’s strength of correlation coefficients. However, the perceived self-esteem of both, male and female respondents showed a low correlation with their academic performance (r=0.42)

They are important must-reads for development workers and leaders, needless to say, contextualizing the cases for ASEAN entrepreneur with a deeper sense of look into the Grameen bank system and other initiatives which are truly oriental but could significantly play an important global role in helping people help themselves. Muhammad Yunus hails from Bangladesh. He is the founder of the Grameen Bank System and the father of microcredit, an economic system or peoples movement that has been helping in uplifting the lives of poor families all over the world via micro financing schemes. Yunus and the Grameen Bank are winners of the 2006 Nobel Peace prize. He also won the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 and the Congressional Gold medal in 2013
Self-Similarities in Gender Inequality and Human Freedom
Get PDFThis study utilized the data of countries worldwide to explore on their fractal distribution vis a vis gender inequality and freedom. It determined whether gender inequality can be enhanced via exercise of unrestrained human freedom. The gender inequality index used in this study measures gaps in reproductive health, empowerment and the labor market while human freedom is measured on the basis of civil liberties and political rights.
Results of the fractal dimension estimates of the variables which are 1.92661 and 1.29979 respectively denote that human freedom accounts for the 61% of the gender inequality among countries included in the study. This finding suggests that the exercise of some sort of freedom can in itself create some sort of gender inequality. Overall, the results provide further evidence that the characteristics of gender inequality phenomenon is true to all countries including those countries who are completely free and who have relatively competitive and advanced economies.
Corpus Planning and Tri-Media Enhancement of Intellectualized Filipino for Mass Communication
Get PDFIn the Philippines, education, history and topography dictated why the medium of communication in many fields including broadcast and print media is English. But when Filipino was constitutionalized in 1987, corpus planning in the national language has given of great importance by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) to intellectualized and create a standardized jargon for mass communication. Though translated lexes were printed in Filipino books and taught in higher education institutions (HEIs.) there is no measure on the usability and acceptability of the lexes. Following Haugen’s and Ferguson’s language planning concepts this paper focused on the utilization importance of the lexes for mass communication as surveyed to students who undergone on-the-job training in different mass media channels. Focus group discussion as well as interview to experts of the fields corroborates facts found. Conclusion of the paper enumerated the lexes need to be revised to adapt with the needs of field: Corpus planning management need to be carefully designed to alleviate the status of the speakers’ own language instead of empowering a foreign language; the use of technology may be employed such as crowdsourcing, use of translation engines and other media platforms as well as word assimilation and adaptation and manual efforts for validation of the harvested and collected lexes; speakers maybe allowed to freely use whatever variety they may utilize to meet better understanding and usability of lexes; lastly, to propagate suggested lexes, language agencies, expert of the fields shall give importance on the production of books, publication of articles and researches on top of the use of Filipino in different fora and the like.
Development of Biogas Scrubber Using Water Purification System
Get PDFBiogas can be used in the production of electricity, for heating and cooking. In compressed form, it can be used to replace compressed natural gas used in vehicles, such that it can fuel an internal combustion engine or fuel cells. Cleaning of gas is necessary to meet the pipeline quality requirement. The composition of the gas must be correct to be accepted by the local distribution network. Carbon dioxide (CO2), moisture, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and particulate matter must be removed if present. This study aimed to develop a biogas scrubber using water purification system. Specifically, the objective was to evaluate the composition of biogas before and after scrubbing in terms of percentage methane (CH4), CO2, Nitrogen (N2), and H2S. The development of the biogas scrubbing machine considered system components and material specifications. After fabrication, preliminary testing was done to establish different parameters such as working pressure and scrubbing time and amount of water needed. The study also evaluated the performance of the biogas scrubber in terms of percentage increase in CH4 and scrubber efficiency. An operation and maintenance manual for the utilization of the biogas scrubber was also prepared. After several trials and testing, the system inlet pressure operated at 4.6 psi. The system could increase CH4 in biogas by approximately 21.67 %. The scrubber efficiency was 68.67 %. It was recommended that further study should be conducted and consultation with experts should be done to improve the design and automate the operation of the system
