The Architectural Aspects of the Interactions Between Exhibition Architecture and Curatorial Program

    No full text
The article explores the interactions within an exhibition between its architecture and its curatorial program. Instead of being regarded as a dual system with a single goal, the interactions are seen as two separate systems that do not always ensure a coherent articulation of the content in the exhibition. An architectural program implies an existing exhibition space with new design solutions for a specific exhibition. An architectural program is an existing exhibition space with new design solutions for a specific exhibition. The curatorial program is called the logic of the arrangement of works - the principle according to which art objects are combined into a conceptual, visual or thematic picture. The study highlights that each of these programs has three types of expression that make up nine possible interactions between the exhibition architecture and its content. Of these, three interactions mark situations where the spatial layout and its content correspond to each other. However, the study focuses on the cases with particular discrepancies, as the practice shows that such exhibitions are most prevalent. This is thought to be due to the fact that the architectural structure of the exhibition halls is often unfriendly towards certain curatorial scenarios. Instead of regarding this as a problem, the paper considers this as an opportunity for the cases of conscious and productive solutions. The paper investigates one specific case: “Head With Many Thoughts”, an exhibition at CAC. The exhibition is analysed both theoretically and practically with the help of the Space Syntax method, analytically assessing the behavioral patterns predicted in the exhibition, as well as practically checking how the audience groups respond to the exhibition. Rather than using a mere theoretical analysis, the paper proposes to consider the potential of these methods for further development and practical adaptation

Isabel Flores de Oliva (1586–1617), generally known as Saint Rose of Mary or Saint Rose of Lima, became the first and, until today, the most venerated Catholic saint of Latin America. Almost immediately after her death, this Dominican of the Third Order, who died young and won fame for her highly ascetic life, various virtues and immovable faith, developed a cult following in Peru. Soon enough the cult had spread across South America and Europe. The topic of Saint Rose of Lima has been addressed in a great many publications that appeared in various (primarily Spanish-speaking) countries, but in Lithuania, the devotion to and images of this saint have not received specific research attention. By referring to the published sources and manuscripts, as well as the surviving ecclesiastical artworks, the author of this paper aims to discuss in more detail how information about the life and personality of Saint Rose of Lima was disseminated in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, what information about Latin America, its culture and people was conveyed in these sources, whether it was reflected in the icono- graphy of the saint, and if so, how.

In 1974, the exhibition Hungría 74 presented 24 artists from Hungary at the Centro de Arte y Communicación (CAYC) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. By the time, artists from both countries suffered political repressions of the dictatorships ruling their countries. Hungría 74 thus was one of the few occasions to interchange ideas. However, the artists from Hungary and Argentina did not first and foremost agree on their political stance. Rather, they were both preoccupied with the dematerialization of art objects. Among Western artist dematerialization was perceived as a rebellious act against the commodification of art objects on the market; it was also embraced as a positive effect of media societies facilitating participation of marginalized groups. However, Argentinian and Hungarian artists transformed the idea to their own means. Experiencing political oppressions, they understood that the loss of material presence was not merely positive. By contrast, it was connected to disappearance, forced exiles or invisible political surveillance. The works of Dóra Maurer, Tamás Hencze, István Haraszty, György Jovánovics presented at Hungría 74 reflect these different notions of dematerialization and offer a critical perspective on the broader political consequences of dematerializations in media societies developing worldwide since the 1970s.1974 m.

The image of the Infant Jesus bearing the instruments of the Passion appears in the mural paintings of St Theresa’s Church in Vilnius. It is the so-called Infant Christ of the Passion – basically a symbolic, metaphorical motif connecting the realities of childhood and death. In the article, its iconographic genesis and the historical context of its appearance in the side Chapel of the Divine Providence (later, of Our Lady of Good Counsel) of St Theresa’s Church in Vilnius is discussed. The author attempts to reconstruct the meaning of this motif in a more general iconographic context of the furnishing and mural paintings of both chapels of the narthex. It is revealed that based on the altars of these chapels standing opposite each other, another axis of the church’s iconographic programme was formed – the series of the Passion of Christ, which was as if intersecting the axis of the visual narrative of the central nave running lengthwise. The author of the article tries to prove the supposition that the polychromy of the church from the second half of the 18th century was closely related to the iconography of the titular images of its altars

Tekste, neturinčiame nei vizualinių iliustracijų, nei vaizdo įrašų, siūloma pajusti vaizdą kaip galimus žmogiškuosius ir nežmogiškuosius asambliažus ir numatyti galimas gyvybės formas, manipuliuojant laiko apraiškomis ir sukuriant sutartas realybes. While observing various situations and experiences, imagination institutes new realities within the distinctions between the animate and the inanimate, whose relations no longer reflect the customary order of the material world. That is why it makes sense to explore the emerging systems, in which new modes of participation and self-organisation that are capable of changing the definitions of life are formed. If we choose the distortion of the experienced time as the observation method, a moving image can be used for that purpose. The author of the article suggests understanding animation as changes in the state of systems when time perception is manipulated (e.g., the time-lapse technique in photography/video). By problematizing the understanding of animation, the author offers to explore it in two directions – on the material level, when animation is happening through constant agreements between the animate and the inanimate, and on the level of animation instituted as a cultural construct. Thus, the concept of animation is construed as immanent to culture – cinema, memory culture, philosophy of time and, alongside, as animation of matter, in which the systems com- ing into agreement institute the shapes of common consciousness (bioanimation, consciousness animation). The system perceiving itself as human tries to establish possible interactions with other systems through requests, which can be considered animation. Alongside, the term of animability is offered, which defines the capacity of matter to take part in such human/inhuman relations. The immersive state that appears in the process of animation as an unending “immersing” into virtual reality is discussed. In this text that does not have illustrations, the author invites us to feel images as possible human/inhuman assemblages and to predict possible life forms by manipulating the expressions of time and thus creating agreed realities. It is asserted in the article that animation is a request sent by certain forms of matter to other forms, thus creating agreed systems that organize various shapes of consciousness as constitutions uniting these systems. The author tries to assemble into a constellation several important positions – memory (the courage of vision, an expression of time), catastrophe (the separation of testimony, rhythm, a possibility of a memory echo), vibrating matter (in a ready state) and virtual reality (reality augmented with visions of matter)

The First Art Historian Giorgio Vasari and His Influence on the Lithuanian Art History: Joseph Sounders on Szymon Czechowicz

The article discusses the first Lithuanian art historical publication by proffessor and art historian Joseph Saunders, who read it in Vilnius University in November 1815. The article titled “Knowledge about Szymon Czechovicz’s Life and Creations” is considered to be the beginning of historiographical research in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Similarly to the first art historian Giorgio Vasari and his “Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects” (published in 1550), Saunders reminds his readers of a forgotten painter (who made multiple portraits and religious scenes), and underlines his accomplishments and talent. Following the Vasarian tradition, Saunders brings attention to Czechovicz’s life, his character, and his approach to art. Much like Vasari, Saunders is interested in the artist’s soul, virtues and morale, and is emphasizing their importance in his philosophic reflections about art and artists. By comparing Saunders’ article with the scheme of the “Lives” by Vasari, the paper suggests that Vasari could have been a model art historian, and argues that his methods of analysis were applied by Saunders in the 19th century

Pasimetę tarp Rytų: vakariečių žvilgsnis į Pietų Ameriką ir Rytų Europą: Acta Academia Artium Vilnensis

In this paper I utilise Edward Said’s framework of Orientalism in order to investigate how the regions that the European explorers have mistakenly or negligently identified in their imaginaries as “the East” are brought into the colonial order through an a priori assumption of their inferiority to the West. I turn to South America and Eastern Europe as the two frontiers which make these operations visible. Through the analysis of primary sources such as travel journals and letters from Spanish explorers and conquistadors during the age of encounters, as well as the writings the English and French travellers made during their visits to Eastern Europe during the Enlightenment, I demonstrate how the Western European Orientalist imaginaries remain persistent through the ages despite the geographical explorations and geopolitical changes, and instead of disappearing, migrate to create the new orients as the realms of European otherness.

Mikołaj Krzysztof “the Orphan” Radziwiłł and the "Arbor Humanae Vitae": Reflections on Human Life

Tekste plačiau pristatoma ir nagrinėjama vieno Lietuvos menotyros apyvartoje nežinoto grafikos lakšto ikonografija. Tai nyderlandų graverio Theodooro Galle pagal LDK didiko Mikalojaus Kristupo Radvilos Našlaitėlio sumanymą išraižytas grafikos kūrinys, kuris gimė didikui bendradarbiaujant su Plantino-Moretus spaustuvininkais ir nyderlandų graveriais, kai spaudai buvo rengiamas garsios Radvilos Našlaitėlio knygos Kelionė po Jeruzalę aprašymas. Raižinyje persipina kelios temos – žmogaus gimties, gyvenimo, mirties ir amžinojo gyvenimo tema, taip pat galime įžvelgti Radvilos Našlaitėlio gyvenimo istoriją, atsispindi to laiko žmogaus gyvenimo vertybės, santykis su Šv. Raštu ir mąstymas apie amžinybę.The print The Tree of Human Life (Arbor Humanae Vitae) is distinguished by its size and rich textual and iconographic material. It combines several iconographic themes – the tree of life, a comparison of a rich man’s and a poor man’s life based on the text of the New Testament (Lk 16, 19-31), and the themes of death and eternal life. These themes are intertwined and related to separate periods of human life (birth, life, death and eternal life), and the engraving itself is embellished with numerous quotes from the Holy Scripture. In total, the copper engraving has a hundred (100) inscriptions-quotes, which expand its visual part and are grouped semantically, while the right and the left sides of the engraving are connected according to the principle of opposites. Though the number of quotes is incredibly large, the artist successfully “dealt” with this task, creating a relatively harmonious composition, even though in some places the inscriptions infringe on the visual part of the illustration or overshadow it. On the other hand, the amount of the inscriptions shows that the author of the engraving, Mikołaj Krzysztof “the Orphan” Radziwiłł, was well versed in the Holy Scripture and arranged them consistently, bringing out the theme of earthly life relevant for that time, and introducing a vision of eternal life. The iconographic analysis of the artwork that has barely caught the attention of Lithuanian art researchers shows its relation to the poetic work The Rise of the Radziwiłłs (Aulaeum Radzivilaeum,1604) by Mathias Nevius. It is one of the very few examples in the history of Lithuanian art when the main idea of the artwork and the name of the author of its drawing/engraving? (Tomasz Makowski (1575–1630)) is conveyed through the poetic word. This engraving created in Antwerp illustrates the cooperation between the author of the idea, magnate Mikołaj Krzysztof “the Orphan” Radziwiłł, and his engraver Theodoor Galle who embodied his client’s vision
