    Get PDF
Macrofungi are important decomposers abundant in forested areas around the world. However, its diversity and seasonality are poorly known in the Philippines. Isabela province is located at the northern part of the Philippines. It is mainly part of the Cagayan Valley region which has wide varieties of living organisms due to its climatical and geographical conditions. Among universities and local colleges in the province, Isabela State University, particularly the Echague Campus (ISU-E), caters the vast agricultural and forest land. This research aimed to enlist the macrofungal species and their seasonality in the campus of ISU-E. Lists of macrofungal species were compared between dry seasons (March-August 2020) and wet season (September 2020 – February 2021). Macrofungal samples were characterized and identified based on their morphology. A total of 31 species belonged to 15 families and 20 genera during the dry season, while 43 species were collected and identified to 19 families and 32 genera during the wet season. The family Polyporaceae had the highest number of species during both seasons. The present study is the first to record the list of macroscopic fungi present in Isabela State University as affected by the change of seasons

ANG HABI NG HININGA AT IBA PANG TULA

Marso 2020, nagbago ang buong mundo. Dumating ang pandemya ng Covid. Walang nakapaghanda.

Filipinos’ Framed Faces: Comparative Study of the Filipino Stereotypes as Perceived by the Cebuano and Waray Students of an Agricultural State Universityin Baybay City, Leyte, Philippines

    Get PDF
Visayas State University (VSU) is a leading agricultural state university in Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines. It is a multi-ethnic and multicultural institution where most of its student population belongs to two major ethnolinguistic groups, namely the Cebuano and Waray. This paper is a comparative study of the perception of these two ethnolinguistic groups about Filipino stereotypes using the modified Katz and Braly (1933) trait checklist. With the purpose of providing baseline data for ethnolinguistic stereotypes of a melting-pot institution in this specific region in the Philippines, the researchers hope that this study will eventually help build a more united population of VSU, citizens of the City of Baybay, and those living in the Province of Leyte (Toring et al., 2019). The ultimate aim of this paper is to preliminarily present some dimensions of ethnolinguistic stereotypes of Cebuano and Waray Leyteños, not in a sense of exposing the respondents or the University to social discrimination, but to suggest some aspects which can help cultural studies scholars and local studies centers in discerning the dynamics among the said ethnolinguistic groups. This paper is also significant in giving a benchmark paper that can be useful to other multicultural institutions and locations in the Philippines. This research sheds light on how students in the peripheral region of the  archipelago participate in the crafting of the “Filipino” identity.

Correlates of Fast Food Consumption to Obesity: The Case of Bulacan State University Students

    Get PDF
The wide spread of fast-food and unhealthy food can contribute to the rising of overweight adolescence Filipinos. The World Health Organization (WHO) is now working with the country’s National Nutrition Council (NNC) for the development of an action plan against obesity. This study examined the correlation of fast food consumption to obesity: the case of Bulacan State University. Specifically, this study investigated the fast food eating habits, types of meals usually eaten, factors that lead to obesity, and the relationship of fast food consumption to obesity. This study hypothesized that the fast food eating habits have significant relationship to obesity. The researcher selected 352 purposively selected (based on body size perception) overweight respondents and a survey questionnaire was personally administered to them. The respondents’ characteristics were described with the use of Body Mass Index (BMI), frequency and percentage distribution, mean, standard deviation. Correlation was used to analyze the data. Most of the respondents are 18 years old, female, with one hundred pesos above for their food allowance. The body mass index showed that some of the overweight respondents are not obese. The findings of this study indicated that there is no correlation between eating habits and factors leading to obesity. However, there is a correlation on daily exercise, genetic susceptibility, and emotional state. There is no significant relationship between fast food consumption and obesity.

String Efficiency Analysis of 132-kV High Suspension Insulators Using 2D Finite Element Method Magnetics

    Get PDF
Suspension insulator is needed to prevent leakage current flow to earth through the support tower in high voltage transmission. However, the potential distribution and electric field across each insulator in a string is non-uniform, which causes flash over and excessive heat that shortens the lifespan of the insulators and lowers string efficiency. The potential difference at the bottom unit is inversely proportional to string efficiency. A higher string efficiency, which can be attained using capacitance grading, assures a longer lifespan of the insulator. The purpose of this paper is to study the voltage distribution and string efficiency of a 12-disc glass suspension insulator (model LXWP4-70) at 132 kV using 2D Finite Element Method Magnetics (2D FEMM) software with and without capacitance grading method. The 2D FEMM was used to determine the potential distribution as well as the static capacitance of each string insulator and to calculate the string efficiency. One of the string insulator disc dimensions was measured at the High Voltage Lab of the University Malaya. The results showed that the string efficiency has improved from 64% to 76% due to capacitance grading

Reporma Sa Pera: Ilang Pagmumuni-Muni Sa Utang, Stock Market, At Kapitalismo

Experiences of suicide ideation and attempts among Filipino students: Prevalence, reasons, and help-seeking behavior

    Get PDF
This study sought to determine the prevalence of suicide ideation and attempts among Filipino undergraduate students before and during the pandemic. It also sought to determine the reasons as well as the help seeking behavior of the aforesaid students and find out if there are significant relationships between their socio-economic characteristics and their suicide-related behaviors. Data were obtained through a survey questionnaire (n=308) and were analyzed through descriptive statistics and Spearman Rho correlational tests. Findings showed that majority of the respondents have thought or made plans about suicide at least once. Meanwhile, 2 out of every 10 respondents coming from a predominantly richer university has attempted suicide while 4 out of every 10 from a predominantly poorer university did the same. Most of the suicide ideators thought of suicide before and during the pandemic while suicide attempts were more common before the pandemic. Most of those who experienced suicide ideation and/or attempts did not seek any form of help during the ordeal and, for those who did, the help was sought from friends instead of mental health professionals and suicide hotlines. The study also found that family problems were the most common reason for suicide before the pandemic and academic problems were the most common during the pandemic, albeit there was an observed rise in suicide ideations and/or attempts due to financial problems as well. Finally, correlational tests found that males, the religious, and the rich tend to engage in less suicide-related behaviors while the opposite was observed among LGBT student
