Rosas: Kulay at Kilusan (Pink: Color and Movement)
The history of pink as a color is complex. Different groups — such as feminists, breast cancer patients, the LGBTQ+ community, and socialists — have given various interpretations of it before it finally entered the Philippines. In the context of the 2022 presidential election, pink transformed into a movement centered on the candidacy of Leni Robredo. This movement can be labeled the “Color Pink Movement.” Aside from historicizing the politics of the color pink in both global and national contexts, this essay aims to describe the Color Pink Movement by applying the concept of maganda (beauty), which was first comprehensively conceptualized by the theologian Jose de Mesa. Its kagandahang panlabas (outer beauty)—expressed through the arts (poetry, comics, songs, dance, painting, theater, toys, and games)—and its volunteerism are aesthetic manifestations of the ethics of the Color Pink Movement: the kagandahang panloob (inner beauty) of a movement that believes love is the more radical act
Digital Politics: DDS and Political Propagandain the context of Baudrillard’s Hyperreality
Digital media can shape people’s political perspectives as it is used as a medium for communication and information. In the Philippines, the use of Facebook has become an avenue not just for socialization but also, for political discourse. Being considered as one of the world’s top Facebook users, Facebook is used by individuals to serve as a platform to construct propaganda networks. Diehard Duterte Supporters (also known as the “DDS”) use this digital media platform to rally behind President Duterte, promote his achievements, and also, to defend him against criticisms. On the other hand, Jean Baudrillard believes that media plays a pivotal role in constituting a new realm of experience. Baudrillard’s central thesis is that the media serves as a key simulation machine that constitutes a hyperreality. In this paper, the researchers examined how political propagandas is conveyed by selected Die-hard Duterte Supporters (DDS) through Facebook. In light of Jean Baudrillard’s notion of hyperreality, the have elucidated the serious concerns regarding the proliferation of political propaganda in social media. As a result, the researchers claim that Facebook pages are used by the DDS as key simulation tools for framing the contents of their political propaganda to match their political objectives and it is therefore described as, “political framing”. Political framing of information and content is comparable to Baudrillard’s notion of simulation, wherein it involves a judicious process of creating political propaganda which involves filtering, recycling, editing information, selecting content and arguments that ultimately, blurs the distinction between the true information and disinformation, thus, creates hyperreality
Sen and Žižek on the Multiculturalist Approach to Non-Violence
This paper analyzes areas of convergence in the works of Amartya Sen and Slavoj Žižek in their criticisms of the multiculturalist approach to non-violence. First, Žižek’s characterization of the liberal discourse of guilt and fear is presented. Then, Sen’s key ideas on multiculturalism, tolerance, and rational critique are explicated. Next, a synthesis of Sen and Žižek’s notions of universality, freedom, and rationality, as well as of their critical conceptions of globalization and anti-globalization are discussed. Subsequently, Sen and Žižek’s divergences on overcoming violence are examined. Lastly, from integrating Sen and Žižek’s thoughts, key theses are provided on the paradoxical character of the multiculturalist approach to non-violence and on how despite their divergences, both Sen and Žižek propose radical systematic changes and an alternative approach to non-violence characterized by the universals of rationality and genuine freedom
Self-Efficacy as Correlates to Purpose in Life of Secondary Public School Teachers: Basis for a Life Skills Program
Self-efficacy or the belief in one’s ability to succeed plays a major role in determining goal achievement. On a bigger scale, it ultimately affects our purpose in life in that if our level of self-efficacy is low, we may not have the energy and the drive to strive and achieve making us fail in keeping our perspective and purpose.
This study aimed to determine the relationship between self-efficacy and purpose in life of public secondary school teachers during the school year 2017 – 2018. Utilizing the descriptive-correlative method, the researcher sought the participation of ninety – five (95) teachers both from the junior and senior high school departments of the respondent school. Two standardized tests were used to gather data: the Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale and the Purpose in Life Test. The findings revealed that the respondents have a moderately high level of self - efficacy and a slightly high level of purpose in life. Statistical correlation analysis showed that the two concepts under study have a strong direct positive relationship, that is, the higher the self-efficacy, the higher the purpose in life and vice versa. The researcher recommends that those participants who scored “low” and “moderately low” on self-efficacy and those who scored “extremely low” to “slightly low” in purpose in life be encouraged to undergo the Life Skills Program herein proposed. Further, it is recommended that future researchers explore this line of study so as to contribute to the database of knowledge since studies about this subject are extremely rare
KAINGIN AT IBA PANG TULA
The Gap Between the Required Entry-Level Job Experience and the Opportunity for the Freshers in Bangladesh
Proper utilization of human capital is one of the most important issues in the developing economy of a country. The paper investigates the impact of the gap between the required job experience for entry-level and the remaining job opportunity for the freshers of Bangladesh. To conduct the research, participants from different sectors such as students, entry-level, mid-level, and freshers have been chosen for data collection. The collected information was solicited on the current gap between the required entry level job experience and the fresher’s job opportunity in Bangladesh. The performance construct was defined by the term’s effectiveness, required experience level, knowledge gap, current job status, minimum years of required experience, flexibility, the opportunity of getting a job, fresher’s depression level, and unemployment rate. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics. For example, several people from different levels from the job holders to the students have participated here. The data shows a worse contribution of the required level of experience for getting into a job for the freshers. A minimum year of experience is required for getting into the job but on the other hand, freshers are not getting any opportunity to implement their knowledge in the practical field. The absence of opportunity has risen the unemployment rate in Bangladesh. Around 80% of the participants of the survey have admitted that the required level of experience is the main reason for the freshers not getting into the job after completing their graduation (Billett, 2008). A better implementation opportunity of the acquired knowledge is one of the most significant ways of getting out of this problem
The Growing Dissonance between the Kosmos and the Anthropos: A Hermeneutic Study of the Mechanistic World View brought by Classical Physics and the New Rationality introduced by Einstein’s Relativity Theory and Heisenberg’s Indeterminacy Principle in Quantum Physics
This paper centers on the implicit metaphysics beyond the Theory of Relativity and the Principle of Indeterminacy – two revolutionary theories that have changed 20th Century Physics – using the perspective of Husserlian Transcedental Phenomenology. Albert Einstein (1879-1955) and Werner Heisenberg (1901-1976) abolished the theoretical framework of Classical (Galilean-Newtonian) physics that has been complemented, strengthened by Cartesian metaphysics. Rene Descartes (1596-1850) introduced a separation between subject and object (as two different and self- enclosed substances) while Galileo and Newton did the “mathematization” of the world. Newtonian physics, however, had an inexplicable postulate of absolute space and absolute time – a kind of geometrical framework, independent of all matter, for the explication of locality and acceleration. Thus, Cartesian modern metaphysics and Galilean- Newtonian physics go hand in hand, resulting to socio- ethical problems, materialism and environmental destruction. Einstein got rid of the Newtonian absolutes and was able to provide a new foundation for our notions of space and time: the four (4) dimensional space- time; simultaneity and the constancy of velocity of light, and the relativity of all systems of reference. Heisenberg, following the theory of quanta of Max Planck, told us of our inability to know sub- atomic phenomena and thus, blurring the line between the Cartesian separation of object and subject, hence, initiating the crisis of the foundations of Classical Physics.
But the real crisis, according to Edmund Husserl (1859-1930) is that Modern (Classical) Science had “idealized” the world, severing nature from what he calls the Lebenswelt (life- world), the world that is simply there even before it has been reduced to mere mathematical- logical equations. Husserl thus, aims to establish a new science that returns to the “pre- scientific” and “non- mathematized” world of rich and complex phenomena: phenomena as they “appear to human consciousness”
The Role of Intellectuals in Shaping Hegemony,Consent, and Political Emotion
This paper aims to expose the underlying forces which shaped the hegemonic character of the Philippine civil society. The ideas of Gramsci written in his prison notebooks remained relevant even at present, especially in understanding the capitalists’ control of social and political affairs. The state of the Filipino society today mirrors Gramsci’s conception of capitalism and its influences on the political and social affairs. Despite Karl Marx’s prediction of its death, the capitalist class managed to evolve, and it even survived with ethical measures involved. It is here where Gramsci believed that there is a need for the intellectuals to take a stand and form counter-hegemony against the capitalist control. One of the means to achieve a collective hegemony is by gaining consent from all levels of social strata. Doing so will demand an awareness of the political emotion that binds citizens together for them to feel that they belong to one hegemonic group. Thus, this paper tried to analyze in great deal, how capitalism maintains hegemonic control in our civil society and explain at the same time the necessary role of the Filipino intellectuals in forming contradiction in the given economic and political orde
