Gendered Lenses: Women in the News Photography of the 2019 Riau Forest Fires

    No full text
This study critically examines the visual representation of women in the news photography of the Riau Pos during the 2019 forest fires, addressing a gap in disaster media research on gendered imagery in Indonesia. Although environmental crises have received scholarly attention, the depiction of women in regional Indonesian newspapers remains underexplored. Using a qualitative methodology that combines visual semiotic analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis, the study explores how women are portrayed across four thematic roles: responders, victims, activists, and religious participants. Our findings demonstrate that while women are increasingly visible in disaster news, their portrayal is consistently shaped by traditional gender norms. Images that suggest female agency are frequently accompanied by captions or articles that reframe this visibility within roles of caregiving, motherhood, or moral virtue. Even in politicized or public contexts, women’s participation is legitimized only when aligned with culturally sanctioned femininity. As a result, their presence is symbolically acknowledged but not discursively empowered. By situating these localized visual practices within broader frameworks of representation and gender discourse, this study advances research in disaster communication, feminist media studies, and Indonesian journalism. It underscores the importance of analyzing how visual media not only reflects, but actively constructs socio-political boundaries of gendered participation in times of crisis, with implications for more equitable disaster risk communication

CONTESTING THE AUTHENTICITY OF ABU HURAIRAH’S MISOGYNISTIC HADITH: Bennett and Mernissi’s Critical Perspectives

    No full text
The critique of Prophet Muhammad’s originality, both historical and theological, has long been a central concern among Orientalist scholars challenging the authenticity of Islam. Clinton Bennett, a Christian theologian, presents himself as a Western academic adopting an independent stance in evaluating the rationale behind Muhammad’s teachings. While acknowledging the canonical status of Sahih al-Bukhari, Bennett questions the reliability of Abu Hurairah as a hadith transmitter, arguing that the honorific title Amir al-Muʾminin is inappropriate for a narrator of misogynistic traditions. His critique aligns with feminist scholar Fatima Mernissi’s gender-sensitive readings, particularly her concerns regarding the authenticity of certain historical narratives. A prominent example is Abu Hurairah’s narration of a woman condemned to hell for neglecting a female cat, an account interpreted as symptomatic of misogynistic tendencies within Islamic tradition. This study explores the authenticity of such a hadith and its implications for understanding misogyny in Islamic discourse through an inclusive and analytical lens. Employing a qualitative, descriptive-analytical method, it addresses the following question: How do Orientalist and feminist methodologies evaluate the authenticity of misogynistic hadiths in relation to Abu Hurairah’s credibility? The findings reveal that both Bennett and Mernissi assess Abu Hurairah’s reliability through a historical-critical framework, focusing on his age, proximity to the Prophet, and personal character. Their shared conclusion positions him as a junior companion whose close access to the Prophet arguably enabled a more consistent and guided transmission of hadiths.

PRESERVING THE TRADITION OF HADITH SANAD IJAZAH IN PESANTREN OF MANDAILING NATAL: Scholarly Continuity and Academic Challenges

    No full text
The sanad tradition serves as a fundamental mechanism for preserving the authenticity and continuity of hadith through a reliable and accountable chain of transmission. In Indonesia, particularly in Mandailing Natal, this tradition is actively maintained in Pesantren (pesantren), where the transmission of canonical hadith texts—such as Arba‘in an-Nawawi, Bulugh al-Maram, and Sahih al-Bukhari—relies on a sanad-based educational system. This study explores the mechanism of granting ijazah sanad (sanad certificates) in selected pesantren—notably Musthafawiyah, Darul Ulum, and Roihanul Jannah—and examines their contribution to sustaining hadith scholarship. Employing a qualitative methodology that includes fieldwork and historical analysis, the research reveals that sanad certification is not a mere formal acknowledgment, but the result of a rigorous academic and spiritual process. Teaching methods such as musyafahah, talaqqi, and sorogan are employed alongside recitations in class, mosques, and during Ramadan. Certificates are granted only to students who meet strict academic criteria, including completion of hadith study under a teacher with authenticated sanad lineage, comprehension of the matan, and observance of proper adab. Most sanad lineages trace back to scholars connected to Madrasah Ash-Shalatiyah and Darul Ulum Makkah, including Shaykh Muhammad Yasin al-Fadani. Despite its critical role, academic studies on hadith sanad remain limited compared to Qur’anic sanad research. This study underscores the need to revitalize scholarly attention to hadith sanad traditions and affirms the strategic role of pesantren as institutions preserving the integrity and transmission of classical Islamic knowledge.

    No full text
This study aims to validate a research‐skills assessment instrument for pre-service science teachers using Rasch modeling to evaluate reliability, item fit, and unidimensionality. The instrument was designed to measure the extent of research skills among undergraduate students in science education programs. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 114 participants recruited through quota sampling from several universities in Riau, Indonesia. Respondents completed a 40-item research-skills instrument. Data were analyzed with the Rasch model using Winsteps version 3.73. The results indicate satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.75), excellent item reliability (0.97), and acceptable person reliability (0.75). Rasch diagnostics further support the unidimensionality of the instrument, indicating that the items predominantly measure a single latent construct of research skills. These findings provide evidence for both the reliability and construct validity of the instrument within this population. Practically, the validated instrument can be used by higher education institutions to diagnose and monitor the research competencies of pre-service science teachers and to evaluate the effectiveness of research-oriented instructional interventions. By employing Rasch analysis, this study enhances the precision and defensibility of measurement in the context of research-skills assessment in Indonesia, offering a foundation for ongoing refinement and wider application in similar educational setting

Innovative anti-corruption education in the digital age requires integrating technology to effectively engage young people in understanding corruption’s dangers. This study explores the application of a Learning Management System (LMS) in anti-corruption education through a student-centered, team-based project learning approach. A qualitative case study was conducted at Universitas Bhinneka PGRI and STKIP PGRI Trenggalek, involving 55 students, two lecturers, and leaders of related universities. Data were gathered via interviews, documentation, and observations and analyzed interactively. The results indicated that LMS facilitated increased student engagement in anti-corruption learning, particularly through discussion forums and project-based activities. However, challenges such as technology access and student comfort with digital learning emerged. The study recommends expanding LMS usage in anti-corruption education, with additional support through technology training and improved accessibility. This approach can enhance the effectiveness, relevance, and sustainability of anti-corruption education, better equipping future generations to combat corruption

Competition and Stability in Indonesian Sharia Banking

    No full text
Discussions about the relationship between competition and stability often lead to two opposing views: competition-fragility and competition-stability, which suggest that competition can either weaken or enhance the stability of the banking system. This study examines the impact of competition and efficiency on the stability of Islamic banks in Indonesia during the period 2021 to 2023, focusing on the use of the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) and Boone Index as indicators of competition. Bank stability is measured using the Z-score, which reflects financial strength and the risk of bank insolvency.. This study uses HHI as a measure of market concentration and the Boone Index to assess efficiency in the Islamic banking industry. The analysis results indicate that HHI has a negative effect on the stability of Islamic banks, as measured by the Z-score, supporting the competition-fragility hypothesis. The study concludes that while higher market concentration reduces stability, improved efficiency enhances resilience, suggesting future research should broaden data scope and include external and alternative stability factors

New Atheist’s View on Theological: A Critical Analysis on Sam Harris’ Thought

    No full text
The New Atheism is emerging and becoming a global phenomenon, especially after 9/11, which was popularized by four well-known authors called the Four Horsemen. One of the new atheist figures, Sam Harris, wrote a book titled ‘The End of Faith Religion: Terror, and the Future of the Reason’ that contains critiques on religions, mainly Islam. Harris argues that Islam is dangerous because its Holy Book, the Qur’an, is thought to support jihad, which ultimately leads to acts of terrorism. Based on that, this study aims to critically analyze Sam Harris’s interpretation of theological sources of authority, specifically the Qur’an. This study using a qualitative research method and a hermeneutical approach. These data collection and analysis techniques allow more nuanced discussions on New Atheism as interpreted by Harris. This study argues that understanding religion requires philosophical, theological, and historical interpretation rather than solely a scientific or empirical lens. The findings of this study that Harris’ explanation about the Qur’an is superficial and misleading, primarily due to his limited understanding of Islam and the Qur’an itself. This study contributes to the development of Islamic science which can be studied in a multidisciplinary manner without ignoring the holy book as the main sourc

Religious Authority in the Digital Age: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Islamic Debates on Music in Indonesia

    No full text
The debate over non-religious music in Islam reflects an epistemological polarization in Indonesia's digital space, represented by Yufid TV and Bincang Syariah. Yufid TV based on a literal Salafi interpretation, rejecting music by referring to the Islamic doctrine of the hadith. This study aims to investigate how Islamic authority is negotiated through discourse on non-religious music across two prominent digital platforms, Yufid TV and Bincang Syariah.com. Methodologically, it employs Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to examine the textual, discursive, and socio-cultural dimensions of how both platforms construct, disseminate, and legitimize religious interpretation within the digital public sphere. The findings reveal that Yufid TV constructs a puritan discourse grounded in literalist interpretation, portraying music as a deviation from the purity of Islamic teachings. In contrast, Bincang Syariah adopts a contextual and maqaṣid-oriented approach, framing music as an ethical and cultural expression. Audience responses demonstrate a significant epistemological polarization, reflecting the broader transformation of religious authority from traditional institutions to digital spaces. Academically, this article contributes to contemporary Islamic studies by bridging discourse analysis and digital religion research, highlighting how online media functions as a new arena for ijtihad and the negotiation of religious legitimacy within modern Muslim societie

Pesantren serves not merely as an educational institution but as a living space demanding simultaneous social, emotional, and spiritual adaptation. This study explores the dynamics of homesickness experienced by students and the role of counseling services in reconstructing their emotional narratives at Al-Amanah Islamic Boarding School in Kudus. Employing a narrative ethnographic approach, the research captures students’ lived experiences of homesickness, their coping strategies, and how counselors facilitate the transformation of emotional meaning. Findings reveal that homesickness narratives evolve from burdensome emotions into sources of spiritual insight, shaped through the mediating interplay of pesantren traditions, religious symbols, and counseling dialogues. Counseling in the pesantren context functions not only as a therapeutic tool but also as a cultural practice that reshapes students’ understanding of distance, closeness, and independence. This study underscores the importance of narrative and culturally grounded counseling approaches in fostering students’ emotional adaptation holistically
