田中一村考－「琉球弧」で開花した日本画－
Get PDFThe Japanese-style painter Tanaka Isson (1908-77) moved to Amami Islands when he was 51, and began to live there by himself. He worked passionately on many paintings while also doing dye works for a living. Isson pioneered a form of painting that portrays a unique atmosphere of highly decorative tranquility. Most of his work, however, never appeared in the public view, and he remained largely unknown to the general populace throughout his life. This paper critically discusses his work during the Amami Period, the height of his artistry, as distinct Japanese-style paintings blossomed on the Ryukyuan archipelago. The paper presents some possibilities of how Isson came to pursue his distinct form of art on Amami Islands and contemplates the significance of his art and the great cultural potential that his work opens up for the full history of Japanese and Okinawan art.departmental bulletin pape

No full text2010年から2011年に保守党が、外国語か古典語の内一つを再び必修科目として設定したことは、イングランドにおいて少なからぬ議論を巻き起こした。過去50年間、教育学上の大きな転換の大半は、教師たちのずっと期待してきたような成果を生み出さなかったし、もう一度学習を｢文法中心｣にすべきかどうかにも戸惑いがある。この教育学の変わり目を機に、小論では中世イングランドの言語教育史を刷新した転換が本質的にいかなるものであったのか研究する。フーコーの歴史分析法によりつつ、文法書や対話録の調査を通しその思想体系の解明に照準する。ここで明らかになるのは、文法/翻訳の方法が第二次大戦までの言語学習の全てであったとする思い込みにはあまり根拠が無いということであり、また戦後用いられた方法や概念はオリジナルとは言い難いということである。まず、定式化された文法分析を教育学上重視することから、コミュニケーションとレトリックを重視した表現を駆使することまで、これまでずっとせめぎ合いがあったことを明らかにした後、結論として提言できるのは、いわゆる｢文法の回帰｣はどうしても避けられないとしても、無味乾燥に活用する必要もないということである。departmental bulletin pape

Get PDFCharlotte Brontё's Jane Eyre is one of the greatest novels of the 19h-century, and with a range of memorable characters. Among them is Bertha Mason, a troubled soul who has since the late 1970s attracted enormous critical attention from students of feminism and postcolonial studies. Critics have also seen Bertha as a "dark double" alter-ego of the heroine Jane Eyre, and other times Bertha is understood as representing an archetypal "subaltern" woman whose sacrificial self-immolation in honor of a deceased husband was once part of Indian tradition. Women's sacrifices are expected even today, if not literally then figuratively in all male-dominated societies in the East as well as in the West. Women from all over the world are in some ways still very much objects of coercion and "manhandling" both within the public and private spheres. This paper compares Bertha to Jane with a special focus on the ways their lives literally and figuratively touch the lives of others. It highlights some significant differences and similarities in the manners Bertha and Jane both "touch" and "are touched" by the other characters.departmental bulletin pape
琉球処分後の沖縄の文化財－琉球王朝の造形文化を通して－
Get PDFThis essay examines Okinawa's historic buildings from the viewpoint of plastic arts, with a special focus on the cultural properties as they have been preserved after the abolition of the Ryukyuan kingdom. As we worked on the restoration of the carvings on historic buildings in Okinawa, we gradually learned that they had been altered from their original forms during Ryukyuan times. The remaining photos, drawings, and other relics stood witness to the alterations which are said to have been intentional from time to time due to some political interventions. The original carvings were further destroyed during World War 2. Only after the war was the restoration work commenced, which was something that had been never attempted, neither during the early Ryukyuan eras nor during the pre-modern period. Becoming more aware of their own historic heritages, people began to realize the importance of the restoration work. They were now hopeful of returning things to the original shapes that had been lost in the course of history. Shuri Castile is said to have fallen prey to much vandalism after the abolition of the kingdom when the castle ceased to be a functional site for the central government. According to some elderly people, the Chuzan Gate and the Hoshin Gate were sold along with other things, and the properties inside the buildings were also destroyed. The Battle of Okinawa led to further widespread destruction, wiping out people's memories of the unique structures and carvings that decorated the buildings. By the time of the restoration of the main hall of Shuri Castle, those lost buildings and carvings were barely remembered, but I gradually learned a number of facts about these things. From remaining photos and relics, and from old drawings and documents, I came to appreciate the full splendor of the plastic art on the buildings of the Kingdom of the Ryukyus. In this paper, I will present some facts gathered from local elderly people as well as findings and discoveries through the restoration work itself, and try to examine how Okinawa's cultural properties had been remodeled after Japan's annexation of the Ryukyuan kingdom.departmental bulletin pape

Get PDFThe process of the Japanese annexation of the Kingdom of Ryukyu at the end of the 19th century was called "Ryukyu Shobun" (disposition of Ryukyu) by the Meiji government of Japan. What were the reasons and grounds for the annexation of the Ryukyu kingdom by Japan? What was the significance of this annexation? This paper examines the final stage of the "Ryukyu Shobun" in particular, known as the "Ryukyu-han Shobun" (disposition of Ryukyu Domain), including the surrender of Shuri Castle, the establishment of Okinawa Prefecture in March 1879, and the transfer of King Sho Tai to Tokyo. As for the reasons behind the "Ryukyu-han Shobun," the Meiji government cited the Ryukyu Kingdom's violation of two Meiji decrees: "termination of the relationship between Ryukyu and Qing" and "transference of judicial and policing powers to Tokyo." Not only did the Meiji government implement the "Ryukyu-han Shobun" by armed force without permission from the Ryukyu side, it also committed a "deception" in the transfer of King Sho Tai to Tokyo. Although the "Ryukyu-han Shobun" was conducted through a pretense of lawful legitimacy, the seizing of Ryukyuan sovereignty was, in reality, coerced through armed force and fraud. The Meiji government dealt with the "Ryukyu-han Shobun" as a domestic problem. Due to the reasons and procedures used, however, this annexation differed from the abolition of the Han System and establishment of the Prefectural System in other regions of Japan. In reality, the disposition was achieved through the complete dismantling of the Ryukyu government, the seizure of its diplomatic, judicial, and other governmental powers. This final step served to complete the full process of annexation and, thus, clear the later groundwork for the wider Japanese invasion of Asia.departmental bulletin pape
沖縄マンガ史・試論－沖縄マンガの黎明期－
Get PDFThis review covers Okinawa Manga from 1832 to 1945. This review traces the origin of Okinawa Manga in Katsushika Hokusai's "Ryukyu Hakkei (Eight views of the Ryukyu Islands)." Also reviewed are satirical drawings of Ryukyu concerning the question of where Ryukyu fits in relation to China and Japan during the early years of Meiji Era. Moreover, satirical drawings published in 1901 and 1902 are examined from the Ryukyu Shinpo, the first commercial newspaper in Okinawa. Also, included are reviews of the works of Hekoten Shimokawa, a native of Ryukyu (known today as Okinawa), who became famous as a manga artist in Tokyo. Discovered was a series of 4-frame manga published in 1912 in the Ryukyu Asahi Shimbun. Lastly, discussed is anti-Japanese propaganda featured as manga advertisements in the Ryukyu Shuho during wartime.departmental bulletin pape

中学生におけるSignificant Others
Get PDFThe purpose of this article is to discuss responses to the following three questions: (a) who are significant others among junior high school students; (b) what is the familiar ranking to the father, the mother, the close friend, the teacher as the significant others; and (c) how are parent-child relationship factor and familiar ranking related? One-thousand eighty-eight junior high school students responded to the questionnaire. Removed from analysis are questions that incomplete answers. Main results are as follows. Answers to the question, "Who are the significant others?" varies according to the different sexes. The significant others for boys were athletes (42%) and celebrities (23%). The significant others for girls were "big sisters" (31%), celebrities (26%), mother (26%), and friends of the same sex (23%). The average order of familiarity was mother, close friends, father, and homeroom teacher. The parent-child relationship factor, which refers to familiarity, was "we talk often." The result of the categorical regression analysis was as follows.
