Tema ovoga rada pregled je društvenih teorija starenja i njihova odnosa prema instituciji umirovljenja. Pod društvenim promjenama u razdoblju starenja razmatraju se promjene odnosa društva i pojedinca do kojih dolazi tijekom starenja, a očituju se u promjenama aktivnosti, interakcija i uloga starijih osoba. Autori pokazuju u kojoj je mjeri konstruiranje dobi, starosti i institucije umirovljenja pod utjecajem gospodarskih, strukturnih i kulturnih čimbenika pojedinog društva. This paper reflects on social theories of ageing and their relation toward the institution of retirement. Social changes analysed signify the changes in relationship between society and individuals during the process of their aging. These changes are seen through different levels of activity, interaction and roles older people play in the society. Authors show to what extent is the construction of age and the institution of retirement under influence of economical, structural and cultural aspects of a speciffic society. In so doing, they support a modified concept of age which in modern society becomes more complex, equally due to longer life expectancy and changes in lifestyle. Retirement itself is approached to as an institution, process and experience with emphasis placed on the context which shapes it. There is a widely spread myth of unproductivity and inactivity of older people upon retirement, i.e. leaving the labour market, which frequently represents a basis for their social exclusion and marginalization. Opposing this, the authors present theoretical approaches and results of empirical researches that deal with the concept of productive ageing, preserving and (or) developing certain activities in older age with aim to maintain an active life style. The concept of productive ageing subsumes the multiple contributions of older individuals to their personal wellbeing as well as that of their communities and society as a whole

Croatian Village at the Beginning of the 21st Century - Case Study of the Municipality of Gornja Rijeka

The paper presents a part of the results of the empirical research aimed at deepening scientific knowledge about the quality of life in rural areas in Croatia on the example of the municipality of Gornja Rijeka. Potential population migration, evaluation of environmental advantages and disadvantages of living in the observed rural communities as well as the infrastructural facilities of settlements, the subjective assessment of the experience of belonging to a rural community, and proposed measures to improve the quality of life have been analyzed. The research was conducted by using the questionnaire method during November and December 2012 on a sample of 170 respondents aged 18 to 60, accounting for about 10% of the total population of the municipality. The municipality of Gornja Rijeka shares similarities with most rural areas in Croatia that are characterized by economic underdevelopment and demographic regression. Depopulation and ageing, as the dominant demographic processes, shape the small community marked by a lower level of educational population structure which, along with almost no local initiative, represent limiting factors for boosting economic activities. Despite a number of limiting factors of life in this area, the respondents express a high degree of satisfaction with life in rural areas, but they also note that some contents of social and communal infrastructure need to be significantly improved. Although being aware of the many advantages of living in rural areas, such as well-preserved nature, clean air, tranquility and simplicity of life, and lower cost of living, economic reasons force them to think about migration

Bibliography of Papers Published in the Journal Migration Themes / Migration and Ethnic Themes (1985 – 2014)

U skladu s tom tematikom odlučile smo objavljene radove klasificirati u sljedeće velike tematske grupe: 1. Migracije, 2. Etničnost, 3. Stanovništvo, 4. Bibliografije i 5. To mark the 30th anniversary of the publication of the journal Migracijske i etničke teme / Migration and Ethnic Themes (up to 2000 it was issued under the title Migration Themes: a Journal for Migration and Ethic Studies), we consider it important and necessary to provide an overview in one place of the papers published in the journal from its first issue in 1985 to the last one in 2014. The most important aim of this bibliography is to introduce the scientific and professional public, especially new researchers, to the topics covered by this journal as well as to enable easier access to the journal and its more convenient use. The bibliography is selective. It includes scientific papers (the original scientific paper, preliminary communication and review paper) professional papers, conference papers, panel discussions, discussions, reviews and bibliographies, while reviews of books and periodicals (i.e. papers from the sections Books, Reviews, From Foreign Periodicals and Movie) as well as Introductions, Memories, In Memoriam and Conference Reviews (from the sections Reviews and Conferences) are not included. All the papers are available at Hrčak – Portal of Scientific Journals of Croatia. Given that all kinds of papers are not included, but primarily in order to provide its better examination and insight into published papers according to specific topics and dealing with various issues, as well as to provide easier and faster access, we have decided to make a subject bibliography, and not a chronological one. (On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Migration Themes journal, the chronological bibliography prepared by Josip Kumper was published in the 3-4/1994 issue.) From the very first issue, migration and ethnicity have been the main themes represented in the journal, but the emphasis on the basic issues in previous papers, which involved external migration, internal migration, emigration and minorities/nationalities, have gradually shifted toward new phenomena and processes throughout the world such as globalization, increasing spatial mobility of people, and delocalisation and relocalisation of culture. In line with these topics, we have decided to classify the published papers into the following major thematic groups: 1. Migration, 2. Ethnicity, 3. Population, 4. Bibliographies, and 5. Other, whereby the first three groups are divided into subgroups. Taking into consideration the fact that the papers deal with various aspects of migration, ethnicity and identity, and part of them belong to two or even three basic groups at the same time, it has been impossible to assign them to only one of them. The papers whose themes are somewhat different and cannot be included in any of the mentioned groups, are classified in the group Other. The bibliography was compiled by the de visu method, that is, by checking the physical copies of the journal. Within the specific groups, the papers are listed in alphabetical order by the authors’ last names. In the case of several papers pertaining to the same author within the same subgroup, they are arranged chronologically, starting with the earliest. Each bibliographical entry contains the following information: last name, first name, title, volume, year, number and range of pages. The bibliography has an author’s index. The authors’ names in the index are linked with the number of the bibliographical entry, and are listed as they are cited in the journal so that the versions of the names or last names of the same author are placed one after the other. The papers that are classified into two or three basic groups are marked both bold and plain, with the numbers in bold denoting bibliographical records in which such papers appear for the first time and, at the same time, show the number of papers of a particular author

Foreign Unaccompanied Minors in the Republic of Croatia: the Issue of Language Learning and Education

Politike i mjere usmjerene skrbi i zaštiti stranih maloljetnika bez pratnje uključuju državne mehanizme u domeni utvrđivanja identiteta i dobi maloljetnika, dodjeljivanja skrbnika, osiguravanja smještaja i slobode kretanja, pravne i financijske podrške, zdravstvene i socijalne skrbi, učenja jezika, obrazovanja te osiguravanja njihove reunifikacije s obitelji. Manjak međuresorne i unutarresorne koordiniranosti državnog sektora rezultira u ovom području institucionalnim poteškoćama i nedosljednošću u implementaciji postojeće nacionalne regulative i europskih standarda.Modern mixed migration flows include children separated from their parents and unaccompanied minors, who are among the most vulnerable groups of migrants. From 2006 to July 2014, a total of 3255 foreign unaccompanied minors were registered in Croatia, of whom about 400 were asylum seekers, mainly citizens of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Somalia. It is obvious that they stay shortly in the institutions entitled for their care and arbitrarily leave them within just a few weeks from the day of arrival. Policies and measures aimed at the welfare and protection of foreign unaccompanied minors include state mechanisms in the domains of establishing the identity and age of a minor, appointment of a guardian, ensuring accommodation and freedom of movement, legal and financial support, health and social care, language learning, education and ensuring their reunification with family. The focus of this paper is on the analysis of policies and measures related to language learning and the education of foreign unaccompanied minors, which is one of the basic prerequisites of their inclusion in society. Based on research conducted by the interview method among the relevant actors involved in the system of their protection and care, some of the most important challenges, primarily in the field of educational, but also of the broader integration of foreign unaccompanied minors have been analysed. Preliminary results suggest that their brief stay in Croatia and early drop-out of the system prevents the implementation of the national care program guaranteed by the legal framework, which partly makes it impossible for the state to systematically and effectively plan and implement further activities in the education of children of foreigners. Lack of inter-agency and intra-agency coordination within the government sector leads in this area to institutional problems and inconsistency in the implementation of the existing national regulations and European standards

Satisfaction with the quality of life on Croatian small islands: Zlarin, Kaprije and Žirje

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to determine the levels of satisfaction with various life domains that constitute objective conditions of the quality of island life, and which influence the perception of islanders’ personal well-being among the inhabitants of three small islands (Zlarin, Kaprije and Žirje) in Croatia. The obtained results are based on a resident survey (N=141). A quality of life assessment was carried out by recognizing the specificity of an island’s surface area and its population (small communities, mostly elderly people), as well as by evaluating choices that respondents perceive to be important for their well-being. Based on applied multivariate analyses, the research suggests that life satisfaction, besides a significant correlation with material status (income), is also greatly affected by the extent of preserved social values, common to the rural communities to which the observed islands belong, such as the closeness of personal relationships (level of acceptance in the local community, solidarity) and the social order maintained through informal control (which provides a sense of security). Both islanders who have never lived off their island, as well as returnees and in-migrants, positively value the way of life in island communities

This article delves into Bosnia-Herzegovina, and especially into the town of Bihać, to ethnographically examine the changing nature of the state and family, as visible through practices of elder care. I use my ethnographic data gathered at a nursing home Vitalis in Bihać, and especially the predicament of an elderly Bosnian woman whom I call Zemka, to argue that both the state and family in postwar and postsocialist Bosnia-Herzegovina materialize as semi-absent. In the process of unpacking these multiple semi-absences, I reveal the lived effects of changing postwar and postsocialist state, and altering kinship relations as they affect "ordinary" people

Nothing without neighbours’ – interlocal relations and campanilistic narratives on two Croatian islands

    No full text
On the Croatian islands of Hvar and Brač, there is a diversified system of rivalry and animosity among island communities, defined by the term campanilism. It is based on stereotypes about inhabitants of neighbouring island localities or neighbouring islands and on the production of mocking collective nicknames. Anecdotes, jokes, proverbs and similar oral forms are used as a means of confirming characteristics attributed to certain communities. Nowadays their performance is mainly connected to sporting events, celebrations of patron saints’ days and school children’s disputes. Previously they were considered to be a form of exclusively intra- island knowledge. Islanders mostly found them insulting. However, some communities have decided to turn these stereotypes into brands, highlighting them in representations of local identities and in tourist promotion. In this paper we analyze the way in which certain stereotypes focusing on islanders’ flaws or virtues are used in contemporary identity strategies and the construction of local uniqueness
