The Relevance of Edward L. Thorndike’s Ideas to Behaviorist Learning Theory and Implications for the Consistency of Islamic Education Instruction at MI Al Azhar Center Baturaja
This study explores the relevance of Edward L. Thorndike’s ideas to behaviorist learning theory and implications for the consistency of Islamic Education instruction at MI Al Azhar Center Baturaja. Behaviorist theory emphasizes observable behavior formed through stimulus-response interactions and reinforced by repetition and consequences. Thorndike’s principles Law of Readiness, Law of Exercise, Law of Effect, and Law of Attitude provide a systematic framework for shaping and sustaining learning behavior. A descriptive quantitative approach was employed, involving all PAI teachers as respondents, with data collected via a validated and highly reliable Likert-scale questionnaire. Frequency distribution analysis revealed that teachers actively apply these principles by preparing students mentally, conducting repeated exercises, giving positive feedback, emphasizing consequences, and utilizing prior experiences to strengthen positive religious behavior. The findings demonstrate that Thorndike’s behaviorist framework is highly relevant and practically applied, fostering disciplined, consistent, and sustainable learning patterns. The study concludes that applying Thorndike’s principles not only develops students’ skills but also strengthens religious character, offering a structured and evidence-based approach for educators to promote consistent and meaningful engagement in PAI activities. These results contribute to both theoretical understanding and practical implementation of behaviorist learning in contemporary Islamic educatio
Managing Quality for Muslim Middle-Class Expectations: A Tqm-Informed Study of a Leading Islamic School in Indonesia
The development of leading Islamic schools in Indonesia cannot be separated from the growth of the large Muslim middle class, particularly in urban areas. The increasing economic capacity of the Muslim middle class, coupled with strong religious awareness, has led to numerous demands and expectations in the field of education. Therefore, in relation to the current trend, this study aims to determine the expectations of the Muslim middle class regarding the quality management of leading Islamic schools, as well as how their curricula and services are administered. The expectation of school quality is realized through Total Quality Management (TQM), a management system that involves all human resources within the school environment to enhance both the quality of education and the outcome of graduates. The research was conducted in the Islamic Junior High School (SMP) of Muhammadiyah Ahmad Dahlan, a leading Islamic school in Metro City that implements four effective, internationally standardized curricula. This research employed a qualitative approach with a narrative inquiry method. Data were collected using interviews, observation, and documentation. The primary data sources included the principal, vice-principal, teachers, and students. Secondary data sources included guardians or parents of students, as well as educational stakeholders. The collected data were then analyzed using an inductive approach. Based on the research process and data analysis, the findings of this study indicate that: (1) The Muslim middle class has high expectations for Islamic educational institutions in integrated quality management, particularly in improving religious learning, providing high and competitive academic quality, and developing students’ Islamic character and morals. (2) Quality educational institutions also require up-to-date facilities and infrastructure, competent and professional teachers, a comfortable school environment, and stakeholder involvement. (3) In pursuit of its objectives, the school implements integrated quality management through the application of an internationally standardized curriculum based on Islamic values, sustainable human resource management, a transparent and accountable financial system, and the provision of representative learning facilities and infrastructure
Product Development in Islamic Financial Institutions (IFIS): An Extensive Literature Review
This paper aims to critically review existing studies related to IFIs products and their instruments, IFIs’ product development, and the agenda for IFIs’ product development in the future. This study is built upon an extensive literature review of the existing literature on IFIs, revisiting its objectives, its criticism, and looking at the Product Development Process of IFIs from previous studies. Considering IFIs product development, so far the process on IFIs lies on the need to be competitive thus imitating their conventional counterparts. However on the other side, there’s a need for developing the instruments without denying the fulfilment of Islamic law (maqasid al sharia) within the process. On the other hand, there are some arguments on to what extent Sharia principles or maqasid al sharia is being fulfilled as so far, the feasible indicators are still limited. As product development in IFIs is complex and demands innovations in many aspects, collaboration among global and Islamic Economy actors is needed. This paper implies that there’s a need for a comprehensive approach in formulating an ideal product development process for IFIs and giving urges to global Islamic Economy actors to collaborate
Islamic Microfinance and Digital Literacy Driving MSME Growth: Innovation as Mediator and Competition as Moderator in Shariah Economic Context
This study investigates the impact of Islamic microfinance and digital literacy on the growth of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia, grounded in the principles of maqāṣid al-sharīʿah. Using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) on a sample of 100 MSMEs, the study examines both direct and indirect effects through business innovation, with market competition as a moderating variable. The findings reveal that Islamic microfinance and digital literacy significantly promote MSME growth, while business innovation is a key mediating mechanism. Interestingly, the moderating effect of market competition on innovation is negative, suggesting that excessive rivalry may inhibit innovation outcomes. This result is interpreted through both Islamic principles, such as maslahah, musābaqah, and ijtihād, and conventional theories of competition and innovation. The integration of ethical constructs like akhlāq al-raqāmiyyah and sharia-compliant financing (e.g., muḍārabah, mushārakah) demonstrates how spiritual and strategic dimensions interact in entrepreneurial growth. The study contributes to Islamic entrepreneurship theory by formalizing ethical digital literacy and Islamic competition as empirical constructs. It offers practical insights for Islamic financial institutions and policymakers while supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 8 on inclusive economic growth

AbstractReading and writing are positive things and have many benefits for self-development. However, this activity often results in boredom. This can occur due to the lack of awareness and ability of educational institutions to stimulate literacy sensitivity. So this phenomenon has an impact on the decline in students' interest in reading and writing. A similar thing also happens in the Islamic boarding school environment. The literacy habits of students in Islamic boarding schools have decreased drastically due to various problems. So it is a challenge in itself for the library as one of the educational institutions in Islamic boarding schools to restore the essence of santri literacy. This research was realized with the aim of strengthening students' literacy interests and talents through various programs designed by the Annuqayah Lubtara Putri Islamic Boarding School library, especially the mandatory reading, review and short discussion program (BASENSI). With this implementation, it is hoped that the students' sensitivity and potential to enter the field of literacy will remain honed. Based on descriptive phenomenological studies as well as observations and interviews with research sources, researchers discovered a new idea that it is very important to pair reading activities with writing and discussion practices. Not only that, another important thing that is needed is the development of educational integrity and program upgrades by libraries. As this Islamic boarding school library work program has succeeded in building a strong literacy environment, so that the students' talents and interests can be developed optimally thanks to the Basensi program. Keywords: Islamic boarding school library; Talents and Interests; Santri; Basensi Program AbstrakMembaca dan menulis merupakan hal positif dan kaya manfaat terhadap pengembangan diri. Banjar Sufism: The Relationship between Fiqh and Sufism in the Works of Sheikh Muhammad Arsyad Al-Banjari
This study aims to examine in greater depth the relationship between Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and Sufism (taṣawwuf) in the thought of Syekh Muhammad Arsyad al-Banjari, with two main objectives. First, it explores how he responded to the dynamics of the fiqh–taṣawwuf relationship in his time, particularly within the context of tensions between legalistic and spiritual approaches. Second, it analyzes how the ontological and epistemological relationship between fiqh and taṣawwuf is constructed within his intellectual framework. Utilizing a qualitative, text-based method with analytical and hermeneutical approaches, the research focuses on two of his key works: Kanz al-Maʿrifah and Fatḥ al-Raḥmān. The findings reveal, first, that Syekh Arsyad responded to the prevailing tension between jurisprudential formalism and mystical excesses by formulating a balanced position that affirms the necessity of both dimensions in Islamic practice. He positioned fiqh as a necessary structure for regulating external behavior, while emphasizing taṣawwuf as a means for spiritual refinement grounded in that structure. Second, the study shows that Syekh Arsyad envisioned an integrated religious life based on an ontological unity between fiqh and taṣawwuf, while maintaining their epistemological distinction. For him, fiqh and taṣawwuf must not be conflated, yet cannot be separated. Taṣawwuf provides the inner spirit and depth of Islamic practice, while fiqh offers the normative framework that safeguards taṣawwuf from deviation. This model reflects a coherent synthesis in which both disciplines complement and complete each other, contributing to a holistic and balanced vision of Islamic piety rooted in the local epistemology of the Malay-Indonesian Muslim world
ESD-STEM solid waste management project to enhance students’ sustainability action in learning environmental pollution
Poor solid waste management can lead to significant environmental pollution, and the younger generation needs to be involved in finding solutions. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of involving students in ESD-STEM learning through solid waste management projects on improving engineering design skills and sustainability actions. A quasi-experimental design with a non-probability sampling method, especially convenience sampling, was used. There were two classes, one experimental and one control, each with 35 students. The instruments used included a validated and reliable sustainability action questionnaire. The questionnaire to measure changes in student actions was adapted from the Environmental Citizenship Questionnaire (ECQ) and ESD learning goals. The results showed a significant difference in the sustainability actions of students in the experimental and control classes after the learning process but with an increase in student action in the experimental class which was still low with an average N-gain score of 0.25. This shows that student involvement through the ESD-STEM solid waste management project has a significant influence on student sustainability actions, although the increase is still relatively low. These results prove that ESD-STEM learning is able to enhance students’ sustainability action on environmental issues, but more optimal habituation and assistance are needed for more sustainable impact
The Implementation of CFL Learning Model Integrated with Ethnoscience to Enhance Students’ Critical Thinking Skills
This research aims to implement an integrated Collaborative Flipped Learning (CFL) model with ethno science to improve students' critical thinking skills. The background of this research is the low critical thinking skills of Indonesian students, particularly in science learning, necessitating more contextual and meaningful learning innovations. The CFL model combines flipped learning, which promotes independent learning, with collaborative learning, which emphasizes group interaction, while ethno science connects scientific concepts with local wisdom. The research method uses a quasi-experimental design. The research subjects are 15 students from three universities. Data was collected thru the Ennis indicator-based critical thinking test, response questionnaires, learning implementation observations, and documentation. The analysis was conducted descriptively, supplemented by N-Gain calculations, normality tests, homogeneity tests, and ANOVA. The research results indicate that learning with the ethno science-based CFL model significantly improved critical thinking skills. This model has proven effective as an innovative 21st-century learning strategy relevant to the local cultural context
Redefining Justice: How Mismanaged Village Funds Threaten Community Well-Being
This study examines the influence of opportunistic behavior driven by the love of money on village fund management and its impact on the prosperity of village communities, particularly in the distribution of Direct Cash Assistance (BLT). Misuse of funds, such as data manipulation and fund reduction, undermines the effectiveness of aid and promotes social injustice. Using a mixed method (quantitative and qualitative) and path analysis with SmartPLS, 104 samples were collected from villages in two sub-districts of Lamongan Regency. The findings reveal that opportunistic behavior and love of money significantly affect village fund management and community prosperity. Furthermore, village fund management significantly mediates the relationship between these variables and community prosperity. These results highlight the importance of strengthening supervision, transparency, and accountability in managing village funds. Effective collaboration between the government, communities, and oversight institutions is essential to prevent fund misuse and ensure that village funds are used fairly and efficiently to sustainably improve community welfare
The Impact of Auditors' Professional Judgment and the Whistleblowing System on the Disclosure of Financial Management Fraud in Local Government: Evidence from BPK Representatives in Central Java, Indonesia.
This study examines the increasing incidence of corruption in Indonesia, with a focus on the roles of auditors' professional judgment and the whistleblowing system in detecting financial management fraud within local governments. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 38 auditors of the Central Java Audit Board (BPK) through purposive sampling and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics. The results demonstrate that both professional judgment and the whistleblowing system have significant positive effects on fraud disclosure. These findings underscore the crucial need to enhance oversight mechanisms and advocate for additional research on factors that influence fraud disclosure, particularly in light of the decline in the Anti-Corruption Behavior Index (IPAK) in 2024. The study contributes to enhancing the understanding of fraud detection processes in public sector auditing and provides actionable insights for policymakers and auditing institutions to improve transparency and accountability
