    RENTA

    Get PDF

Apprehending the Instability and Divergence in Philippine Jurisprudence via Feminist Theories of Public Emotion and Standpoint

    Get PDF
Instability and divergence in the decisions rendered by courts of justice are typically accepted with reservations. To better understand this episode of variance, the paper set out to explore how the exercise of judicial discretioncontributes to the unpredictability and conflict in jurisprudence or decisions rendered by the Supreme Court of the Republic of the Philippines. Using a case study approach that enabled a comparative examination of two (2) landmark cases decided by the Philippine Supreme Court, which were sourced from the Supreme Court Reports Annotated (SCRA), it was learned that judicial discretion, understood as a variety of public emotion, carries with it normative elements that are, then, grasped via the intersection of the prescriptive and descriptive components of the law. Additionally, the paper had also taken the liberty of utilizing the standpoint theory that enabled the detection of variance and its locus in the individual, at the micro level, at the level of everyday transactions. These perspectives stand to enrich when taken as an adjunct to the widely accepted view that circumstances obtained in each case or controversy determine the latter’s outcome and, thus, occasions an experience of a heightened sensibility towards the dynamism of jurisprudence or decisions rendered by the Supreme Court of the Republic of the Philippines

Social Capital and Populism in the Philippines: The Case of Duterte

    Get PDF
The paper tackles the question – are the high performance and trust ratings of President Rodrigo R. Duterte (PRRD) indicative of a deep and abiding social capital existing between state and society, and if so, does this mean that Filipinos will now move away from myopic to enlightened self-interest in addressing the current challenges that the country faces? It interrogates the question through the lens of Putnam’s concept of social capital. The paper discusses Putnam’s notion of social capital, Duterte’s high performance and trust ratings, and whether they are linked. The study likewise explores the broader connection between populism and social capital

Cytotoxic and apoptotic activities of marine sponge Stylissa massa hexane and methanol extracts against breast cancer cell

    Get PDF
Breast cancer is common among Filipino women. Statistical results indicate that one in every 13 Filipino women is expected to develop breast cancer in today’s generation, as stated by the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology (2015). It is associated with the failure of the body to maintain its normal homeostasis and its exposure to harmful chemicals that can result in the proliferation of abnormal cells. The marine environment has abundant potential marine sponges that may play significant roles in drug development for their uniquely structured and unexploited novel compounds. Hence, the in-vitro cytotoxic and apoptotic activity of marine sponge Stylissa massa extract collected from the aquatic resources of Barangay Tando, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras, Philippines, was investigated. The freshly chopped marine sponge was extracted using methanol and partitioned with n-hexane. The extracts were tested on MCF-7, a breast cancer cell line, for their cytotoxicity using MTT Assay. The apoptotic activities were detected using Annexin V-FITC assay kit by fluorescence microscopy and Caspase-Glo 3/7 assays. Both extracts contain alkaloids and amino acids. They inhibited the growth of MCF-7 cells in a dose-dependent manner with an IC50 values of 25 μg/mL and 90 μg/mL for hexane and methanol extract, respectively. These results showed significant cytotoxic and apoptotic activity of hexane and methanol extracts of S. massa. Thus, this marine sponge should be given attention as a potential local source of compounds with apoptotic activity for cancer

Adyenda ng Paggawa (Labor Agenda) sa Pagtatatag ng Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN): Kontekstwalisasyon ng Ilang Pahina ng “Kapaki-pakinabang na Kasaysayan” Tungo sa Mga Adbokasing Maka-Manggagawa sa Siglo 21

In traditional books on Philippine history, especially commercial textbooks, there is often little mention of workers and labor movements, as well as thelabor agenda in listing them as significant markers of each “era.” Consequently, it is not surprising that historical studies in many schools tend to focus on a state-centric discourse, relegating labor to the background or, at best, a historical footnote (if there is any). In response to this trend, this paper serves as an initial contribution aimed at describing, contextualizing, and popularizing the labor agenda through an examination of related documents from the founding documents of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan/New Patriotic Alliance (BAYAN). In general, this paper is guided by the lens of people’s history. Thus, documents from social movements rooted in “voices from below” are considered part of the so-called “usable past,” a history that helps in understanding the present. This paper aims to answer the following specific questions: 1) How was the labor agenda highlighted in BAYAN’s founding documents?: 2) How has the labor agenda evolved or remained the same from then until now?; 3) Why is the labor agenda, as emphasized in selected historical documents from the mentioned social movements, still relevant today, and how can it be promoted in the 21st Century

#SulitDeals, Pero Lugi si Rider? Ilang Pagtatasa Ukol sa Lumalaking Gig Economy sa Pilipinas

Existing digital delivery platforms such as Grab, FoodPanda, Angkas, and Lazada brought comfort and ensured speedy services to its users. While they offered innovative service solutions, a more incisive analysis shows that these platforms create more harm than good. Work structures and its overall value are diminishing, and delivery riders are not getting decent pay, proper support, and actual benefits even if they are the main service providers in these platforms. This paper intends to examine various studies on platform or gig economies, and collate and analyze the issues that directly affect delivery riders. These findings will serve as foundations to develop policy recommendations designed to significantly improve the conditions of delivery riders, alongside a critical review of Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Labor Advisory No. 14-21. To this end, the study is hinged on the pandemic manifesto “Democratizing Work” by Isabella Ferreras — gigworkers should not be seen differently from traditional conceptions of work. As such, policies intent on improving the gig economy should be geared towards social justice and securing the rights of Filipino workers.

Minitmithing Kapayapaan: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Posttraumatic Growth Among Military Personnel Who Fought in the Marawi Siege

    Get PDF
This paper focused on the posttraumatic growth of soldiers deployed in the Marawi Siege in 2017, the First Scout Ranger Regiment (FSSR) unit, considered the military’s elite squad. Psychologists Tedeschi and Calhoun posited that a positive change follows a traumatic life event leading to a personality transformation in the individual, thus facilitating growth. The study explored how the soldiers’ involvement in the war resulted in their more profound connection to the Divine Being. The experience made them have a more meaningful relationship with the people they love, appreciate their lives more, and accept their current situation and the responsibilities that go with it
