Gendered Pesantren in Contemporary Indonesia: Female Agency, Institution, and Everyday Lives

    No full text
In patriarchal cultures and societies, the practice of women’s domestication is commonly embraced. As an educational institution, pesantren are inherently led by the kyai due to their exclusive leadership. Many scholarly studies often neglect the roles of their wives as counterparts or nyai in the pesantren. Even in a broader society, the contributions of nyai in the transformation of pesantren are frequently eclipsed by the roles of their husbands or male counterparts. Therefore, this study aims to comprehend the roles of nyai and how they deal with cultural barriers that are essential for their public participation inside and outside the pesantren. Through an anthropological approach, this study presents the life narratives of two nyais in contemporary Indonesia and demonstrates the significant roles of nyai in the pesantren. It also aims to portray the life experiences of nyais in dealing with cultural barriers and promoting gender awareness to their students (santri). It also explores the interpretation of the gender equality concept within Islamic terms amid the prevailing patriarchal cultures and societies. In addition, it also examines the reception and practices of santri regarding gender awareness and equality. Thus, this study further argues that nyai plays an essential role in promoting gender equality in the pesantren. Nyai’s life experiences and leadership serve as an important modality for the pesantren to transform the society towards just and justice

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Transformative Islamic Education Management Model at Darul Hijrah Putri Martapura Islamic Boarding School, to answer the background of the problem which states the need for change to face the challenges of the times. This research also explains the supporting and inhibiting factors in its application, as well as the implications that occur. The study was conducted at Darul Hijrah Putri Islamic Boarding School, Batung Cindai Alus, Martapura, Banjar Regency. The researchers identified seven informants, including one dormitory leader, three teachers, one student, one parent, and one community leader. The collected data were then analyzed qualitatively using a phenomenological research approach to understand the meaning from the participants’ perspective. The analysis was interrelated and conducted in stages, including data presentation, reduction, verification, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study show that the transformative Islamic education management model at Darul Hijrah Putri Martapura Boarding School involves changes in the organizational structure by decentralizing decision-making and increasing communication and coordination among units. The model also includes expanding the competence of teachers through training and development so that teachers are more up-to-date and regularly conducted so that the duties of teachers can continue to develop in their professionalism, following the curriculum development by adopting changes in the national curriculum, namely integrating the curriculum so that students can focus on religion as well as general subjects to prepare students to face the era of time, and improving facilities to support the transformation of Islamic boarding schools by providing infrastructure such as computers and the Internet to support more modern learning and developing the leadership potential of students through various extracurricular activities. These changes increase the effectiveness of management and the quality of education provided to students. The implementation of this model is supported by several factors, such as an adaptive curriculum. However, there are also challenges such as the reluctance of some boarding school members to change, limited resources, lack of understanding of transformative management, limited competence, management complexity, and communication that is not well established. The transformative Islamic educational management model has positive implications for each educational stakeholder

    No full text
This study examines the curriculum of pesantren-based madrasahs as a support for the implementation of religious moderation, the traditions of santri (Islamic boarding school students) in practicing religious moderation, and the model of religious practices among santri in pesantren-based madrasahs. The research was conducted in Java, specifically in Madrasah al-Hidayat Lasem, Madrasah Qudsiyyah Kudus, MA KHAS Kempek Cirebon, Madrasah Aliyah Salafiyyah Syafi'iyyah Jombang, and Madrasah Hidayatul Mubtadi'in Lirboyo Kediri. The study used a qualitative method with a post-positivist phenomenological paradigm. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The findings indicate that the strengthening of madrasa curriculum is integrated with the values of religious moderation, such as the development of lesson plans and teaching materials that incorporate moderation values. In addition, traditional pesantren books are used as learning resources to inculcate moderate attitudes. Pesantren traditions, such as following the example of elders, preserving local traditions, maintaining a culture of writing, and fostering a scholarly environment, also support the implementation of religious moderation. The synergy between madrasas and interfaith institutions provides opportunities for santri to interact with non-Muslims, promoting patriotism, tolerance, open-mindedness, and anti-fanaticism.Based on these data, the study formulates a model of religious practices for santri that integrates the curriculum and pesantren traditions in promoting religious moderation. This model is expected to serve as a guideline for pesantren-based madrasahs in raising a generation of moderate santri who can contribute positively to national and societal life

The Impact of Government Sukuk Emissions on Islamic Banking Activities in Indonesia

    No full text
This paper aims to explore the crowding-out effect in the context of Islamic economics. Specifically, has the government's issuance of sukuk resulted in a decrease or even a negative impact on the financing growth of Islamic banks? In order to examine this effect, we use monthly data from all Islamic commercial banks in Indonesia from January 2008 to December 2023. This study employs autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) for data analysis. The results indicate that the growth in outstanding government sukuk is negatively and significantly related to the financing growth of Islamic banks, especially in the short term. In the long term, the growth in outstanding government sukuk tends not to have a significant effect on banking activities. Therefore, the growth of outstanding government sukuk has directly hampered Islamic economy and banking development

    No full text
This study examines the implementation of the Design, Explain, Develop, and Evaluation-Project-based Learning (DEDEn-PjBL) model in stimulating creativity among children aged 5-6 years in two kindergartens in Makassar City, using a mixed-methods approach. Employing an embedded concurrent design, 30 participants were involved in project-based learning activities using the DEDEn-PjBL model. This model encompasses the Design, Explanation, Development, and Evaluation phases to foster creativity. Data were collected through educator interviews, project observations, and quantitative assessments of children’s creative development using standardised rating scales from the Ministry of Education and Culture. The validity of the collected information was verified using source triangulation techniques. The findings indicate a significant increase in creativity in terms of fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. The children designed their projects using pre-prepared materials and tools, resulting in a 33.33% improvement to the “Developing as Expected” category and a 66.66% improvement to the “Developing Very Well” category. This study recommends incorporating the DEDEnPjBL model into the curriculum, as it significantly enhances creativity. However, the study is limited to two kindergartens, thus its findings cannot be widely generalised. Additionally, the short implementation period may not be sufficient to observe the long-term effects of the DEDEn-PjBL model

Bridging Inclusive Education in Multicultural Settings: A Data-Driven Approach to Analyzing Elementary Student Attitudes Toward Children with Special Needs

    No full text
This research aimed to investigate elementary school children's cognitive, emotional, and behavioural views towards their handicapped children, especially through students’ writing and reading skills. This research included 30 students aged 11–13 from a district. The research data were acquired with the Chedoke-McMaster Attitudes Towards Children with Handicaps (CATCH) scale for children. This research is distinguished by its innovative processing of qualitative data through a quantitative lens, employing topic modelling techniques with Python utilising LDA-malet within the frameworks of Google Colab and Excel applications. The quantitative data of this research is also interpreted with descriptive quantitative methods, so a quantitative research design with data triangulation is used in this study. Based on their interactions with these children and the presence of impaired persons in their surroundings, students' views towards children with disabilities were markedly disparate. Female pupils had greater proficiency in empathy skills toward their handicapped classmates. We identified a substantial and positive correlation between students' views towards children with disabilities and their cognitive and emotional empathy abilities. The "involvement and acceptance" and "avoidance" sub-dimensions of the attitude scale positively influence empathy abilities, whereas the 'pity' sub-dimension has a little negative impact on empathy skills. This research also concludes that inclusive education may become exclusive in the absence of narrative expanse for everyone. Respecting differences has the potential to cause polarization. Consequently, the awareness of each individual is essential. Writing and reading skills can serve as a conduit for teachers to reflect and for students to acquire knowledges and skills, among other benefits
