Angat Buhay Lahat? A Review on the State of Philippine Politics and the Frame of Democracy during the 2022 Philippine National Elections
The 1987 Philippine Constitution describes the Philippines as a “democratic and republican State”. The same constitution upheld sovereignty of the country resides in the Filipino people and such that the government authority emanates from them. This provision clearly describes how democracy should work in the Philippines. However, election-related violence and vote buying are still happening around the country. These incidences are backed up by various theories about how democracy is operated in the Philippines such as elite democracy, patron-client framework andutang na loob. These two concepts may be the reason why political dynasties exist in the country, which leads to the weakening of the Philippine state. However, during the 2022 National and Local Elections, two aspirant leaders – then Vice President Leni Robredo and Senator Kiko Pangilinan – changed the perspective of how democracy in the Philippines operates due to the unusual way of campaigning by their supporters. The supporters wanted change from the previous Duterte administration especially from controversial issues such as the War on Drugs and handling the COVID-19 Pandemic. The mammoth crowd of supporters around the country who led and attended their so-called “people’s rally” was called a Pink Movement from supporters within and outside the Philippines. The campaign penetrates all levels of active participation – personally participative, participative, and justice-oriented. However, the results of the National Elections disappointed a lot of her supporters, as Robredo lost against Bongbong Marcos, son of dictator Ferdinand Marcos. But the launching of her new non-governmental organization, Angat Buhay, redirected the energy of her supporters in running the program
Influence of salinity in fatty acid production of Dunaliella sp. as feedstock for biodiesel
Dunaliella sp. is a unicellular, eukaryotic, photosynthetic, and halophilic microalga. It is one of the prospective microalgae being utilized for its significant amounts of valuable chemical matters such as carotenoid, glycerol, and lipids. Dunaliella has a potential as feedstock in the production of biodiesel but there is only limited data and information available as most studies are focused to commercial production of highvalue products such as beta-carotene. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the culture condition of Dunaliella sp. that promotes higher lipid production. Dunaliella sp. was cultivated at varying salinity conditions (45 g/L, 50 g/L, 55 g/L, 60 g/L, 65 g/L, and 70 g/L) using Conway medium (CM). Algal biomass for each culture condition was harvested at the end of logarithmic phase [Period 1 (P1) or day 10] and onset of decline phase [Period 2 (P2) or day 13] of cultivation. At P1, the highest biomass was obtained from CM50 (1.152 ± 0.120 g/L) while CM45 (2.109 ± 0.168 g/L) for P2. Lipid/oil was extracted from algal biomass cultivated at different salinity concentrations by Bligh and Dyer method using solvent mixture of chloroform and methanol (1:2). CM60 has the highest oil yield in both periods, P1 (1.494 ± 0.190 %) and in P2 (1.636 ± 0.173%). Lipid/Oil from top three (3) oil producing treatments were transesterified to produce the Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) and subjected to Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) for fatty acid composition analysis. There are 22 fatty acids identified in P1 while 28 fatty acids in P2. However, only 11 fatty acids identified in all treatments were desirable for biodiesel production namely myristic acid, methyl entadecanoate acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, palmitoleic acid, methyl palmitoleate acid, valeric acid, elaidic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid, and petroselinic acid. Among algal cultures, only CM55 exhibited ideal mix ratio of fatty acid’s palmitoleic (16:1), oleic acid (18:1), and myristic acid (14:0) with good biodiesel property (5:3:1). Therefore, Dunaliella sp. has a potential as feedstock for biodiesel production with decent amount biomass and lipid/oil using Conway medium that can also exhibit good fuel properties when cultivated at 55g/L of salinity
Representasyon ng Kababaihang Manggagawang Pilipino sa Europa Batay sa Pelikulang Pag-ibig na Milan (2004) at Barcelona (2016) ni Olivia Lamasan
Every Filipino worker’s dream is to set foot and earn their living overseas - Europe is one of them. The high value of its currency - the Euro, provides comfort, support, and stability for migrant Filipinos and their families. Europe also offers the ideal lifestyle and picturesque landscapes that draw Filipino migrant workers to settle and do whatever it takes to get there. From this phenomenon, is this the formation of the ideal Filipino mindset of the European Dream? We can infer this from blockbuster movie representations that took place in Europe. In relation to this paper are films produced and directed by Olivia Lamasan, specifically Milan (2004) and Barcelona (2016), that showcase and are centered in Italy and Spain - countries with the largest concentration of Filipinos residing in Europe. Both Milan and Barcelona exemplify their characters and dialogues. Their entire cinematography delineates the image of the Philippine society that dreams, struggles, and aspires to achieve ginhawa (comfort) in Europe as the land of opportunitie
Ang Fast food Crew sa Mabilis na Globalisasyon: Naratibo ng mga Manggagawang “Hindi Laging Bida ang Saya”
Fast food chains, particularly the shared experiences of its working service crews, take part on labor discourses in relation to the rapid growth and demands of globalization. Despite the positive views on its effects, several social science experts also view that such global phenomenon has negative impacts on the socio-economic and cultural facets of developing countries – in which a numerous citizens tend to not reognize due to its economic opportunities. This paper discusses various shared experiences of selected fast food crews related to their work situations in working spaces explicitly affected by neoliberal globalization – fast food chains. From the data gathered through informal conversations and interviews with 17 key informants, this study thematized a number of significant resembling experiences that they face as service crews associated with the ‘fast, instant, and/or rapid’ attribute of globalization: (1) self and familial economic needs is the primary reason of students to work as fast food crews while studying; (2) the exploitative system of regularization is apparent in the industry and should be addressed; (3) due to the long time spent working in the store and in school, student-service crews’ social relationships especially with the family are also significantly affected; (4) underestimating fast food crews as workers is observed in Philippine society; (5) fast food crews’ minimum wage is not competitive despite the all-around work; and (6) the designation of tasks in a store according to sex and age of fast food crews is a common practice amongst fast food chains. These shared experiences among Filipino service crews – or several other labor forces in Third World countries – are believed to be paralleled to the continuous implications of globalization
Repleksiyon hinggil sa Neokolonyang Edukasyon: Neoliberalismong Indoktrinasyon Laban sa Mapagpalayang Pagtuturo at Kabatiran (REFLECTIONS ON NEOCOLONIAL EDUCATION: Neoliberal Indoctrination against Liberating Pedagogy and Knowledge)
Contextualized in the history of U.S. colonization of the Philippines, the current educational system that sustains the subjugation of the dominated stems from the white-supremacist ideology of pacification institutionalized throughout the dependent formation. Key here is the imposition of the colonizer’s language. With the cooptation of the feudal oligarchy, the colonial state apparatus promoted individualist-consumerist disposition and careerism. This coalesced with the inherited client-patron pattern prevailing in the countryside. This subservience of Filipino minds and bodies continues with the return of U.S. military bases and the reenforcement of a comprador-subaltern sense of inferiority, alongside a resurgence of national-popular resistance. Contradictions within the imperial hegemony have allowed the rise of critical pedagogy in the middle stratum that may challenge neoliberal norms, given the intensifying crisis of U.S. capitalism and the challenge of China and other third-world revolutionary movements
Revisiting a Flag Salute Case: The Law of the State as Opposed to the Right of Minority
The state as an agent responsible to secure social order is oftentimes given high regard by its citizens based on the premise that it can also guarantee protection of rights through the formulation of laws that set legal boundaries in safeguarding the interests of the people. The state is the actual reality of an ethical idea according to some philosophers, like Hegel, because it is created with a noble purpose of upholding the common good of its subjects, the essence of which is to secure happiness and safety for all. Conflicts may, however, arise in occasions where individual rights run counter with the policies of the land. This is the focus of this study; on the one hand, an intriguing exposition on the exercise of religious freedom of a minority group, and on the other, its conflict with the legal policies promoting a conceived general welfare for the country.
Precolonial Traditions and Practices of the Agta in San Mariano, Isabela
The study aimed to record the precolonial traditions and practices on the life cycle of the Agta in Sitio Diwagdan, San Jose, San Mariano, Isabela relative to conception, child birth, child rearing, courtship, marriage, and death and burial; also to document how the Agta observe their precolonial traditions and practices along the following dimensions of life: social organization, religious practice, economic, politics, and education. Based from the discussions made and findings of the study, it can be concluded that the Agta have rich precolonial traditions and practices on life cycle relative to conception, childbirth, child rearing, courtship, marriage, and death and burial. They have limited social environment; they are animistic and open to other religious sects; they depend on hand to mouth subsistence as they rely much on rattan resources in the forest as the major source of their livelihood; the Agta political system is limited to their tribe in which they do not involve themselves in politics at the barangay level; and education for the Agta children is the least priority of the Agta parent
Suri-Politikal: Mga Ideolohiyang Politikalng Kaliwang Panel ng Obrang Filipino Struggles through History ni Botong
Even without an exact photograph taken from every scene of history, it was still successfully displayed by art like the famous mural, “Filipino Struggles Through History.” The Filipino Struggles Through History by renowned artist Carlos “Botong” Francisco, is composed of four panels and each panel contains historical scenes from different periods. From the four panels, the researchers analyzed the left panel focusing on the experience and situation of the country from the pre-colonial period to the central part of the 19th-century Spanish conquest. The researchers used Barthes’ semiology and Hans Slomp’s political ideology which was modified by F.P.A Demetrio in analyzing the political ideology of the left panel. Through the study, it was identified that a variety of signs and symbols reflect the reality of society at a time. The study also found that the dominant ideology of sections on the left panel was moderate. If Botong wants to bring his art specifically to ordinary Filipinos, it is important to see political ideology because it allows a deep understanding of history and a guide to a high regard for identity as Filipino
