This study aims to reveal the Childcare Contents at Yaeyama kindergarten between 1933 and 1945, with the help of newly discovered historical documents, and follow-up to previous research on the same subject. The results of this study are as follows. First, Mrs. Tsurue Makishi, who had neither a background in nor exposure to kindergarten education, misunderstood a kindergarten to mean an elementary school. The concept of kindergarten, which was developed by Frobel, was introduced to Japan by the United States, and kindergarten practices were modified at the time by practitioners to reflect the Japanese style of teaching. In addition, the management and teaching methods differed across kindergartens and elementary schools. Second, as a kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Makishi appreciated the profession. Through continued efforts, she succeeded in improving the working conditions and compensation of the teachers-at the same time, these teachers were not as valued as the other teachers which belong to upper school. Lastly, a unique educational method was prevalent on Ishigaki Island during this period; the method was developed by the citizens even though the state had a stronger control over education and related practices.departmental bulletin pape

This paper presents an understanding of how university students perceive the current social situation of Okinawa. We administrated questionnaires focusing on university students. We received responses from 647 students. The respondents were grouped into three categories: (a) Okinawans who live in Okinawa; (b) Non-Okinawans who live in Okinawa; and (c) Non-Okinawans who live in outside Okinawa. The overall results are as follows: Concerning the Japanese government ruling over Okinawa, Group A is critical whereas Group C shows a certain level of appreciation. As for the language of Okinawa, Uchina-guchi, all three groups are positive. Group A, however, is slightly more negative, and Group C more appreciative than the average. These differences show that Group C is receptive to the traditions and social manners of Okinawa while Group A experiences a sense of inferiority in light of the mainland. In terms of all the questions that were posed, Group B is observed as holding neither negative nor positive attitudes when compared to groups A and C.departmental bulletin pape

This paper examines how various social factors influence junior high school students' abilities to adapt to the institutional demands of their schools. Recent data collected from 1,097 junior high school students in Okinawa Prefecture are presented and analyzed. Categorical regression analysis supports the following observations: (a) bullying constrains students' abilities to adapt fully to school life; (b) the existence of strict rules and regulations significantly constrains students from adapting to school life; and (c) the existence of a sympathetic teacher promotes students' abilities to adapt to school life.departmental bulletin pape

It is said that what's most important and beautiful about E.M. Forster's stories lies in the poetic moment of epiphany. The Other Side of the Hedge is a very short story and is not so well-known as The Road from Colonus and The Point of It, but it also has a vision of another, ideal world. In this short essay, I would like to try to answer the question why the brother in this short story has a scythe from the viewpoint of the quality Forster endowed the half brother with in The Longest Journey, Forster's autobiographical long novel.departmental bulletin pape

departmental bulletin pape

The author discussed in Uehara 2007 and Uehara 2009 the importance of improving three abilities- "imagination", "critical thinking", and "meta-cognitive ability that supports selfcontrol" -in order to lead the rising generation to the state of "living freely" as the goal of education. The author also argued that reading is the best method to improve the three abilities, advocated "Reading for Freedom" --a systematic reading education program that meets the needs of children's stage of development, and made practical reports. "Reading for Freedom" is an educational attempt to develop a self-disciplined, truly free human being. The author hopes for a sustainable society created by truly free humans where all lives can and will be able to coexist. In this troubled times, the source of hope for their future should exist in an environment where the goal of "cultivation of a sense of pacifism" should lie as thorough bass at the bottom of various forms of education. In this article, the author restructures her comprehension that was acquired through her lectures and workshops where she learned practical lessons with various people who are involved in education. Based on a belief that a "systematic reading education program" is a method of "cultivation of a sense of pacifism", she discusses the significance of reading education and the responsibility of educators.departmental bulletin pape

This essay discusses the publishing situations, as of December 2011, of the Okinawa manga book titled Comic Champroo, as well as other comic books of Japanese manga. The essay deals with the current conditions of domestic print and electronic publications. Without much funding to rely upon but with great ambitions to help develop Okinawa manga, we stepped forward to publish Comic Champroo electronically. Since the IT industry continues to change day by day, however, there is no guarantee if the path we have taken was the right choice. In fact, back in February 2011, we planned to renew the contents of Comic Champroo and make it compatible with smart phones and the iPad. But, because the market for such applications hasn't grown as much as we had expected, and also because its production costs proved too much to bear, the plan was consequently abandoned around August, and we switched into a much smaller one for the internet site. Meanwhile, by November, as I was working on this paper, the electronic publication had picked up momentum, especially in Okinawa. Okinawa ebooks are now, in fact, promising to shoulder the entire cost for the digitization of the paper books. Comic Champroo has taken this great opportunity and delved into the digitization of the contents. We hope to see that this decision will lead us to higher sales and much wider recognition, contributing to the further development of Okinawan manga.departmental bulletin pape

This thesis aims to clarify the view of Pedro de C?rdoba, a Spanish Dominican, on the human nature of the indigenous people of the Antilles in his catechism, titled Doctrina cristiana. Interpreting this text, I will especially focus on the concept of 'equality of human nature' to which C?rdoba referred when he proved that the indigenous people were rational creatures in order to fight against racial prejudice which was caused by the Spanish ruling system called 'encomienda'. As Gustavo Guti?rrez, a Dominican theologian, pointed out, C?rdoba mentioned this concept in the text, relating it to 'loving your neighbors', a supreme commandment of Christ. In this context, C?rdoba understood 'equality of human nature' to mean the infinite goodness of God who intends to save the humans from their sins. Moreover, C?rdoba understood 'loving your neighbors' as love that leads humans to recognizing the 'nature of God', which means 'final happiness'. Having interpreted the concept of 'equality of human nature' and that Christ's commandment, I find a common parallel between them where God's love leads humans to that happiness. Finally, I conclude that C?rdoba regarded the indigenous people as rational creatures that God's salvific will especially covers.departmental bulletin pape
