Straipsnyje, taikant parodų istorijos ir diskurso analizės prieigas, nagrinėjamas Lietuvos dizaino istorijos rašymas parodose nuo XX a. pabaigos, išryškinant kuratorystės reikšmę dizaino raidos naratyvams konstruoti ir aptariant jų viešą recepciją atminties aspektu. Parodos Art deco Lietuvoje (1998), Modernizacija. XX a. 7–8 dešimtmečių Baltijos šalių menas, dizainas ir architektūra (2011), Art deco Kaune 1919–1940. Namų jausmas (2015), Daiktų istorijos. Lietuvos dizainas 1918−2018, Taikomoji dailė ir dizainas. 1918–2018, Lietuva. Londonas. 1968. Lietuviško dizaino odisėja (visos 2018) ir kitos suformavo bei pristatė visuomenei „trūkstamą“ Lietuvos dizaino objektų rinkinį, steigė ir plėtojo naujus teorinius diskursus, susidūrė su Naujausiųjų laikų atminties politikos iššūkiais, teikė impulsų vietos identiteto konstravimo procesams. The article investigates the history of Lithuanian design by using the material from the curatorial design exhibitions that took place since the late 20th century to this day. The aim is to underly the importance of curatorship for the construction of narratives of the local design history and to critically analyze the reception of design exhibitions in relation to the challenges of the contemporary politics of memory. The scrutinized exhibitions include Art Deco in Lithuania (1998), Cold War Modern: Design 1945-1970 (2009), Modernization. Baltic Art, Architecture, and Design. 1960s-70s (2011), Our Metamorphic Futures. Design, Technical Aesthetics and experimental architecture in Soviet Union 1960-1980 (2011), Art Deco in Kaunas 1919-1940: The Feeling of Home (2015), Stories of Things. Lithuanian Design 1918-2018, Applied Arts and Design. 1918-2018, and Lithuania. London. 1968. The Odyssey of Lithuanian Design (all 2018). They all played a key role in putting together the corpus from the most important artifacts further explored by design historians, while also establishing the new and revisiting the old art historical discourses, participating in the most recent debates on memory, and even contributing to contemporary city branding. The curatorship of design exhibitions involved the use of various strategies and theoretical approaches: the expansion of the notion of design in accordance with the specific conditions of its functioning in a particular locality; good knowledge of the context of topical research on the history of international design; attention to the Lithuanian design relations in both the West and the East; integration of social, economic, technological and cultural factors into the analysis of design production and distribution; openness to the dialogue between the ‘grand’ and ‘small’ narratives; decanonisation of the notion of an exceptional artifact (the traditional object of design research); construction of the pool of ‘imaginary’ design with the help of various means of reconstruction as well as conceptual exhibition architecture; and, last but not least, openness of these exhibitions to the new aspects of research, supplementary knowledge and interpretations. All of that stimulated writing the history of Lithuanian design in the 21st c. The retrospective trajectories apparent in the reception of design exhibitions (revisionism, nostalgia, and instrumentalisation) brought up the importance of their curatorship and public presentation, especially when we aim to facilitate the critical relation towards the ‘imagery of the past’ and preserve its living memory as heritage

What Is ‘National Cinema’? Canon, Transnational Cinema, and Early Cinema

Although the aspects of anationhood in art theory and culture have already been thoroughly investigated, the relatively young discipline of cinema theory is only beginning to grapple with the notion of nationality in cinema. The earliest attempts to define ‘national cinema’ go back as far as the soviet and the early Independence periods, as seen in the works of Marijona Malcienė, Laimonas Tapinas, and Živilė Pipinytė. The paper aims to build on these early debates and develop a new interpretation of the notion of national cinema, offer its contemporary historiography with the pluralist understanding of the notion, and therefore ask the following series of questions: is it only the cultural texts about the host country that can be considered ‘national’? does ‘nationality’ depend on the nationality of the artist? what criteria determine the value and significance of cinema? is it just the films with high artistic quality that are worthy of our attention? how about other factors that determine the culture of cinema (audience, distribution, screening)? how does the integration of these factors change our understanding of ‘national cinema’? The paper addresses these questions in three parts. In the first one, I use key authors (Andrew Higson, John Hill, and Stephen Croft) to discuss the development of the notion of ‘national cinema’ while paying more attention to its modern interpretation due to its relevance to the contemporary cinema theory

The article aims to find out whether the appearance of the images of The Lord of Good Hope with its rare iconography in Lithuania was influ enced by the family history of the famous geologist Ignacy Domeyko (Lith. Ignotas Domeika, 1802–1889), while emphasising the contribution of his son, Rev. Hernán Domeyko (1859–1931), towards the dissemination of this cult. The history and iconography of the image, as well as the development of the veneration tradition in Santiago de Chile and the Vilnius Archdiocese is explored. The authorship of the painting of Vilnius Cathedral is estab lished, the erroneous date of its creation established in historiography is corrected, and the votives belonging to the painting are identified.Straipsnyje nagrinėjama, kokią įtaką retos ikonografijos Gerosios Vilties Viešpaties atvaizdų atsiradimui Lietuvoje turėjo garsaus geologo Ignoto Domeikos (1802–1889) šeimos istorija. Pristatoma atvaizdo istori ja ir gerbimo tradicijos plėtra Čilės Santjage ir Vilniaus arkivyskupijoje. Tyrimo metu išaiškėjo Ignoto Domeikos sūnaus kun. Hernáno Domeikos (1859–1931) vaidmuo Gerosios Vilties Viešpaties kulto sklaidos istorijoje, nustatyta Vilniaus katedros paveikslo autorystė (Manuelis Jesús Núñezas Gonzálezas, 1870–1953), koreguota istoriografijoje įsitvirtinusi klaidinga paveikslo sukūrimo data, identifikuoti atvaizdo votai Vilniaus katedroje. Vilniaus arkivyskupijoje Gerosios Vilties Viešpaties kultas paplito 1899–1929 m.: 1899 m. auksakalio Mykolo Nieviadomskio dirbtuvėse buvo sukurtas katedros paveikslo aptaisas, gausėjo votų. 1901 m. Senųjų Trakų bažnyčioje šalia presbiterijos įrengta titulinė Gerosios Vilties Vieš paties koplyčia, jos altoriui nutapytas paveikslas (signuotas: BJC, 1901 r.), 1929 m. Vilniuje išleista pamaldumui ir istorijai skirta knygelė Pan Jezus Dobrej Nadziei, 1943 m. patvirtinti maldos į Gerosios Vilties Jėzų tekstai lietuvių kalba. Iki Antrojo pasaulinio karo Vilniaus arkivyskupijoje atvaiz do gerbimą platino Vilniaus vyskupų aprobuoti maldingi leidiniai, raižiniai, devociniai paveikslėliai, litografijos.

Albrecht Dürer’s painting and description of the dream he had in 1525 bears a disturbing visual, verbal and temporal accuracy that prompts studying its historical context. Scholarship has related it with apocalyptic visions of the early 16th century, astrological predictions of floods, studies of the human mind and the understanding of dreams. This article focuses on the representation of the dream and explores the paradox of mimetic rendering of what has been seen without eyes. The growing authority of eyesight related to its erroneous, yet convincing transfer onto the picture plane by the means of linear perspective has resulted in the notion of a truthful image. The veracity of mimetic pictures could be confirmed either by autopsy or mathematical calculations. Surprisingly, the representation of Dürer’s dream is a mimetic image of unverifiable reality. Moreover, caused by the anxiety of the prognosis of flood, in retrospect, the dream reveals itself as prophetic artefact, kept in suspense until it could be realized on the screen as the mimesis of imagination

Gyvenimo pabaigoje rašytojas kentėjo nuo miego sutrikimų, dažnai neatsimindavo sapnų, o įdomiausius fiksavo laiškuose broliui, be to, jų pagrindu parašė autobiografinį pasakojimą „Bemiegės naktys“, dalimis publikuotą savaitraštyje Tygodnik ilustrowany. Motifs of fantastic images, dreams and daydreams are seldom found in Józef Ignacy Kraszewski’s (1812–1887) paintings or drawings, but are quite frequent in his literary work and had a huge impact on the dissemination of the romanticist worldview in culture. In his works, dream is often perceived as a means of communicating future events to the dreamer. On the other hand, dream transfers the dreamer to another, spiritual realm, which is much more varied and richer than “real” life conditioned by concrete daily events. The writer perceived such dreams as events, “happenings”, a more bizarre but happier part of life. Kraszewski’s writings greatly contributed to the Romanticist worldview taking root in art. A Lithuanian translation of his autobiographical short Memories of Dreams is published here. Written when Kraszewski lived in the Omelne manor in Volhynia (today, Lutsk region in Ukraine), the text appeared in the cultural weekly Tygodnik Literacki published in Poznań in 1839. This article was prepared for the conference „How to Tell About Art? Art History, Criticism, Texts and Narratives in Lithuania“ which was organized by the Institute of Art Research. The conference description stated: “The aim of art history and criticism is to open the work of art to the imagination of the perceiver.” What texts on art best reveal their artistic dimensions? All texts leave traces and affects perception, depending on the influence and symbolic value of the interpreter and the emancipation of the viewer or perceiver. How many and which perceptual references, what plug-ins/crutches does the viewer really need from an art critic? For Jacques Rancière, the emancipation of the viewer begins with the principle of equality. However, the art institution often insists on the ‘correct’ way to view the work, as well as what to buy, collect and watch, thus enforcing a linear understanding of cultural development. American antropologist Clifford Geertz argues that culture cannot be described by imposing ideas and advocates for the percetion–based, rather than evaluation–based understanding of culture. According to the modern paradigm of cultural relativism, it is important to learn the language of those we research, so that we could look over their shoulder, without succumbing to the Darwinian scientific racism. The latter violates the artist’s autonomous representation of free thought, as well as the viewer’s freedom to choose and interpret works of art according to their own experience. The artist’s own ‘study’ of the authentic origins of an artwork can be considered as a unveiling of the unexposed part of the artwork in textual form. Artists own narrative frees them from the necessity to evaluate and provides material for studies of the peculiar systems of artistic thinking and creative genesis. Speaking about – or rather, with – art and artistic approach presuppose a respectful relationship with the art viewer and perceiver: instead of explaining what the particular experience should/could feel like, it provides more material for perception and further artistic interpretation. Could this help us “open the work of art to the imagination of the perceiver”? It is possible that, when written by a non-canonical artist, such a text with its ambiguous ties to the artwork would not only hamper the viewer’s imagination, but also deconstruct any pre-existing fragmentary perception. The art history inventory finds complicated systems inconvenient. Therefore, by asking “Who Wants to Know where Artists live?”, I not only emphasise the Who, which refers to the interested party, but also ask weather (who needs it) or why it could be interesting to know all that, and what to do with it. The article presents excerpts from a piece of author’s artistic writing which was read as a conference paper. The reader is therefore invited to sample the experience

Futuristiniai miestai Rytuose ir Pietuose. Gyulos Kosices dialogas su Vengrijos ir Slovakijos menininkais: Acta Academia Artium Vilnensis

    No full text
The article aims to reveal similarities between the artistic approaches of the Czechoslovakian-born Argentine artist Gyula Kosice and the Slovak art scene. Referencing Polish art historian Piotr Piotrowski’s concept of “horizontal art history”, the article focuses on the artistic dialogue between kinetic and op art artists developed during the Cold War period in the countries of Central Europe and Latin America. The goal of the article is twofold. Firstly, it will expose the specificity of artistic practices and strategies developed in non-Western art scenes. It also aims to reveal certain proximities among artists, especially those engaged in kinetic and geometrical art. Adopting a transnational and transmodern approach, the text will focus on Gyula Kosice’s contact with the Slovak artist Alex Mlynárčik, established through the French art critic Michel Ragon. It will also highlight similarities between Kosice’s hydrospatial cities, Mlynárčik’s architectural proposals realised with the VAL group in the 1970s, and the concept of prospective architecture coined by Michel Ragon.Straipsnyje aptariamos sąsajos tarp Čekoslovakijoje gimusio argentiniečių menininko Gyulos Kosices meninių strategijų ir Slovakijos meno scenos. Remiantis lenkų meno istoriko Piotro Piotrowskio „horizontalios meno istorijos“ samprata, straipsnyje susitelkiama į Šaltojo karo metu išsivysčiusį meninį dialogą tarp Centrinės Europos ir Lotynų Amerikos kinetinio meno ir oparto atstovų. Straipsnio tikslas dvejopas.

Analogies can be drawn between the contents of writings by Julio Cortázar and Jorge Luis Borges and Poland’s neo-avant-garde art of the 1960s and 70s, produced in the context of the oppressive reality of a Communist state: the literary category of ‘magical realism’ finds its counterpart in the actuality of an authoritarian regime, which is equally grotesque. The works by Maria Stangret-Kantor, Janusz Kaczorowski, Barbara Kozłowska, Ewa Partum, Zdzisław Sosnowski, Wojciech Bruszewski, or Natalia Lach-Lachowicz and the theoretical views expressed by Andrzej Lachowicz and Andrzej Kostołowski, which resulted from working with language as an artistic means, can be interpreted as expressions of one’s striving for imagined freedom – objections to the manipulation of meanings in the public sphere.Straipsnyje siekiama išvesti paraleles tarp Lotynų Amerikos rašytojų Julio Cortázaro bei Jorge Luiso Borgeso kūrybos ir XX a. 7–8 deš. Lenkijos naujojo avangardo.

    No full text
This Archival publication presents a manuscript of the Lithuanian architect Vladas Vizgirda (b. 1935), in which the author describes the project of an export pavilion of fifty years ago. The Lithuanian SSR received an award for its exhibition in the pavilion of the Soviet Union at the international agriculture and industry fair FISA-72 held in Santiago de Chile. As the leading architect of the Chile-72 pavilion, Vizgirda reminisces on the conception of the 500 m2 display, its architectural and design solutions, the preparation process, the installation works, and the impressions experienced during his almost three-month-long work trip to Chile in October–December 1972. An important part of the published source is a visual narrative consisting of unpublished photographs, which allows us to newly assess the pavilion’s modern constructions, minimalist design, and colour solutions, as well as Gintautėlė Baginskienė’s design projects created specifically for this pavilion. In the publication of the source, the manuscript is presented unedited, while the introductory text describes the context of the pavilion and outlines the first directions of possible assessments and interpretations.Šaltinio publikacijoje pristatomas lietuvių architekto Vlado Vizgirdos (g. 1935) rankraštis, kuriame autorius aprašo prieš 50 metų įgyvendintą eksportinio paviljono projektą.
