Negotiating Gender Roles: The Shift of Wives Role as the Main Breadwinners in Wijirejo Village, Indonesia
This study aims to analyze the transformation of wives’ economic roles as primary breadwinners in Muslim families in Wijirejo Village, Indonesia, and to examine its normative legitimacy through the perspectives of maṣlaḥah and Robert K. Merton’s structural-functionalism theory. The study addresses the tension between the normative construction of Islamic family law, which positions the husband as qawwām with primary financial responsibility, and the social reality in which wives increasingly assume the role of main breadwinners due to economic pressures and unstable husbands’ incomes. Employing a qualitative sociological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 12 wives who serve as primary breadwinners, participatory observation, and documentation, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The findings indicate that this role shift represents a form of structural and social adaptation grounded in the principle of maṣlaḥah. The wife’s role as the main breadwinner does not contradict the Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah as long as it generates benefits and prevents harm. Integrating maṣlaḥah with Merton’s functionalism reveals how Muslim families maintain social balance and religious values amid economic change. This study contributes to Islamic family law scholarship by offering an integrative socio-normative perspective on gender roles in contemporary Muslim society
Reinterpreting Husband's Obligations in the Tabligh Jama'ah Pontianak: Analytical Study of Article 80 Compilation of Islamic Law
The study aims to determine how the Jama’ah Tabligh Pontianak (Pontianak’s Tabligh/ da’wah congregation) interprets the obligations of husbands in Article 80 of the KHI (Compilation of Islamic Law) and how this interpretation may differ from the normative legal perspective. According to the Pontianak Tabligh congregation, as a husband, the obligation to provide religious education to his wife is more important than other obligations, even though the Marriage Law and the Compilation of Islamic Law do not state this. This is classified as normative research with a legal and theoretical approach. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews. Informants were determined through purposive sampling. The results of the study show that the Pontianak Tabligh congregation's interpretation of a husband's obligations emphasises the spiritual and cognitive dimensions of a husband's responsibilities. This perspective shows a shift in the meaning of obligations from material aspects to moral-transcendental aspects. The interpretation is based on the principle that every Muslim has an obligation to seek religious knowledge and the understanding that a wife is the first school for her children. The Pontianak Tabligh congregation establishes a hierarchy of the obligations for husbands, ranking the obligation to provide religious education first and permanently. Normatively, this view needs to be aligned with the principles of positive law to avoid biased interpretations of the law, because in responsive legal theory, a rule must be responsive to social dynamics. This study provides a new perspective on the obligations of husbands and offers input for religious institutions and the government on how to respond to the dynamics of legal understanding in society, especially in the field of Islamic marriage law. This study examines how the Jama’ah Tabligh Pontianak interprets a husband’s obligations under Article 80 of the Compilation of Islamic Law (KHI) and how this interpretation differs from the normative legal framework. The congregation prioritizes the obligation to provide religious education to one’s wife above other marital duties, even though such a hierarchy is not explicitly stipulated in the Marriage Law or the KHI. This research employs normative legal research with legal and theoretical approaches, supported by empirical data obtained through in-depth interviews with purposively selected informants. The findings indicate that the Pontianak Tabligh congregation emphasizes the spiritual and cognitive dimensions of a husband’s responsibilities, marking a shift from material obligations toward moral-transcendental ones. This interpretation is grounded in the belief that seeking religious knowledge is a fundamental duty for every Muslim and in the understanding of the wife as madrasatul ūlā (the first school) for children. Consequently, the congregation constructs a hierarchical model of marital obligations, positioning religious education as the primary and permanent duty of the husband. From a normative perspective, this interpretation requires alignment with principles of positive law to prevent biased or partial readings of legal norms. Within the framework of responsive legal theory, legal rules should engage with social dynamics without undermining legal certainty and justice. This study contributes a new socio-legal perspective on the interpretation of husbands’ obligations and offers insights for religious institutions and policymakers in responding

Marriage is Scary Among Indonesian Youth: Theological and Social Perspectives
The phenomenon of "Marriage is Scary" among Indonesian Muslim youth reflects the level of anxiety about the institution of marriage, despite its foundational status in Islamic theology as a sacred covenant (mithaq ghaliz) and act of worship. This study explores the theological underpinnings of these fears and examines how young Muslims reconcile divine principles with contemporary life challenges. Using a qualitative method, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 unmarried participants who reported anxiety or reluctance toward marriage. Thematic analysis revealed four primary factors: negative familial experiences, economic insecurity, fear of personal constraint, and exposure to negative narratives via social media. While participants acknowledged theological teachings—such as reliance on Allah (Q.S. At-Talaq: 2–3) and marriage as a Sunnah—many found these ideals difficult to apply in practice due to structural and emotional barriers. Rather than positioning Islamic theology as a prescriptive solution, the study highlights its potential as a reflective framework through which youth navigate moral ambivalence, spiritual doubt, and social transitions. The findings call for a renewed engagement with Islamic theology that addresses relational fears not only through doctrinal affirmation but through lived, contextual interpretation. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how Islamic theological discourse interacts with personal and societal anxieties, offering a more grounded approach to addressing fears of marriage among Muslim youth in Indonesia
Online Hate Among Adolescents: Patterns, Risks, and Interventions Through Digital Literacy, Family, and School Approaches A Systematic Review
This systematic review aims to identify patterns of online hate among adolescents, examine the associated risk factors, and evaluate the effectiveness of intervention strategies, particularly those based on digital literacy, family engagement, and school-based programs. The rise of online hate has become a serious concern for adolescent mental health and social development in the digital era. Following the PRISMA and PICO frameworks, a total of 247 studies were identified, of which 38 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed qualitatively. The reviewed studies, published between 2018 and 2025, indicate that adolescents are increasingly exposed to hate speech, cyberbullying, and discriminatory content, with vulnerable groups—such as women, immigrants, and individuals with prior experiences of violence—being at higher risk of victimization. Furthermore, low empathy and moral disengagement were consistently found to contribute to both the perpetration and victimization of online hate. The findings reveal that digital literacy training, family-based communication, and school-centered empathy education are among the most effective interventions. In conclusion, a multilevel preventive approach that integrates educational, familial, and community strategies is essential to mitigate the adverse effects of online hate and promote adolescent well-being

Islamic Politics on Forestry and Land Rehabilitation: A Case Study in Ulu Belu Tanggamus Lampung
Forest and Land Rehabilitation (FLR) is essential for maintaining ecological balance, particularly in Ulu Belu District, Tanggamus Regency, which faces a high risk of landslides. This study examines the strategies adopted by the Forestry Service in implementing forest and land rehabilitation efforts and the challenges encountered. A qualitative research approach was applied, using data collection methods such as observation, interviews, and documentation with relevant stakeholders, including the Forestry Service and the local community. Findings indicate that the Forestry Service has employed multiple strategies, including the Community Forestry Program (HKm), agroforestry practices, planting soil-stabilizing vegetation, and conducting public awareness campaigns on environmental conservation. However, these initiatives face significant hurdles, such as low public engagement, financial constraints, and the ongoing conversion of protected forests into farmland. Additionally, improper land management has further exacerbated landslide risks and environmental degradation. To improve the efficiency of rehabilitation programs, a more holistic approach is necessary. This includes offering incentives to farmers who implement conservation-oriented agricultural methods, strengthening institutional frameworks within social forestry programs, and promoting collaboration among the government, local communities, and private entities. By adopting more cohesive and sustainable strategies, forest and land rehabilitation in Ulu Belu District can effectively mitigate disaster risks and ensure long-term ecological stability for future generations

Effectiveness of Self-Management Techniques to Improve Learning Independence of Ibnu Katsir 1 Jember Students
Effectiveness of Self-Management Techniques to Improve Learning Independence of Ibnu Katsir 1 Jember Students. This study aims to test the effectiveness of self-management techniques in improving student learning independence at Ibnu Katsir 1 Islamic Boarding School in Jember. The background of this study is based on the low level of learning independence identified through initial observations, such as high dependence on teacher direction, lack of initiative in completing assignments, and lack of discipline in managing study time. This study used a quantitative quasi-experimental approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research subjects were 10 students selected based on their low learning independence scores. The data collection technique used a learning independence scale with a validity of ≥ 0.361 and a Cronbach's Alpha reliability of 0.874. Data analysis was carried out using a paired sample t-test with the help of SPSS 26. The results showed an increase in the average learning independence score from a pretest value of 57.3 to 75.6 in the posttest, with a significance value (p) of 0.000 < 0.05. This demonstrates the effectiveness of self-management techniques in enhancing student learning independence. These findings support Bandura's theory of self-reinforcement and social learning and extend its application to the context of Islamic boarding schools. The practical implication of these results is the importance of self-management-based guidance programs in supporting learning independence in Islamic educational environments. Suggestions for future research include expanding the sample size and extending the duration of the intervention to achieve more general and in-depth results. Keywords: Self-management, Learning Independence, Islamic Boarding School
