Issues and Concerns of LGBTQ+ Community in the Context of the Academe: Bases for Policy Formulation in the University
The main objective of this research was to assess the issues and perceptions concerning the welfare of LGBTQ+ community at the Bulacan State University. Many studies had been done to address the problems among LGBTQ+ community, however, there are only a few studies who promoted policies and programs for the development of LGBTQ+ students. Meanwhile, the study is anchored in Self-Identity Theory which was based on groups being an important source of pride and self-esteem for individuals. Descriptive case study method was utilized in the study and interview was used as a technique in data gathering. In addition, there were six self-confessed LGBTQ+ students who served as participants in the study. The results revealed the LGBTQ+ students of Bulacan State University were experiencing discrimination and harassment from heterosexual students, staff, and administrators at the university. Also, it was found out that the university lacks programs, policies, and measures in catering the welfare of LGBTQ+ students. In conclusion, the university’s existing programs and policies about LGBTQ+ students should be revisited for the better understanding of the students, staff, administrators, and the university regarding the issues and concerns that LGBTQ+ students were facing.
Muslim-Christian Goodness of Life as a Philosophical Perspective
Being Filipinos delving into philosophical discussions necessitates expanding the majority Christian viewpoint that crosses religious affiliation into the Muslim viewpoint as well. In Mindanao, particularly where Filipinos are a blending of Muslims, Christians, various Indigenous People’s communities, and mestizos of genetic and/or cultural hybridity of human identification even extend to various others for further consideration while in the paper the focus is on Muslim-Christian understanding of the notion of goodness of life. Philosophizing in this locality can expand the horizon of Filipinos who philosophize outside of Mindanao. A philosophical perspective needs to understand the ongoing blending of the Muslim and the Christian. Their practices manifest meaning of goodness of life as in their articles of faith, iman in Islam for existence of Allah and life after death, while the Decalogue and sacrament-generated reaching out to neighbors in Christianity may find differences, and yet philosophically bridging similar good aspirations, as supported by the philosophical stance of Emmanuel Levinas exploring the summons on the being of the ‘I’ towards the other for pursuing originary goodness. Similar notions of a creator god emulated in living out love and mercy build up valuing primordial goodness of life itself so that the differently religious other’s life is inviolable. Philosophizing in both religions as expressed in their major tenets deduces the rational human recognized in the other that brings about a philosophical perspective for the Filipinos that leads to averting violence by bringing about peace

Land-Based Employment Agencies as Modern Brokers: A Study on the Recruitment Strategies for Overseas Filipino Workers
This study is focused on identifying the recruitment practices of land-based employment agencies in the Philippines. It employed a qualitative research design, particularly the case study approach. Data collection techniques include key-informant interviews and in-depth interviews, with a total of 30 participants selected through chain referral sampling. Results showed three general types of recruitment strategies, namely: (1) Applicant initiated recruitment strategy; (2) Employment agency-initiated recruitment strategy; and (3) Government initiated recruitment strategy. For the applicant-initiated recruitment strategy, walk-in was the only identified recruitment practice. For the employment agency-initiated recruitment strategies, the common recruitment practices were computer mediated recruitment, print-related recruitment, location-based recruitment, and referral-dependent recruitment. Lastly, for the government initiated recruitment strategy, job fair was the common recruitment practice. The best utilized and least effective methods of recruitment by employment agencies for each worker category recruited were identified and discussed
Durkheim Revisited: Possible Contribution to the Understanding of Gramsci’s Notion of Hegemony
The paper attempts to explore the possibility of using Durkheim to understand the Gramscian notion of hegemony building on the claim that Gramsci’s idea is fragmentary and contentious. Durkheim’s concepts such as social solidarity, integration, rites and collective conscience the paper argues maybe deployed to comprehend Gramsci’s notion of hegemony particularly consent generation. The paper also contends that Durkheim’s ideas on the state and secondary groups voluntary organizations (civil society) may be helpful in explaining the Gramscian concept of consent building. In effect, the paper also tries to demonstrate that sociological positions that are viewed as rivals can complement each other. Sociologists should do more explorations in areas of convergence rather than divergence of sociological positions

Visualizing Community: Images of Poverty in aPhilippine Rural Community
The study zeroed in on the perception of college students who are exposed to sights of poverty in their immediate environment. The student-participants were asked to provide their perception, understanding, and behaviour towards poverty using the photographs that they took on their own. In qualitative research practice, this methodology is called photo elicitation. It was revealed, among others, that the participants have shown negative perceptions about poverty. They strongly felt bad about each photograph that they took and what these images portrayed. The participants visualized their community and thereby weaved analyses and opinions that encroached on various philosophical and sociological theories. There are four interrelated dominant images that were drawn: exteriority image, dirt-poor image, victim-blaming image, and hand-to-mouth image
Foucault and Beyond: From Sovereignty Powerto Contemporary Biopolitics
In this paper, I will provide an interpretation of Foucauldian theoretical understanding on natures of power from sovereign power to biopolitics. In order to give further depth and texture to what he means by biopolitics, I will attempt to connect biopolitics with his earlier work Discipline and Punish. The term ‘biopolitics’ was actually mentioned by Foucault on the last chapter of his History of Sexuality Volume 1: An Introduction, where he also claimed it as a technology of power linked to biopower. Foucault wrote that the highest function of biopolitics is not to kill, but to invest life through and through in the machineries of production. If that is the case, then, biopolitics aims to ensure the longevity, health, and wellness of the social bodies. However, if biopolitics is the politics that safeguard life, how come that the innumerable individuals are situated in dire condition? To answer this question, the work of Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt will be used to understand further the nature of biopolitics and its effects in the social terrain specially in the contemporary society
The Flipped Classroom and Students’ Achievement in Grammar
Following recent advances in educational technology-integrated learning, language education authorities are becoming more and more interested in the actual implementation of flipped classrooms as cutting-edge strategies. This study investigated the impact of flipped classroom on students’ achievement in grammar of Grade 10 Students of Concordia College for SY 2018 – 2019. Non- equivalent group design, a true – experimental method was employed in this study. The respondents’ average grade in English from the first to the third quarter was considered to establish comparability. Each group took the pretest and posttests. However, only one group employed a flipped classroom as a teaching-learning strategy. Statistical tools employed were Average Weighted Mean (AWM) and T– test.
Major findings revealed that the pretest scores of both experimental and control groups were higher than the 50% passing rate. However, the scores were still under the Approaching Proficiency Level based on DepEd Memo No.8 s of 2015. Pretest scores also showed the two groups had almost the same level of grammar proficiency. It was noted that the pretest scores of the control group were higher than the scores of the experimental group. Post test scores of both groups had increased after the intervention which denoted that traditional and flipped classroom were effective in teaching grammar. It also revealed that the experimental group scores were higher than that of the control group. Further, there was no significant difference between the pretest scores of the control and experimental groups. This meant that the control and experimental groups’ achievement in grammar was equal before the implementation of the intervention. The post test scores of the two groups revealed that there was no significant difference between the posttest scores. This indicated that both groups had improved their grammar achievement; however, it would not imply that the achievement of the experimental group is higher than the control group
