Predicting Antenatal Care Utilization in the Philippines: A Chi-Squared Automatic Interaction Detector Analysis

    Get PDF
Complications associated with pregnancy and childbirth are still considered as leading causes of deaths in the reproductive age group of women in many developing countries. This problem may be addressed when pregnant women utilize antenatal care services. However, despite the benefits of this service to the mother and child, it is not fully utilized in the Philippines. Using the 2013 National Demographic and Health Survey, an exhaustive chi-squared automatic interaction detector model- a data mining approach was employed to analyze the predictors of antenatal care (ANC) utilization of reproductive women age 15 to 49 in the Philippines. Findings reveal that the most significant predictor of ANC utilization was the region where a woman resides. Women who were living in NCR, CAR, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, Bicol, Western and Central Visayas, Davao and Caraga had the highest likelihood of utilizing ANC than those who lived in MIMAROPA, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga, Northern Mindanao and SOCCSKSARGEN with the lowest in ARRM. The second most influential factor is the woman’s religious affiliation. If a woman is a Muslim, her utilization is lower than a Christian, regardless of what her socio-economic status is or in what wealth quintile she belongs. The result further shows that wealth quintile and educational attainment are also significant predictors. Policy makers and health providers should intensify their efforts to address differentials between these groups of women and to widen the campaign of at least four antenatal visits during pregnancy as a requirement in all parts of the country

Deleuze’s Nietzsche: Life, Critique, and Difference

    Get PDF
In this article, I re-visit and navigate Nietzsche’s concepts of genealogy, will to power, and the eternal return through the lens of Gilles Deleuze’s philosophy. Nietzschean philosophy occupies a significant part in the preliminary blueprints of Deleuze’s philosophy of difference, which relatively encompasses even his collaborative scholarship with Guattari. Hence, this research likewise diagrams some critical affinities between Nietzsche and Deleuze, in conjunction with other contemporary thinkers and issues. My disquisition of the aphorism as a philosophical style and genealogy grounds my engagement with the principles of will to power and the eternal return. Through the evaluative aptitude of the will to power and the differential and ethical powers of the eternal return, genealogy transforms into a philosophical device of critique, diagnosis, and creation. Genealogy criticizes and undermines all dogmatic images of thought; it diagnoses values, forces, and relations; and, it engenders new modes of thinking and living, or what Deleuze and Guattari would later call the world-to- come

    TAGULAYLAY

Nussbaum: The Importance of Storytelling and Engendering Compassion for Today’s Political Life

    Get PDF
Nussbaum’s Upheavals of Thought: The Intelligence of Emotions addresses the importance of compassion in social and political practices, in the face of a rather emotionless (and hence, fragmented and reductionistic) Western political mindset. But rather than crude emotion driven by waywardness and directionless thinking, the compassion she suggests is likened to a reasonable political psychology, which is a sort of empowerment for individuals—it opens avenues for understanding the vulnerabilities even of the most marginalized sectors of the society, therefore, rather than hating them for being the way they are, we can be sympathetic about, say, the external economic and institutional causes that deprive them and that disallow them from achieving their potentials. Without doubt, as demonstrated by the paper, Western history and even our local (Philippine) history is filled  with examples about administering populations without compassion, and perhaps Nussbaum’s philosophy has a special insight about how to deal with this problem

    QTL

The Politics of Pandemic: Covid-Mitigating Response among 1st Time Mayors from Dynastic and Non-dynastic Families in the Philippines

    Get PDF
The study assessed the implementation of different mitigation programs imposed by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) thru their guidelines and the initiatives spearheaded by first-time mayors with dynastic or non dynastic backgrounds during the surge of the pandemic. Similarly, variance analysis was conducted to determine whether there is a significant difference between the total number of COVID-19-positive cases, deaths, and recovery rates in their localities. Secondary data were collected from online news articles, government websites, and through the social media platforms of municipalities/cities, as well as the personal accounts of the mayors themselves. The following conclusions were made: There is no substantial causal relationship between the familial background of the mayor and the increase or decrease of COVID-19 cases in their respective localities; there is no significant difference in the implementation of programs imposed by the national government to the mayors with dynastic/non-dynastic backgrounds; and in terms of pandemic governance and leadership, it is crucial to think beyond the stereotypical beliefs related to political dynasties

Interrogating Mao and Locating the Philippine Left’s Position within Mao’s Protracted War Theory: A Politico-Military Critique

    Get PDF
As the Mainstream Left continues to wage a ferocious civil war against the Philippine state for more than half a century since 1969, it is ironic that it now finds itself in a position of relative political stasis. Such a situation could be characterized by the Left’s inability to carry forward its revolution and advance militarily its forces to higher stages of its adopted strategy and tactics called the People’s Protracted War (PPW). There is certainly a myriad of causes of this stasis owing to the ideological, political, organizational, and military positions which the Left has taken as strategic and tactical responses to national and international challenges at certain historical junctures. Yet, one aspect that baffles independent Marxist thinkers and onlookers of the Left and even challenges them to undertake a cursory review— is it’s steadfast insistence on, and recalcitrance to review the validity and applicability of PPW in the Philippine revolution. The paper seeks to dissect PPW’s applicability to the Philippine concrete situation and navigate the readers on how the Left has applied this to its revolutionary struggle. Although the review is culled on a primarily military perspective contraposed with the Left’s fundamental founding documents, the results may offer some explanations on why the Left today is in a political impasse

Capitalism and the Future of Schizoids: A Brief Typology

    Get PDF
In late capitalism what could be a necessary polarization of libidinal investments for critically understanding social formations arguably no longer demarcates and/or differentiates, hence, depriving subjects of intuitive capacities, of the ‘joy of difference’. But what strikes us here is the junction between these capacities for composition starting with intuitive recomposition of pre-individuating intensities into inherent expressions of new images of thought that can counter-effectuate dogmatic images of thought (state-philosophy, for instance, but also dominant moral opinions) and the realm of the preconscious (that is, of class interests which precede individuations of subjects and their emergence into subject-groups); the junction being, as Deleuze and Guattari argue, the machinist processes upon which social formations are built as negotiated fields of libidinal investments. It is here that the proper goal of schizoanalysis is to map out the lines of flight where deterritorializations of flows tend to obscure the critical awareness of the social nature of desiring production

Glass Ceiling and the Aspirations of Lady CPAs in Public and Private Organizations

    Get PDF
This feminist qualitative research that made use of exponential non-discriminative snow-ball sampling was conducted using “open-ended questions on questionnaire” to explore the deeper insights of women Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) in private and public offices. The themes that emerged from the data collected include: 1) confidentiality in pay that reduces transparency in determining level in the organizational hierarchy, 2) confidence and assertiveness of lady CPAs could contribute to professional skepticism which is crucial in detecting fraud and errors, and 3) flexible working hours not enjoyed. It was also confirmed that programs and policies for the well-being of women employees are available and in place, both in private and public organizations. Another issue that emerged is that the theory of glass ceiling still exists after a long time since it was first introduced. Aspirations and dreams of lady CPAs are varied, ranging from trivial to significant. The significant aspirations include hopes for gender and leadership diversity, mentoring, and mobility
