    Get PDF
Tarlac State University (TSU) is a multi-ethnic and multicultural institution with a student population that is predominated by the Kapampangan, Ilocano, and Tagalog ethnolinguistic groups. This paper is a comparative study of the ethnic stereotypes and self-stereotypes of these three ethnolinguistic groups. Using a modified Katz and Braly trait checklist, this paper was able to: 1)profile the ethnic stereotypes and self-stereotypes of these three ethnolinguistic groups, 2) determine their uniformity indices, 3) determine their positivity/negativity indices, 4) compare and contrast their profiled ethnic stereotypes and self-stereotypes, 5) compare and contrast the uniformity indices of their ethnic stereotypes and self-stereotypes, and 6) compare and contrast the positivity/negativity indices of their ethnic stereotypes and self-stereotypes. This paper was also able to establish that the Kapampangan ethnic stereotype and self-stereotype shared the most number of traits in common, while the Tagalog ethnic stereotype and self-stereotype shared the least number of traits in common. This paper was also able to establish that the uniformity indices of the Kapampangan ethnic stereotype and self-stereotype are closest to each other; while those of the Tagalog ethnic stereotype and self-stereotype are farthest from each other. Finally, this paper was able to establish that the positivity/negativity indices of the Kapampangan and Tagalog ethnic stereotype and self-stereotype are both closest to each other; while those of the Ilocano ethnic stereotype and self-stereotype are farthest to each other. This paper is significant not only in knowing whether there is a difference between how the three ethnolinguistic groups construct each other’s stereotypes and their respective self-stereotypes, but more so in laying down the preliminary information that would lead towards understanding the dynamics among these same ethnolinguistic groups, and towards building a more cohesive student body in TSU, or citizens of Tarlac City, or inhabitants of Tarlac Province. This paper is also important in providing a model study that can be replicated in other multicultural institutions and locations in the country

Any faculty evaluation by students is a good yardstick to measure how effective faculty in delivering classroom duties. The results from this exercise are expected to provide indexes that will guide policy makers and implementers if it is about time to revisit and reassess prevailing practices related to teaching performance. Thus, this study aims to determine the perception of the PUP faculty from branches and campuses about the student’s online evaluation and investigate the implication of results to their performance as teachers in higher education institution. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to interpret data. The researchers utilized primary data through self administered survey questionnaire and secondary data as well. Findings revealed that in general, the faculty find the criteria in four areas of evaluation namely: commitment, knowledge of the subject, teaching for independent learning and management of learning, acceptable. They agree with the rating scale and its equivalent description. The perceived delivery of faculty duties in four areas showed improvement. The faculty recognized that their personal and social development had improved. When respondents were grouped according to highest educational attainment, significant difference was observed on commitment area. Majority of the faculty felt that students do not fully understand the content of the evaluation instrument, and worst, they use it as an opportunity to get even with the professors they dislike. It is therefore recommended to simplify the statements in the instrument to make it more student-comprehensible. To further improve the performance of the faculty, deans and chairpersons may identify administrative concerns of their faculty and address areas that need training, retooling, mentoring, and other forms of intervention as they may see appropriate

Hidden Sacrifices: Narratives of Select Filipina Overseas Workers in Southeast Asia

    No full text
In my essay “Chasing Waves: Reflection on Southeast Asian Fisherfolk (2021a),” I already featured the less documented experience of the socially marginalized. My essay focused on the personal narratives of Bruneian fishermen of Kampor Ayer, Brunei Darussalam (2016); the fishermen of Mui Ne, Vietnam (2017); and the Intha of Myanmar (2018), with whom I had the fortunate chance to converse with. However, my personal travel experience in the three countries only gave voice to “non-Filipino workers.” That is why in this current essay, I will highlight the unique experience of the Filipinos themselves – in the form of migrant workers in Southeast Asia. I have interacted with and interviewed many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Pacific; even in other countries where Filipino tourists were unfamiliar or visited, surprisingly happen to have OFWs. With that, it is unsurprising why Filipinos are articulated as globe-trotting people (Perdon 2014) and quasi-wandering people (San Juan 2009) because of their prevalence in the discourse of the global diaspora. In this essay, I will feature the stories of personal experiences of select  Filipina workers in Southeast Asia, specifically in Malaysia (2014), Singapore (2014), and Cambodia (2017), extracted from my travel narratives from 2014-2018

Effect Of Nitrogen From Different Sources On The Growth And Biomass Production Of Spirulina Platensis (Gomont) Geitler

    Get PDF
Spirulina platensis is a filamentous cyanobacterium known for its promising nutritional value used in several industries. The biomass produced after 24-days cultivation treated with sodium nitrate is significantly higher (0.001 <α0.05) than the cultures treated with urea. Cultures given with nitrogen concentration of 1.648 g/L of sodium nitrate had the highest optical density (5.895 ± 1.095) and dried biomass (2.265 ± 0.390 mg/mL) but not significantly higher with other sodium nitrate treatments (OD: 0.395 > α0.05, DBM: 0.629 >α0.05). The findings suggest that urea is not recommended as an alternative nitrogen source for Spirulina. Results also showed that lower nitrogen concentrations (0.103 g/L) of sodium nitrate can be used to cultivate Spirulina without compromising the biomass production. Moreover, this study showed that the peak of growth rate happens during the 16th day of cultivation

DO NOT GO GENTLE INTO THAT WPS AND OTHER POEMS

My very first regular reading material was Mad Magazine, the foremost satirical publication in the United States. Known for biting commentary about everything, nothing escaped its ridicule, even its own staff. A regular feature in Mad would be song and poem parodies. I admired how the new lyrics could still fit the meter of the original material. So, I started making my own parodies. Up until today, my predilection for parody has never waned. That is why whenever I would write a collection of poems, a piece or two would be parodies. I see poems as commentaries about life and making parodies of poems is like having two commentaries in one, commentary about life and commentary about the poem itself. “Do not go gentle into that WPS” was made to criticize government inaction regarding the West Philippine Sea. Knowing how each fishing trip for our fishermen is like courting death, made me decide to use Dylan Thomas’ “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” as the frame for my piece. Juxtaposing defiance against death and what our fishermen were doing everyday was my intention. I wanted to pay tribute to our brethren who cast their nets every day and also rebuke the government that was supposed to protect them but ends up bending over for Beijing

Development Of An Earthquake Shake Table For The Excitation Analysis And Performance Evaluation Of Structural Models

    Get PDF
The study focuses on the development of an earthquake shake table for data and performance monitoring of a pre-designed structural base isolation system that will pave way to the structure’s improvement of design through simulation of damping motion of the structural model in response to different earthquake magnitudes. The earthquake shake table gathers information on its test subjects by the use of attached structural seismometer sensors to calculate its damping motion and base shears, which are directly inputted to built-in monitoring software. The test subjects used for the experimentation process of the earthquake simulation tableare two high-rise structure models, which were demonstrated with towers constructed with different materials evaluated through Buckingham pi  theorem to replicate the most accurate results of an actual structure’s excitation during an earthquake. The two test subjects differ in their structural foundation, one is structurally base-isolated and the other is conventionally base-attached. The integration to the study of the DPWH guidelines and implementing rules of earthquake recording instrumentation for buildings were the basis of the location of seismometers to the test models to ensure that standard earthquake  recording methods are verified and accurately followed. The results of the working Titan Mk.III prototype features the excitation recordings of the test subjects via the system’s accelerometers attached to the two structural test subjects combined with the magnitude produced by the earthquake shake table. The result of the test differs in the performance of the two test subjects wherein the base isolated-structure performed an average of 38.18% decrease in structural excitation compared to the other. To further improve the accuracy of the structural readings of the prototype, a 3D-rendered monitoring program is proposed to be integrated to Titans’ data recording software to produce more aesthetically and user friendly results. In conclusion, the raw data and results produced by the third generation prototype of the earthquake shake table provides the comparative analysis of the two structures wherein it produces the actual excitation basis of the structural models that underwent certain ground motion simulations through the Titan earthquake shake table

Pagbasa sa Learning from the Filipino Diaspora: Lessons of Resistance and Critical Intervention ni E. San Juan Jr (Book Review: Learning from the Filipino Diaspora: Lessons of Resistance and Critical Intervention of E. San Juan Jr.)

    No full text
The collection of essays from Learning from the Filipino Diaspora: Lessons of Resistance and Critical Intervention by E. San Juan Jr. critically discusses the study of literature through a historical-materialist lens, grounded in the phenomenon of the Filipino diaspora. In this context, a reorientation of Filipino sensibilities emerges regarding each individual’s role in society, emphasizing the need to revisit their historical positioning as members of the Philippine state and community. The author’s critique is a significant contribution because it raises awareness about the conditions faced by Filipino workers abroad—from the past to the present—who leave the country to provide for their families despite the uncertainty and lack of protection against exploitation and abuse overseas. As a large portion of the Filipino population migrates to different parts of the world to work in various service roles, the work directly addresses their function as the government’s “milking cows,” given the remittances that sustain the national economy. In return, they are labeled as “modern-day heroes,” even as reports of abuse, rape, and killings continue to emerge from among their ranks

Bioremediation Activity Of Isolated Chromium-Resistant Bacteria From Estuary Sediments In La Union, Philippines

    Get PDF
Chromium contamination in sediments is contributed by industrialization. Elevated levels of Cr(VI) have crucial effects on living organisms\u27 health and are detrimental to the environment. Bioremediation is an innovative and sustainable way of reducing hazardous substances to lesser ones. In this study, Cr-resistant bacteria were isolated from Maragayap Estuary sediments and its bioremediation activity was assessed. Soil samples were collected from the study site and were serially diluted and grown in Luria-Bertani (LB) medium. Soil microcosm was amended with 60 ppm Cr(VI) and its heavy metal levels were evaluated in four weeks through US EPA 3060A and 7196A. Bacterial isolates were characterized and identified by 16s rRNA gene sequencing and their phylogenetic trees were constructed. Based on heavy metal analyses, Maragayap Estuary was found to be polluted with chromium. Isolates, designated as LG-01 and LG-03, were identified as Staphylococcus sciuri and Bacillus cereus, and LG-02 as the novel bacteria, Bacillus aerius. It was observed that all isolates can tolerate up to 300 ppm of chromium. The two Bacillus species produced putative carotenoids due to heavy metal stress. Results revealed that there was a reduction of Cr(VI), as bioremediation time progresses. The bacterial consortium reduced chromium faster than pure cultures at a rate of 0.8931 ppm/week. Individually, S. sciuri had the highest reduction of 1.65 ppm in four weeks. The results of this study may inform the community on possible human pathogens thriving in estuaries and may provide a possible microbial  source of bioremediation agent to address environmental concerns in the freshwater ecosystem

Paghila pataas. Paghila pasulong

    FOUR POEMS

Apparently, the short collection selected by Entrada embodies the lyrical finesse, structural fragmentations, as well as the metaphors and unpredictable associations of Paul Celan. Threadsuns, Poppy and Memory, and Glottal Stop: 101 Poems are my favorite collections of his. My personal pick is “Death of Fugue” which is a poem that exhibits dexterity and disguise. I love how these two elements engage themselves in a play, in a war of words and ideas. This is how my poetry works, and this is how I fell in love with Celan’s poetry. Such lines as “Black milk of daybreak we drink it at nightfall” and “Your hands full of hours” are immortal. I also think that Michael Hamburger did an impeccable job in translating Celan’s poetic text from the original Romanian. And that’s Paul Celan: he certainly has a spot in my Mt. Rushmore of World Surrealist Poets. As regards the linguistic approach emanating from my body of work, I certainly write my poems in English, but the conscious play of ‘code- switching’ can be an effective poetic device. This is how exophonic poets articulate their own form of rhetorical protest. As a Filipino poet writing in English, the art of poetic code-switching allows me to play with language and embrace the Asian American identity in my writing. My inspiration for this kind of poetic practice, therefore, was the Korean American poet, Cathy Park Hong. Her “All the Aphrodisiacs”, for example, retains the cultural intimacy within the Asian American cultural community
