A Critical Discourse Analysis of Rodrigo Duterte’s Language on Endo and Labor Unionism
Rodrigo Duterte, back in his presidential campaign in 2016, promised to end endo or contractualization. It is a labor practice in the Philippines where companies temporarily employ workers not exceeding six months otherwiseregularization comes that obligates employers to pay workers’ benefits. With less than a year remaining in his term as president, endo continues affecting millions of Filipino workers as ending it is no longer a priority of his government. Since taking power, Duterte gave numerous speeches and interviews on some labor issues, such as endo and unionism. Interestingly, his perspective had shifted significantly from being a working class hero to a status quo defender characterized by his red-tagging of labor unions that he sees as communist ‘fronts’ and his refusal to end endo to seek a so-called balance between labor and capital. In this study, I considered the spoken and written discourse of Duterte on contractualization and unionism which can be found online in the websites of different news agencies and the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO). The text and talk then were analyzed through the lenses of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), specifically the socio-cognitive approach by Teun van Dijk. The results show that Duterte’s discourse on labor issues exemplifies power and ideology and reinforces social representations against labor unionism
Ang Pagdalumat ng Bentahan sa Navotas Fish Port Complex Upang Masipat ang Kalagayan ng Pangingisda sa Pilipinas
The fishing problem in the Philippines increases due to the political mismanagement of the government. This paper analyzed the condition of selling in Navotas Fish Port Complex in the light of weather, industry, and the Covid-19 pandemic. The aim was developed based on the three objectives: (1) the period in which the average number of imported and sold fish, (2) the importation of fish based on volume, classification, and import/export, (3) the set price based on the supply and demand of fish imported. The study used socio-economics as a theory to understand the people’s behavior in selling fish to meet the income and contribute to the economy. The study revealed that the government controls fisheries because standards need to be accomplished before finding and importing the fishing food. In addition, it has been explained that the imported fish decreased in the NFPC due to the problems in fishing, unforeseen disasters, and the impact of the current pandemic. As a result, it affected the price of fish in the market and other stores. But mostly, the fishermen and people involved in selling are the ones who sacrifice the most because the government’s solution focuses on importing fish to other countries. In the end, the people should be aware of the volume of selling so that they can adjust to the system, while the government should implement a platform to help the fishing economy in the Philippines
A Hegelian Approach to Environmental Philosophy
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel has been known as one of the philosophers that does not promote environmentalism as most of his works were focused on Nature vis-à-vis Spirit implies anthropocentrism. Hegel was considered a champion of the unqualified industrial exploitation of nature. But recently, researchers deemed that Hegel’s philosophy can accommodate the problems related to environmental philosophy. Hence, this paper will focus on the potentiality of Hegel’s use in Environmentalism, in agreement with Nicholas Mowad’s work The Natural World Spirit : Hegel on the Value of Nature (2012), Alison Stone’s work Petrified Intelligence (2005), and Wendell Kisner’s work The Category of Life, Mechanistic Reduction, and the Uniqueness of Biology (2008). This paper agrees that there are only limited things to which anthropocentrism can be applied in nature and that there is still some essence of nature into which we can know and are true, not being influenced by human phenomena. Thus, the paper holds that it is the concept of Consciousness holds the key to how we can aid environmentalism through Hegel, with our capability of knowing the true nature of the environment, we can then help with aiding the environmental crisis
Influence of Nitrogen Concentration on the C-Phycocyanin production of Spirulina platensis (Gomont) Geitler
Spirulina platensis is a filamentous cyanobacterium that is widely used as a functional food due to its high nutritional value. A 24-day cultivation of S. platensis was conducted to assess the influence of varying nitrogen concentration in the production of C-phycocyanin (CPC). The CPC concentration, yield and purity were determined. The result showed that the CPC concentration and yield were highest at day 20 with 0.446 ± 0.057 mg/mL and 293.56 ± 78.33 mg/g, respectively. The purity of CPC extracted was highest at day 16 and considered as food grade with purity value from 0.78 to 0.97. This study showed high biomass productivity on nitrogen source
PARALAWOD AT IBA PANG DAGLI
Quality of life of Non-Permanent Teachers and Their Coping Strategies During the Covid-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in tremendous challenges. Education is among the most affected social sectors. Teachers and students are compelled to adapt to the alternative modes of teaching and learning delivery. The Philippines’ largest Higher Education Institution in terms of students became the focus of this study, particularly its non-permanent teaching staff. This research is designed to determine the quality of life and coping strategies of non-permanent teachers of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using mixed methods – sequential explanatory research design, 278 respondents were selected out of the 1,926 total population. Quantitative data were collected through the use of the World Health Organization’s Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) Scale and the Filipino Coping Strategies Scale (FCSS) and were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. Meanwhile, qualitative data were collected through a validated and pilot-tested focus group discussion (FGD) guide with transcripts subjected to content analysis. Data revealed that the lowest dimension of quality of life of the teachers is the physical aspect. Some of the most common coping strategies were cognitive reappraisal, problem solving, religiosity, and relaxation. The respondents differ in terms of religiosity, relaxation, emotional release, and overactivity along with their age, other sources of income, and marital status. Further analysis indicated a relationship between the four domains of quality of life and some types of coping strategies which showed how the quality of life is affected by specific coping practices. Recommendations as to policies and programs to address the issues identified were set.
